To use it, add the connector from Anypoint Exchange, configure AWS IAM authentication, and place a Lambda operation in a flow. The Anypoint Exchange listing for version 1.2.3 specifies a minimum Mule runtime of 4.2.1 and Java 8, 11, or 17; check the release notes for the exact connector release and runtime combination before building or deploying.
What the Amazon Lambda Connector does
MuleSoft’s Amazon Lambda Connector is an Anypoint Connector for executing AWS Lambda operations from Mule flows. It is published in Anypoint Exchange as Amazon Lambda Connector – Mule 4 in the 1.2.x version family. The Exchange listing identifies version 1.2.3, a minimum Mule runtime of 4.2.1, and compatibility with Java 8, Java 11, and Java 17: Anypoint Exchange listing.
The connector is useful when a Mule integration needs to invoke a Lambda function or retrieve Lambda function information without implementing those calls as custom flow logic. Official documentation does not provide benchmark comparisons against AWS SDK or direct HTTP implementations, so performance or cost advantages should not be assumed.
Requirements and compatibility
- Mule runtime: The documented 1.2.x baseline is Mule 4.2.1 or later. Version 1.2.3’s Exchange metadata lists Mule 4.2.1 as its minimum runtime; verify the specific release notes for the Mule 4 minor version you plan to run.
- Java: The Exchange listing for version 1.2.3 specifies Java 8, 11, and 17 compatibility. Confirm the metadata for the exact connector version selected.
- Anypoint Studio: The setup guide specifies Studio 7.3 or later.
- AWS access: You need AWS IAM access-key credentials and permission to access the target Lambda resource.
- Working knowledge: MuleSoft recommends familiarity with the AWS Lambda API, Anypoint Connectors, Mule runtime and flow elements, and Anypoint Studio.
See MuleSoft’s Amazon Lambda Connector release notes to check runtime requirements by release.

Operations available
The connector reference documents four operations:
| Operation | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Invoke | Invokes a Lambda function synchronously. |
| Invoke Async | Invokes a function asynchronously through the AWS Lambda invoke-async endpoint. |
| List Functions | Lists Lambda functions available to the configured AWS identity. |
| Get Function | Retrieves information about a specified Lambda function. |
For the full parameter reference, see MuleSoft’s Amazon Lambda Connector reference.
Configure the connector in Anypoint Studio
- Check the versions. Confirm the project’s Mule runtime and Java versions are supported by the connector release, using the Exchange listing and release notes.
- Create a Mule project and add the dependency. In Anypoint Studio, create or open a Mule project, then add Amazon Lambda Connector from Anypoint Exchange.
- Add a flow source. Start the flow with an appropriate source, such as an HTTP Listener or Scheduler.
- Place a Lambda operation in the flow. Choose Invoke, Invoke Async, List Functions, or Get Function, depending on the task.
- Set up a reusable global configuration. In the operation’s configuration, create or select the Amazon Lambda global element and configure AWS authentication with the IAM credentials that can access the target resource. MuleSoft recommends using property placeholders for authorization values rather than embedding secrets directly in the project.
- Configure the operation and test. Provide the required function name or ARN where applicable, map the request body if invoking a function, and test the connection. Run the flow and check the application log if configuration or invocation errors occur.
The Studio walkthrough is available in MuleSoft’s Amazon Lambda Connector Studio guide.

Function names, request bodies, and timeouts
Function name formats
The Function Name input accepts a simple name, a full ARN, or a partial ARN. For example, my-function is a simple name; arn:aws:lambda:us-west-2:123456789012:function:my-function is a full ARN; and 123456789012:function:my-function is a partial ARN. Use the name or ARN form appropriate to the function and AWS account being targeted.
Request body
For invocation operations, the request body defaults to the current Mule payload when no other body is supplied. If the Lambda function expects a particular JSON structure or other input shape, ensure the payload is mapped and formatted accordingly before the operation.

Configuration timeouts
The global configuration includes a response timeout and timeout unit. The documented units range from nanoseconds, microseconds, milliseconds, seconds, minutes, to days. The configuration reference also includes an expiration policy that controls when an idle dynamic configuration can expire. Choose a response timeout suitable for the integration, and account for the Lambda function’s expected duration rather than treating the connector timeout as a substitute for the function’s own limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common setup issues
- Unsupported runtime or Java version: Compare your project settings with the metadata and release notes for the exact connector version, not just the general 1.2.x baseline.
- Authentication or access failures: Check that the configured IAM credentials are valid and authorized for the requested Lambda operation and resource.
- Function not found: Verify the function name or ARN, including its AWS region and account where specified, and make sure the credentials have access to it.
- Unexpected function input: Inspect the Mule payload and operation body mapping; the payload is used by default if another request body is not configured.
- Timeouts or connection problems: Review the global response timeout and any configured retry or reconnection behavior against the integration’s requirements. Use the application log and Studio connection test to narrow down configuration errors.
Connector configuration fields and operation inputs are documented in the reference guide; setup and connection testing are covered in the Studio guide.
