To find Reddit threads from a web search engine, start with site:reddit.com and a specific topic or phrase. Use Reddit’s own search afterward when you need to narrow results by community, title, author, or date—or when external results are missing or out of date.
Search the web for Reddit threads
In Google or another general search engine, try site:reddit.com [topic]. Make the query more specific with a distinctive phrase from the question, a product or place name, or likely subreddit wording. For example, if you want advice about a raised garden bed, try site:reddit.com "raised bed" gardening. For a thread that may contain a solution or recommendation, add a term such as solved or recommendations.
You can also try a title-focused search such as site:reddit.com intitle:"distinctive phrase". Search syntax differs across engines, so this may work differently depending on where you search. Reddit’s community-authored guide also recommends using Google’s site:reddit.com search to find Reddit contributions: Reddit search guide.
External search is a convenient way to find naturally worded questions across the public web, but it is a discovery shortcut, not a complete index. A result may be missing, old, or no longer representative. Open promising threads and check their dates; if the results are too broad or incomplete, repeat the search on Reddit.
Find relevant communities on Reddit
Search for the subject—or a synonym—and select the Communities result type to see candidate subreddits. Reddit search offers distinct result types for communities, posts, comments, media, and people, so choose the one that matches what you are looking for. You can also restrict a search to a particular community, then switch back to results from all of Reddit if needed. See Reddit’s search help.
If you cannot work out the right community name or terminology, describe your interest in r/FindAReddit and ask for suggestions.

Discover Tab: check your current app
Reddit announced a Discover Tab in 2022 as a personalized way to explore content and communities, with topic filters and feedback controls. The announcement reported that one in five people joined at least one new community after using the feature during its initial testing. That is a company-reported result from that test, not a general conversion rate or a current estimate. Because the announcement is from 2022, check your app’s current navigation rather than assuming the tab is still available in the same place: Reddit’s Discover Tab announcement.
Narrow a Reddit search to a post or discussion
Start with a distinctive phrase from the question, then add a field filter to focus the results. Reddit documents filters including author, flair, self, selftext, site, subreddit, title, and url. Put the filter name directly next to its value; use quotation marks around a multiword value. Examples:

Reddit also supports the case-sensitive Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT, along with parentheses for grouping. For example, battery AND replacement NOT laptop excludes results about laptops, while (seedling OR transplant) AND frost searches for either term alongside frost. See Reddit’s documented search syntax.
When you start a search from inside a subreddit, Reddit uses that community as the search scope. If the results seem too limited, switch the scope back to all Reddit. You can search comments on a post in Reddit’s desktop site and native apps as well, which is useful when you remember a particular recommendation or passage but not the post title.

After searching, use the sort and time controls to match the kind of answer you need. Reddit documents these sort options and time ranges in its search help:
| Option | Best suited to |
|---|---|
| Relevance | Matching a specific query; Reddit says it factors in term rarity, post age, votes, and comments. |
| Hot | Finding posts with recent activity. |
| Top | Finding posts with high all-time votes and comments; you can also limit the time period. |
| New | Finding the newest posts. |
| Comment Count | Finding posts with many comments and substantial discussion. |
Available time filters include all time, the past year, month, week, 24 hours, and hour. For a changing subject, such as a current product issue, select New and a short time range, then check the dates and verify important claims. For an evergreen how-to, Relevance can help surface a close match, while Top can reveal well-known older discussions.

Which search route should you use?
| Route | Useful for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
General search engine with site:reddit.com |
Broad phrase matching and finding naturally worded questions. | Results may omit Reddit pages or show stale content; it does not provide Reddit’s purpose-built filters and sorts. |
| Reddit search | Choosing result types, searching within a community, applying field filters, and sorting by activity or time. | It searches Reddit rather than the wider web, and a query may still need refinement with specific terms or filters. |
Neither route should be treated as proof that every matching Reddit post or comment has been indexed. Use web search to discover likely threads, then use Reddit’s controls when you need more precise filtering or a better sense of freshness.
