Android 8.1 can show a speed label beside some nearby public Wi-Fi networks before you connect. The labels—Slow, OK, Fast, and Very Fast—are estimates to help you judge what a network may handle, not measured Mbps or a guaranteed speed test.
Where to find the Wi-Fi speed labels
On a supported Android 8.1 device, turn on Wi-Fi and open Settings > Network & internet > Internet. A qualifying public network may show its speed beneath its name in the Wi-Fi list. Google notes that “Speed can change with signal strength.”
The feature was introduced with Android 8.1 Oreo in 2018. At the time, Google devices named as supported included Pixel, Pixel 2, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X. That is historical rollout information, not a guarantee that every device or later software version displays the labels.

Google describes the labels in terms of likely activities, rather than publishing Mbps cutoffs:

- 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- 𝐖𝐢𝐅𝐢 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 - Experience wired speed and reliability anywhere in your home by connecting your favorite device to the fast ethernet port.
| Label | Activities Google associates with it |
|---|---|
| Slow | Email and texts should work; images may load slowly. |
| OK | Reading webpages, using social media, streaming music, and watching standard-definition video. |
| Fast | Streaming most high-definition video and making video calls. |
| Very Fast | Streaming very high-quality video. |
These descriptions are practical guidance, not a promise that every app or video will perform as expected. The label can change as signal strength changes, and real performance also depends on the network and what else is using it.
Why a network may not show a label
- It is password-protected. The feature was designed for public/open networks; protected networks do not show the estimate.
- The network administrator opted out. Administrators can choose not to display a speed estimate for their network.
- Your device or software may not support it. The 2018 rollout named selected Google devices running Android 8.1; it does not establish support for every Android phone.
How reliable is the estimate?
Think of the label as a quick pre-connection clue, not a speed-test result. It does not provide a numeric download or upload rate, and the original rollout report cautioned that it was not exactly a speed test rating. A “Fast” network can still feel slow if the signal weakens or the connection is congested; a label cannot guarantee the quality of a particular call or stream.
