If updates should stay enabled but you want to avoid restarts during your usual working hours, set Active hours. If an update is already waiting for a restart, use Schedule the restart. These are separate controls for different situations.
Choose the control that matches what you need
| Control | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Pause updates | Temporarily delays update downloads and installations. | You need updates to wait for a while. |
| Active hours | Helps prevent automatic restarts during the hours you normally use the device; it does not stop updates downloading or installing. | You want updating to remain enabled but want fewer interruptions during your usual schedule. |
| Schedule the restart | Sets a more convenient time for a restart Windows requires to finish an update. | An update is ready and Windows is asking for a restart. |
How to pause updates in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Under Pause updates, select Pick a date.
- Choose an end date. Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions limit the selection to up to 35 days from the current date. Microsoft’s Pause updates instructions explain the date control and its effects.
Pausing is temporary, not a permanent way to turn off automatic updates. Microsoft states, “This doesn’t permanently turn off automatic updates.” When the pause expires, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs the latest available updates. If an update is in progress when you pause, it is canceled; updates that may require a restart are not downloaded or installed until the pause ends.
If updates are already paused, you can choose a different end date, but it must still fall within 35 days of the current date. After the pause limit is reached, Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says you need to install the latest updates before pausing again: Windows Update: FAQ.
Keep updates on but manage restart timing
Set Active hours in Windows 11
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Choose automatic adjustment or set the hours manually.
Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the device, helping it avoid an inconvenient automatic restart. They are not a pause: updates can still download and install. See Microsoft’s Active hours guidance.

Schedule a pending restart in Windows
When Windows says an update needs a restart, open Settings > Windows Update and look for Schedule the restart. Select it and choose a time that works for you. Microsoft notes that Windows may prompt you to schedule a more convenient restart; this changes when the restart occurs, not whether the update is installed. See the Windows Update FAQ.
Windows 10: different settings, and support has ended

In an article published August 14, 2026, Microsoft described a gradual change for eligible Windows 11 devices running versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. For eligible devices, some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates released on or after July 28, 2026, are held to install with the monthly security update so they can share one restart. Microsoft says Defender security intelligence updates, AI component updates, critical or expedited driver updates, and emergency or out-of-band updates can still install as soon as available. The change is rolling out gradually, so it is not a guarantee that every PC will behave this way. Details: One restart a month for Windows updates.
