For a container you plan to keep, also configure credentials, durable storage, and trusted TLS; a running container alone does not make NiFi state durable or production-ready.
Start a standalone NiFi container
The official image’s minimal command starts one instance and maps container port 8443 to port 8443 on your host:
docker run --name nifi
-p 8443:8443
-d

This example uses the mutable latest tag for simplicity. For a deployment you need to reproduce, choose a specific image tag appropriate to your NiFi release and record it with your configuration; the image documentation lists the supported environment variables and settings. Set credentials and understand the first login
By default, the image generates a random username and password at startup and writes them to the application log. Retrieve the generated credential message with:
docker logs nifi | grep GeneratedTo set the standalone single-user credentials yourself, provide SINGLE_USER_CREDENTIALS_USERNAME and SINGLE_USER_CREDENTIALS_PASSWORD as container environment variables. The documented minimum password length is 12 characters; if the supplied password is shorter, NiFi generates random credentials instead. Apache NiFi image documentation

For a local test, environment variables are convenient. For production, use a secret-management mechanism rather than putting credentials in a checked-in Compose file or shell history. The image documentation also describes mutual TLS with client certificates and LDAP as authentication options. NiFi Administration Guide
Choose ports and heap settings deliberately
The image lists these default container ports. Publishing a port with Docker makes it reachable through the host mapping, so expose only the interfaces your deployment actually needs.

For the documented standalone HTTPS setup, publish 8443 as in the run command; do not publish HTTP or debugging ports unless your design specifically calls for them. The image supports heap sizing with NIFI_JVM_HEAP_INIT and NIFI_JVM_HEAP_MAX; values can use forms such as 512m or 1g. Select values for your workload and available memory rather than treating examples as recommended sizing. Apache NiFi image configuration
Persist state beyond the container lifecycle
A container’s writable filesystem is not a persistence plan. The official Compose example warns that instance data may be lost when containers are removed or scaled down. Before relying on a deployment, provide durable volumes or external mounts for the NiFi state and logs that must survive recreation, and establish ownership and a backup policy. - Decide which state and logs must survive container replacement.
- Mount durable storage for that data and set permissions so the container can use it.
- Define how the data will be backed up and restored, then test recovery rather than assuming a volume alone is a backup.
The exact mount layout depends on the image release and the persistence design. Use the image’s documentation for its volume and configuration conventions instead of assuming that any arbitrary host directory captures all required state.

docker-compose up -dFor that example, the UI’s mapped host port can be queried with:
docker-compose port nifi 8080Compose can assign a host port dynamically, so check the command’s output rather than presuming the host side is 8080. The example also shows scaling the service:
docker-compose up --scale nifi=3 -dScaling the service is not by itself a complete NiFi cluster configuration. The Compose example cautions that NiFi does not manage removed nodes and that data on instances can be lost when containers are scaled down or removed. A multi-node deployment needs deliberate stable node identity, cluster communication ports, TLS and trust configuration, and a persistence plan with shared or intentionally partitioned storage. Configure HTTPS and reverse proxies
The secure standalone startup uses HTTPS with a generated self-signed certificate. A browser warning is therefore expected until you configure a certificate trusted by the client. Replace generated certificates and credentials with managed ones for non-local use. Image documentation

If a reverse proxy terminates TLS or serves NiFi under a path prefix, configure NiFi’s proxy host and context path to match the external address. Otherwise, redirects and generated links may point to an address or path that users cannot reach. Practical deployment checklist
- Select a specific Apache NiFi image tag for the target release and keep that tag with the deployment configuration.
- Set up durable mounts for state and logs, including container ownership, backups, and a tested restore process.
- Publish HTTPS 8443 and only the additional site-to-site or cluster ports your design needs; avoid exposing HTTP without a controlled reason.
- Configure credentials through secrets, or choose and configure the intended authentication method such as client-certificate mutual TLS or LDAP.
- Start the container or Compose service, then inspect logs for generated credentials and startup errors.
- Open the external NiFi URL, configure a trusted certificate for non-local use, and verify proxy host and context-path settings if applicable.
- Before production clustering, test scale-up, restart, and scale-down against the actual persistence and node configuration.
