FlyBudget is a budgeting app its creator, dtymo, describes as free and open source, with monthly budgets, transaction tracking, accounts and reporting. The project is built around an option to self-host, alongside a live demo and documentation. Those are the creator’s and launch discussion’s descriptions—not an independent security review or hands-on feature test.
Why its creator built FlyBudget
In an October 2, 2026 launch article, dtymo says they had tried many budgeting apps and found pieces they liked, alongside aspects they wanted to work differently. Rather than identify particular products as the source of individual features, the article describes FlyBudget as a personally useful alternative shaped by ideas from other apps and open-source projects. The creator’s stated goal is to keep FlyBudget free, private and open source. The launch discussion presents it as a project seeking bug reports, feature suggestions, code contributions, documentation improvements and feedback; dtymo also says it is early and may change. That framing matters: the launch materials describe an evolving project, not a mature product with independently verified guarantees.

In response to a launch-discussion question about entering data quickly, dtymo says external APIs can sync transactions daily. The creator also supports manual entry, explaining that some users value it for accuracy and attentiveness. The discussion does not name the API providers, banks or account coverage, so readers should check the current documentation before assuming their institutions are supported.

One commenter said they could not find a setting to give an account another currency in the demo. That is a report about what was apparent to that commenter, not confirmation that multiple currencies are unsupported. Check the current demo or documentation for the behavior you need.
What self-hosting does—and does not—establish
dtymo presents self-hosting as a way for users to retain control of their financial data, writing: “Financial data is personal, and I like giving people the option to run FlyBudget themselves and keep control of their data.” That explains the creator’s rationale; it does not establish that the app’s security has been audited or that a particular deployment is secure.
