Do not try to extinguish an active lithium-ion battery fire. Evacuate, warn anyone nearby, call 911, and stay well away from smoke while you wait for firefighters. A battery that looks as though it has gone out can reignite. These are the U.S. Fire Administration’s battery-specific instructions for the public, not a do-it-yourself suppression procedure: USFA lithium-ion battery safety guidance.
What should you do if a lithium-ion battery catches fire?
- Leave the area. Get yourself and others away from the battery and out of danger.
- Warn people nearby as you evacuate, if you can do so without approaching the battery or delaying your escape.
- Call 911 and report a lithium-ion battery fire. Give the location and tell responders what device or system is involved if you know.
- Stay away from smoke and wait for trained responders. Follow their directions; do not return to inspect or move the battery.
USFA’s advice for the public is not to try to put out a lithium-ion battery fire. Smoke and heat are hazards, and a battery incident can involve flammable gases, cells ejected from a pack, and additional ignitions. Keep your distance rather than trying to identify the battery chemistry or manage the fire yourself. USFA’s overview of lithium-ion battery risks and response describes these hazards.
What if the battery is hot or damaged but not burning?
Stop using a battery or device that is damaged, unusually hot, bulging, popping or hissing, or visibly venting gas. Move away and keep others clear; do not handle a suspect battery as if it were an ordinary device problem. Contact emergency services if there is smoke, venting, a rapid rise in temperature, or any immediate fire danger. USFA identifies these as possible signs of battery damage or thermal runaway, an uncontrolled chain reaction of heating that can lead to fire or explosion. See its public lithium-ion battery safety guidance and risk and response overview.
Should you use a fire extinguisher?
Do not treat a household extinguisher as a solution for an actively burning lithium-ion battery. USFA’s general fire-extinguisher checklist says an extinguisher is an option only for a small, contained fire when the user is safe from toxic smoke, has a clear escape route, and someone has called the fire department; if any condition is uncertain, leave and call 911. That general advice does not override USFA’s battery-specific instruction to the public not to try to put out a battery fire. USFA’s general extinguisher guidance.

#1 Best Overall
- Risk reduction: Fireproof doesn't mean it can be endlessly exposed to fire and resist spontaneous battery combustion, we designed this product originally to reduce the risk of fire and stop the spread of fire, it is recommended that our products are stored in an open area with no flammable materials around to ensure maximum safety.
- Fire prevention: Coated special fabric | For covering or wrapping batteries or battery-powered devices | Retains heat, flames and smoke | Caution in case of fire - gases are toxic.
- Protection: The fireproof cover delays the spread of heat and fire in the event of a fire | It immediately reduces smoke development | Battery fires are limited and conventional fires are smothered by oxygen deprivation.
- Compact and light: The fireproof blanket is easy to handle and can be stored easily. This makes it ideal for use at home, in the office or when travelling to enable a quick response to potential fire hazards.
- Do you know the potential dangers of lipo batteries? Once the battery is shorted, it will instantly generate high temperature and spontaneously ignite, which brings danger to you and your family. We designed this cover to minimize that risk, even though it can't withstand the heat and flames naturally generated by batteries for long time. But it will at least give you time to react to a spontaneous battery combustion.
Why there is no single do-it-yourself method
“Lithium-ion battery fire” can mean a phone or other portable device, an e-bike or scooter, an electric vehicle, or a stationary energy-storage system. These differ in size, design, battery location, chemistry, and incident conditions. Tactics for large systems are responder-led and situation-specific, not a universal household procedure.
In its July 29, 2025 account of guidance developed with NHTSA, USFA notes that there is no universally accepted, scientifically validated method for extinguishing every kind of electric-vehicle fire. It also describes limited science-based guidance and variation among vehicle batteries. For an EV, USFA points responders to the vehicle maker’s Emergency Response Guide; that is not a consumer suppression instruction. USFA’s EV incident response overview.

Can a lithium-ion battery reignite after it goes out?
Yes. Apparent extinguishment does not establish that the battery is safe: reignition can occur. Leave post-fire assessment and monitoring to responders, follow their instructions, and do not move, inspect, or dispose of a fire-involved battery yourself. USFA directs firefighters to conduct thorough post-fire assessments and continued monitoring, including during transport and placement. Notify a flight crew member immediately if a lithium battery or device overheats, expands, smokes, or burns during a flight. FAA guidance says crew members are trained to recognize and respond to lithium-battery fires. Do not adapt household advice—or try to use personal suppression equipment—in place of alerting the crew.
