Check seat height and depth, back support, armrests, and foot support together—not as a generic feature list. Even a well-adjusted chair is not a reason to sit motionless all day.
How to tell whether your computer chair fits
Start with how you sit at your actual workstation, not the chair’s label or advertised features. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) puts it plainly: “A chair becomes ergonomic only when it specifically suits a worker’s size (body dimensions), their particular workstation, and the tasks that must be performed there.” There is no single chair that automatically fits everyone.
With the chair positioned for your desk, check whether you can sit back against the backrest while your legs and arms remain comfortable. OSHA describes a well-designed, appropriately adjusted chair as “an essential element of a safe and productive computer workstation,” but fit depends on adjustment and the rest of the setup.
- Feet: Your feet should rest fully on the floor or a stable footrest. OSHA describes a suitable position as one in which the full sole is supported and the back of the knee is slightly higher than the seat.
- Seat depth: The seat should support your thighs without its front edge pressing into the backs of your knees. You should be able to sit back against the backrest.
- Backrest: The backrest should support the lower back’s curve without creating pressure points. Adjustable lumbar positioning can help you place that support where it suits you.
- Arms and shoulders: Armrests should let your shoulders relax and your elbows stay near your body. If they force your shoulders upward or prevent you from getting close to the desk, adjust them, leave them unused, or remove them if possible.
These checks are practical fit signals, not a diagnosis or a guarantee against pain or injury. If sitting causes persistent discomfort, consider seeking appropriate professional advice rather than assuming a chair adjustment will resolve it.

Adjust the chair and desk as one workstation
Set up the chair in relation to your monitor, keyboard, and desk. OSHA advises adjusting these workstation components together. A chair that feels comfortable away from the desk may not fit once the keyboard is in reach or the desk edge blocks its armrests.
- Position the chair at the desk. Move close enough to use the keyboard without reaching, and check that the chair frame or armrests do not collide with the desk.
- Set seat height for foot support. Aim for full-sole support on the floor. If the desk requires a seat height at which your feet are unsupported, use a stable footrest to provide support.
- Set seat depth and back support. Sit back against the backrest, then adjust the seat depth and lumbar position, if available, so your thighs are supported without pressure behind the knees.
- Set armrests around your working posture. Keep shoulders relaxed and elbows close to your body. An armrest that obstructs desk clearance or lifts your shoulders is not helping the fit.
- Check the whole setup while working. Confirm that the chair remains comfortable when you use your monitor and keyboard in their normal positions.
When a footrest or cushion can help
Use a footrest for a specific height mismatch
If your feet cannot rest fully on the floor because the seat must be raised to work at the desk, a stable footrest can provide support. It is a conditional solution to that mismatch, not an automatic chair upgrade. Recheck your sitting position after adding it.

Consider a removable lumbar cushion if the chair lacks support
OSHA describes a removable back-support cushion as a temporary way to support the lower back when a chair does not provide adequate support. It does not make every chair suitable; check whether the cushion lets you sit back comfortably and maintain a workable position at the desk.
How to compare chairs without relying on a generic spec list
Compare the available adjustment range with your own dimensions and workstation. OSHA’s purchasing guide gives example criteria, but warns that they may not accommodate all body types; its example measurements are not universal fit rules or proof that a chair suits most people.

Try chairs for fit rather than selecting one solely because its feature list sounds comprehensive. OSHA recommends trying different chairs and advises an extended fit trial before purchase.

OSHA says sitting still in the same posture for prolonged periods is not healthy. Change position, stretch, and stand or walk periodically, even when the chair and workstation are adjusted well. The goal is a workable setup that supports your tasks—not one fixed posture for the entire day.
