The OBSBOT Tail 2 has two distinct control surfaces: a network API using HTTP and WebSocket, and USB modes for file transfer or UVC webcam use. On Linux, a reported UVC driver defect can make pan, tilt, and zoom reads look stale even though the camera can return live values. A proposed device-specific fix addresses that readback behavior, but the September 2026 kernel discussion confirms only a partial merge into a development tree—not that the complete fix is in a released kernel.

How the Tail 2 can be controlled

The network and USB routes are separate interfaces, not two names for the same protocol. Network control uses HTTP REST requests and a WebSocket status feed. USB-C can instead be configured for MTP file transfer or UVC webcam operation; in UVC mode, the camera exposes standard UVC controls as well as a vendor Extension Unit.

Route Transport and interface What the cited material reports Important limitation
Network HTTP REST plus WebSocket Control categories include zoom, gimbal, presets, streaming output, recording, focus, and tracking. The /ws/ WebSocket pushes a status block at roughly one-second intervals. The documented status block does not include live yaw, pitch, or roll, so it should not be treated as continuous absolute gimbal-position feedback.
USB in MTP mode USB-C file-transfer mode Reported for offloading footage. This is not the UVC webcam control interface.
USB in UVC mode USB-C webcam mode; standard UVC controls and a vendor Extension Unit Linux patch discussion identifies the Tail 2 as USB ID 3564:fefc. On affected Linux driver behavior, reads of certain controls can return a cached host-written value rather than the camera’s current value.

The detailed protocol account is third-party reverse engineering, not a vendor API guarantee. Its author says the observations were exercised on one Tail 2 running firmware 7.2.13.1 on 2026-09-26. The report labels exercised behavior “MEASURED” and details derived from the camera’s bundled web application “INFERRED.” Those labels matter: inferred endpoints or behaviors should not be assumed to work on every unit or firmware without verification.

Why Linux can show stale pan, tilt, or zoom values

The issue described in the Linux media mailing-list patches is a mismatch between what the camera can report and what the UVC driver believes it should request. According to patch author Michael Jordan, the Tail 2’s GET_INFO response omits the AUTOUPDATE indication for absolute pan/tilt, relative pan/tilt, and absolute zoom controls. Without that indication, the driver may serve its last host-written value instead of asking the camera for its current value.

Jordan reports that the camera does return live values through GET_CUR, including while the camera is moving under commands or subject tracking. The camera reportedly does not send control-change events on its interrupt endpoint. The practical result is that a control read in Linux can lag behind the physical camera, even though the device has current data available.

What the proposed fix changes

The device-specific patch adds UVC_CTRL_FLAG_AUTO_UPDATE for the affected controls when the USB ID is 3564:fefc. The patch also includes the relevant SET_CUR, GET_RANGE, and restore flags. The broader patch series marks auto-update controls volatile and changes how control-fixup flags are applied, so the driver treats these values as needing fresh readback rather than blindly relying on its prior host-side value.

This is a readback fix, not evidence that the camera’s motion, tracking, or network API is being changed. It concerns how the Linux UVC driver interprets and reads particular controls for the identified device.

Has the Tail 2 UVC fix shipped in Linux?

Not on the evidence of the cited kernel exchange alone. In a reply dated 2026-09-29, Linux media maintainer Hans de Goede said patches 2–4 had entered the for-next development tree, while patch 1 was awaiting a new version and further review. That is partial development-tree merge status at that date; it does not establish that the full series is present in any released kernel or in a particular distribution kernel.

How to assess a Linux system

  • Confirm that the camera is enumerating as USB ID 3564:fefc; the fix described is device-specific.
  • Check the exact kernel build and its source or distribution changelog for the relevant UVC control-flag changes. A mailing-list status message does not show what your installed kernel contains.
  • Compare a pan, tilt, or zoom read while the camera is stationary with a read during commanded movement or tracking. On an affected driver, the read may remain at the last host-written value; a kernel with the applicable changes should request current values as intended.
  • If the control values still appear stale, do not infer that the camera cannot report position: verify the running kernel’s patch state and the camera’s USB mode and identity first.

What to use for network control versus USB

Choose based on the job and the feedback the software needs. The documented network interface provides HTTP commands and periodic WebSocket status, with the stated status-block limitation on absolute gimbal angles. USB UVC fits webcam workflows and exposes standard controls, but Linux readback for selected motion and zoom controls depends on the driver behavior described above. The sources do not establish that either route is categorically better for all production or automation setups.

For exact network requests, consult current OBSBOT protocol resources rather than copying an endpoint inferred from a particular web bundle. OBSBOT’s support materials list VISCA over IP, VISCA over UART, Pelco, and OSC resources in addition to protocol documentation, so the appropriate documented interface may depend on the intended controller and workflow.
