The comparison does not account for each driver’s expenses, unpaid time, local demand, or benefit eligibility. To choose between Lyft and Uber, compare what you actually earn after costs over the same hours in your market—and check which local benefits you qualify for.
Does Uber or Lyft pay drivers more?
Gridwise’s analysis of tracked-driver data for 2025 reports the following median gross total trip pay. Gridwise reported the figures in 2026; they are observational sample results, not guaranteed wages or forecasts for an individual driver.
| Platform | Median total trip pay | Median gross pay including bonuses and promotions |
|---|---|---|
| Uber | $21.18 per work hour | $21.92 per work hour |
| Lyft | $19.48 per work hour | $20.38 per work hour |
These are gross figures before vehicle expenses. See Gridwise’s Uber analysis and Gridwise’s Lyft analysis for the dataset and metric definitions. The medians do not show which app will deliver better net earnings for you or settle the comparison in every city. Gridwise’s Q2 2026 report also illustrates that driver pay and the factors affecting it can shift over time.
Gross pay is not take-home pay
Your net result depends on more than fares, tips, and promotions. Account for fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, vehicle financing or rental, taxes, unpaid waiting, and time spent repositioning between rides. An hourly figure based on trips or eligible time should not be treated as a guaranteed hourly wage for all the time you spend working.

How do Lyft and Uber calculate eligible time?
Definitions matter when comparing a pay floor or benefit threshold: time online in the app may not count the same way as time on an eligible trip.
| California measure | Lyft | Uber |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible time | Booked time, from accepting a ride request through passenger drop-off | Active time, from accepting a request through completing the trip; online waiting is excluded |
| Floor described by the platform | At least 120% of minimum wage for booked time, plus $0.37 per booked mile while booked with a passenger | 120% of the applicable minimum wage for active time, plus $0.37 per vehicle mile |
| Top-up calculation | Not stated on the cited California driver page | Uber’s California FAQ describes a two-week calculation and a top-up if eligible earnings fall below the floor |
These are California-specific descriptions, not nationwide pay promises. See Lyft’s California driver information and Uber’s California Proposition 22 FAQ for current terms. Because online waiting is excluded from Uber’s active-time measure, the floor does not cover every hour you may spend available for rides.
Lyft upfront pay estimates
Lyft says drivers may see a route and total earnings before accepting an offer, along with an estimated hourly rate. Lyft explicitly cautions that the estimated rate is not a guarantee of actual hourly earnings. Its pay page also says that if Lyft’s total fee from all rides is more than 30% at month end, the driver receives an earnings adjustment. Neither statement should be read as a guaranteed hourly wage or a universal promise that drivers keep a fixed share of every fare. Check the current explanation in Lyft’s upfront-pay guidance.

Which app offers more flexibility?
There is not enough evidence here to name one app as more flexible for every driver. Lyft’s California page says, “When you drive with Lyft, you call the shots. Need flexibility? Drive whenever (and wherever) you want.” That is Lyft’s description of its service, not independent evidence that drivers receive more useful schedule choice than they would with Uber.
In practice, flexibility is only useful if it fits your schedule and produces workable offers in your area. Before choosing, check each app’s current local options for viewing offers, setting destinations, and pausing requests if those functions matter to your routine. Ride availability, incentives, and the value of a shift can vary by market and time.
What benefits do drivers get?
Benefits are location-specific and eligibility-based. California and Massachusetts illustrate how much terms can differ; check the current state page before relying on a rate, threshold, or coverage description.

California
- Lyft: Its California page describes a floor of 120% of minimum wage for booked time, plus $0.37 per booked mile. It says drivers who average at least 15 booked hours per week in a calendar quarter may qualify for a healthcare subsidy if they submit proof of qualifying insurance. The page also describes occupational accident insurance for on-the-job injuries. See Lyft’s California driver information.
- Uber: Its Proposition 22 FAQ describes a floor of 120% of the applicable minimum wage for active time, plus $0.37 per vehicle mile, with top-ups calculated over two weeks. It says a healthcare stipend requires at least 15 active hours per week in the quarter and qualifying health insurance. The FAQ also describes injury protection for injuries while online and notes that some top-ups, stipends, and insurance-premium values may be reported as taxable income. See Uber’s California FAQ.
The booked-time and active-time definitions differ, so the hourly thresholds are not directly interchangeable. Review the exact eligibility rules and what time counts before comparing the two programs.
Massachusetts
Uber’s Massachusetts help page describes a state-specific minimum earnings rate with a two-week calculation, paid sick leave accruing at one hour per 30 hours of active time up to 40 hours annually, occupational accident insurance for specified online, waiting, pickup, and trip periods on qualifying Massachusetts rides, and a portable health fund. Drivers averaging at least 15 hours weekly in a quarter may qualify for a half health stipend; those averaging at least 25 hours may qualify for a full stipend. Qualifying time on other rideshare platforms can be combined for that fund. The page also describes a family medical leave payment. Since eligibility and the operative rate can change, check Uber’s current Massachusetts help page rather than relying on an older summary. Uber’s announcement about the Massachusetts agreement provides background, while the help page gives the current terms.

New York State
Lyft’s New York State guide distinguishes trips outside New York City from NYC trips covered by TLC minimum-pay rules. It reports a non-NYC minimum updated as of March 2026 and describes paid sick and safe leave accruing at one hour for each 30 hours of rides, subject to a stated annual accrual cap. The guide also lists Express Drive rentals in select cities and driver, vehicle, document, and smartphone requirements. Rates and rules depend on location; consult Lyft’s New York State guide for the applicable terms.

How should you compare the apps for your own driving?
A useful comparison measures your actual shift, not just the time an app counts as active or booked. If you can use both services, compare them over the same kinds of days and hours in your area.
- Track total online time. Record when you go online and offline, not only trip or eligible time. Include waiting and repositioning when you can.
- Record earnings by source. Note gross fares, tips, promotions, top-ups, and completed trips separately so you can see what is recurring and what depends on incentives.
- Track miles and costs. Include trip miles and, where possible, miles driven between rides. Subtract fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, financing or rental costs, and applicable taxes before comparing net results.
- Check benefit rules for your location. Compare the time definitions, calculation periods, insurance or health coverage requirements, and other eligibility conditions—not just the headline floor.
- Judge offers against your real schedule. Consider ride availability and incentive reliability during the hours you can work, along with whether the app gives you useful information before accepting an offer.
Check insurance and vehicle terms before driving
Do not assume platform coverage replaces your personal auto policy. Lyft’s insurance overview explains coverage by trip phase and jurisdiction, with exceptions. For example, its contingent comprehensive and collision coverage applies only where the driver has comprehensive and collision coverage on the personal policy; it is limited to the car’s actual cash value and has a stated $2,500 deductible. Uber’s Massachusetts occupational accident terms address a different risk and period, so the two forms of coverage are not interchangeable.
Read Lyft’s insurance overview, the relevant local platform terms, and your insurer’s policy. Confirm how your personal coverage treats rideshare driving in your state before relying on a platform policy.
