The moment showed a visible failure to deliver a prompt answer in that demonstration. It does not, by itself, reveal why the agent stalled or how reliably Dots works in other situations.
What happened during the Dots demonstration?
Futurism reported that OpenAI product team member Holly Li called the agent on her phone during DevDay and asked, “Can you catch me up on just user testing from last night?” The agent replied, “Checking that now,” but did not provide the requested update in the exchange described in the report. When Li asked how it was going, Futurism says the agent answered, “still checking.” Li then joked, “I guess Dottie’s having a slow morning.”
Those details and quotations are attributable to Futurism’s account; the available sources do not include an independently reviewed full event recording or transcript. OpenAI’s DevDay 2026 page places the event at Fort Mason in San Francisco on September 29, but does not independently confirm the demonstration exchange.
What is Dots?
OpenAI describes a dot as an always-on agent in ChatGPT that can take responsibility for ongoing work and continue making progress between conversations. According to the Help Center, dots can use apps a user connects, retain context for ongoing work, and operate with a cloud computer. Users can set a goal and specify what the agent may do independently, then review its results; the agent can seek human judgment when needed. OpenAI’s Deployment Safety Hub likewise describes dots as always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, with a cloud computer, browser, connected tools, and continuing work.

What the demo does—and does not—show
In the reported exchange, Dots acknowledged the request but did not return the requested recap while Li and the audience were waiting. That is a concrete failure to complete the task promptly in this instance. The sources do not establish whether the delay came from the model, a connected app, network conditions, or another cause, nor whether the agent eventually completed the task.
Neither Futurism’s report nor the official product material provides incident diagnostics or an independently measured reliability rate. One stage demonstration therefore cannot establish a system-wide outage or typical Dots performance. Futurism mentions Meta Muse for context, but the incident is not a controlled comparison: there are no comparable task-completion, latency, or recovery measurements here.

Who can access Dots?
OpenAI’s Help Center describes a gradual rollout whose eligibility depends on plan and region. At the time the Help Center was accessed for this report, it listed Pro rollout outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom; Business Premium availability in supported ChatGPT regions; and Enterprise beta access when a workspace administrator enables it. These terms can change, so check the live Help Center for current eligibility and usage rules.
The Help Center also said eligible usage would not count toward plan allowances for the next month, with later usage terms to be shared. Futurism described Dots as being behind a $100-per-month tier “at least for now,” but that price claim is not corroborated by the Help Center’s rollout description, which covers multiple plans and does not name that price. It should not be treated as confirmed current pricing.
