There is no single best rideshare or delivery app for every driver. Uber offers an open, on-demand marketplace for rides and delivery, DoorDash lets Dashers choose when and where to deliver, and Amazon Flex uses delivery blocks that drivers select when available. The right fit depends on whether you want passenger trips, food delivery, shopping or package routes—and whether those offers are actually available during your hours in your area.
How to choose an app for flexible work
“Flexible” describes how a platform lets you engage with work; it does not promise that requests or shifts will be available whenever you want them. Compare the way work is offered, the tasks involved, pay visibility and local onboarding before signing up.
- Work access: Is work offered when you log in, through a dash or planner, or in scheduled blocks?
- Work type: Would you rather carry passengers, collect restaurant orders, shop, or deliver packages?
- Offer information: What can you see before accepting, and can you reject an offer?
- True work time: Separate paid active time or a booked block from waiting, repositioning and other unpaid time.
- Local fit: Check current requirements, waitlists, service area, vehicle eligibility and payout terms in the app or local onboarding page.
Uber’s 2026 comparison guide covers Uber Eats, DoorDash, Instacart, Amazon Flex, Grubhub and Walmart Spark, but notes that offerings overlap. It also says its own earnings figures use anonymized aggregated U.S. data while competitors’ figures come from public information, so they may not be directly comparable: Uber’s delivery-app comparison guide.
How the main work models compare
| Platform | How work is accessed | Work and offer details | Published pay information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber / Uber Eats | Uber describes rideshare as an open marketplace without shifts or set schedules, subject to a total online-hours limit. For Uber Eats, Planner reservations may be required in some busy zones, with access potentially dependent on status. | Rides and deliveries in one app for eligible workers. Uber says delivery offers show estimated earnings, pickup and dropoff locations, and distance before acceptance. Car, bicycle, scooter or walking options depend on local eligibility and availability. | Uber describes delivery fares as based on anticipated time and effort plus real-time area factors; promotions may be available and couriers retain 100% of tips received. No comparable independent net-income figure is established here. |
| DoorDash | DoorDash says Dashers choose when, where and how much to dash. Check the app for local access and availability. | Restaurant and other deliveries, without passengers. The offer’s guaranteed minimum is shown before acceptance, according to DoorDash. | DoorDash says per-offer base pay is $2–$10+ depending on time, distance and desirability. This is a company-stated range per offer, not hourly earnings. Its Earn by Time option, where offered, guarantees a minimum rate for active time on an accepted delivery. |
| Amazon Flex | Drivers choose available delivery blocks in the Flex app; blocks may be planned in advance or available the same day. A suitable block must be available. | Package delivery using your own vehicle. Amazon says block earnings are visible in advance. | Amazon’s 2025 page says most delivery partners earn $18–$25 per hour depending on location and other factors. This is Amazon’s gross-earnings claim, not guaranteed take-home pay. |

Uber and Uber Eats: open marketplace, with local exceptions
For drivers who value being able to go online without booking a shift, Uber’s U.S. marketplace model may be a fit. Uber says there are no shifts or set schedules, though an online-hours limit applies. It reports that more than 50% of its U.S. drivers drive fewer than 10 hours per week; the page does not state a year for that figure, and it is Uber’s own claim, not an independently validated measure. Uber also says demand—and the potential to earn—varies by time and place.
Delivery access is not necessarily identical everywhere: Uber’s guide says couriers in some busy zones may need a Planner reservation, and access can depend on status. For eligible workers, the app can combine rides and delivery requests. Uber describes delivery offers as showing estimated earnings, pickup and dropoff locations, and distance before acceptance. Its stated delivery modes—car, bicycle, scooter or walking—depend on market and eligibility.

Uber says couriers can choose weekly bank deposits or cashouts. Its earnings page describes Instant Pay as available up to six times per day on the page reviewed, but feature eligibility and fees can change, and bank arrival may vary. Check current terms in your app rather than assuming a payout option or fee applies everywhere.
DoorDash: choose when to dash and review offers
DoorDash says U.S. Dashers decide when, where and how much to work. A smartphone and a mode of transportation are needed; listed U.S. options can include a car, bicycle, scooter or motorcycle. Drivers using a car need a valid license and insurance. Requirements can vary with local rules, so verify them for your city or state.

On per-offer work, DoorDash says pay includes base pay, promotions and tips. Base pay reflects estimated time, distance and desirability, and the company says the full guaranteed minimum appears before acceptance. Its published $2–$10+ base-pay range is per offer and varies with those factors; it is not a typical hourly rate or a take-home estimate.
Where DoorDash offers Earn by Time, the stated minimum guaranteed hourly rate applies to active time engaged in an accepted delivery, not automatically to every hour spent logged in or waiting. Account for idle time when comparing your results.

Amazon Flex: schedule around available delivery blocks
Amazon Flex differs from an open marketplace: drivers use their own vehicles and select available delivery blocks in the app. Amazon says blocks may be planned ahead or appear the same day, but the schedule is constrained by what is available and fits your calendar. Amazon’s official description is: “Delivery partners simply open the Amazon Flex app, choose available delivery blocks that fit their schedule, and start earning.”
Amazon says most delivery partners earn $18–$25 per hour, depending on location and other factors, on its 2025 page. Treat that as Amazon’s published gross-earnings claim—not a guarantee, independent estimate or net figure after fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, taxes and other costs. Amazon also says partners see block earnings in advance, have no minimum delivery requirement to remain active, and may access earnings shortly after finishing through Cashout and Instant Pay features. Its rewards program may include discounts on fuel, vehicle maintenance, auto parts, safety footwear and other expenses; check current terms in the app.

Other apps to compare locally
Instacart, Grubhub and Walmart Spark are other services named in Uber’s comparison guide. Their inclusion does not establish that they are available in your area or a better fit for your hours. The information cited here does not support ranking them against Uber, DoorDash or Amazon Flex on local access, exact driver requirements or net earnings. Lyft is another passenger-rideshare option, but its driver terms are not covered here. Check each service’s current local signup information before deciding.
Compare what you actually keep, not just a headline rate
No like-for-like independent net-income comparison is established among these platforms. Company earnings figures are not directly interchangeable: one may describe a delivery offer, another active delivery time or a scheduled block, and none automatically accounts for every cost or unpaid hour.
- Track all work time. Record time online or reserved, time on accepted work, waiting, driving to a pickup and repositioning after a dropoff.
- Record income by platform. Include fares or base pay, tips and promotions, and distinguish gross earnings from amounts after expenses.
- Log operating costs. Include fuel, maintenance, depreciation, phone and data costs, insurance and taxes.
- Compare like with like. Use your own records for similar days, areas and hours. A block’s stated pay or an offer’s displayed minimum alone does not show your effective earnings across the full time you committed.
What to check before signing up
- Whether the platform is accepting drivers in your city or has a waitlist.
- Current minimum age, background screening, driving-history, insurance and vehicle requirements.
- Which delivery or rideshare modes are allowed locally and what work types are active nearby.
- Whether you can go online freely, need planner access, or must claim a block.
- Current payout methods, eligibility rules, fees and expected bank processing.
- Local requirements for insurance, taxes, licensing and safe phone use while driving.
A phone mount can be a useful convenience for navigation and app use, but the sources do not establish it as a requirement. Choose equipment compatible with your phone and vehicle, and follow applicable hands-free rules.
