Amazon Aurora is a relational database engine managed through Amazon RDS. RDS is the broader managed database service: it offers Aurora as well as conventional MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle, SQL Server, and Db2 engines. Choose between Aurora and a conventional RDS engine based on compatibility, workload, availability needs, and total cost—not on the assumption that one is always faster or cheaper.

What is the difference between Aurora and RDS?

Amazon RDS is the managed service and control plane; Aurora is one of the database engines you can run through it. AWS describes Aurora as a cloud-native relational engine with a storage and replication architecture designed for cloud performance and resilience. Conventional RDS options provide managed hosting for familiar open-source and commercial database engines. AWS’s Aurora overview and RDS service page describe the relationship and available engines.

This means “Aurora vs. RDS” usually means Aurora versus a conventional RDS engine such as RDS for PostgreSQL or RDS for MySQL—not two unrelated services.

How do the options compare?

Factor Aurora Conventional RDS engine
Service relationship An engine managed through Amazon RDS A database engine hosted and managed through Amazon RDS
Engine compatibility MySQL-compatible or PostgreSQL-compatible Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle, SQL Server, or Db2
Storage Distributed Aurora storage layer with automatic growth and cross-Availability Zone durability, as described by AWS Storage behavior and deployment choices depend on the engine and configuration
Replicas and availability AWS documents support for up to 15 Aurora Replicas across as many as three Availability Zones Read-replica and Multi-AZ choices vary by engine
Managed operations Provisioning, patching, backups, recovery, monitoring, and failure management, subject to configuration The same broad managed-service model, with engine-specific controls
Cost drivers Compute, storage, I/O, and the Standard or I/O-Optimized configuration Engine, instance class, storage, availability and replica configuration, backups, and data transfer

What does Aurora change about storage and availability?

Aurora’s main architectural distinction is its distributed storage subsystem, rather than merely a different label for a MySQL or PostgreSQL instance. AWS describes that storage as designed for durability across Availability Zones. Aurora also supports replica-based read scaling; AWS documentation describes up to 15 Aurora Replicas spanning as many as three Availability Zones. See the Aurora User Guide overview for the documented architecture and limits.

Those capabilities can suit applications that need Aurora’s cloud-specific storage and failure model. They do not remove the need to choose the right deployment, configure recovery objectives, and test failover behavior for the application.

Are Aurora and RDS both managed?

Yes. Both are managed database options in Amazon RDS. AWS handles operational work such as provisioning, patching, backups, recovery, monitoring, and failure management, but the exact controls and behavior depend on the engine and deployment configuration. Managed does not mean configuration-free: teams still need to select capacity, set backup and availability options, monitor performance, and test recovery.

Is Aurora faster than RDS, or cheaper?

Neither has a universal advantage. Aurora’s design targets cloud-native performance and availability, but that is not proof that it will outperform every conventional RDS engine for every query or workload. Compare the actual engine versions, instance classes, query patterns, concurrency, and I/O profile you expect to run.

Cost is similarly workload-dependent. Aurora offers Standard and I/O-Optimized configurations; AWS positions I/O-Optimized for I/O-intensive applications and more predictable pricing. Conventional RDS costs vary with engine, instance class, storage, Multi-AZ and read-replica choices, backups, and data transfer. Use the Aurora pricing page and RDS pricing page to model comparable configurations, then estimate using your expected utilization and measured workload rather than comparing a single instance price.

When should you choose Aurora?

  • Choose Aurora when its distributed storage, cross-Availability Zone durability, replica-oriented scaling, or cloud-native failure model addresses a real workload requirement.
  • It is a fit when MySQL or PostgreSQL compatibility meets your application’s needs and Aurora-specific capabilities justify any added cost or compatibility constraints.
  • Validate required engine versions, features, and extensions before migrating; compatibility does not guarantee that every behavior matches the corresponding conventional engine.

When is a conventional RDS engine the better choice?

  • Choose conventional RDS if you require Oracle, SQL Server, MariaDB, or Db2 rather than Aurora’s MySQL- or PostgreSQL-compatible editions.
  • It may also be the better fit when your application depends on a specific engine version, extension, or behavior not available in the Aurora edition you are considering.
  • Prefer it when familiar engine behavior or a simpler cost model matters more than Aurora-specific architecture, provided the chosen RDS deployment meets your availability and recovery needs.

How to make a practical choice

  1. Confirm engine requirements. List the database engine, version, extensions, and behaviors your application requires. Eliminate options that do not support them.
  2. Define availability and recovery needs. Set recovery-point and recovery-time objectives, then compare how the candidate deployments meet them.
  3. Model the workload. Estimate compute, storage growth, I/O, read traffic, backups, and data transfer. For uncertain performance or cost, test representative queries and concurrency on candidate configurations.
  4. Compare like-for-like pricing. Use AWS’s pricing tools for your target region and configuration, including replicas and availability settings, and account for expected utilization.
  5. Choose the simplest option that meets the requirements. Adopt Aurora for meaningful Aurora-specific benefits; otherwise, a conventional RDS engine may be the more straightforward choice.
