On the Brother models covered by its support guidance, you cannot turn off Deep Sleep Mode. To change how quickly the printer begins conserving power, adjust Sleep Time instead. The menu path and available values depend on the exact printer model, so use its model-specific online guide rather than assuming one button sequence applies to every Brother printer.
Can I turn off Deep Sleep Mode?
Brother says Deep Sleep cannot be disabled on the models addressed in its newer HL and DCP guides. Its FAQ for the MFC-8510DN, MFC-8710DW, MFC-8810DW, and MFC-8910DW makes the distinction explicit: “Deep Sleep setting cannot be turned off, but the sleep mode setting can be adjusted.” That FAQ is dated November 15, 2012; its statement applies to the four named MFC models, not automatically to every Brother printer ever made. Brother support FAQ.
Brother’s guide for the HL-L2400D/L2405W/L2420DW/L2460DW family likewise says Deep Sleep cannot be disabled due to environmental considerations. Brother HL family guide. These sources describe Deep Sleep as an automatic power-saving state reached after the printer has already entered Sleep Mode and remains idle. The interval before that transition depends on the model and its settings.
How do I adjust Sleep Time on my Brother printer?
Sleep Time is the control to look for: it sets how long the printer waits before entering Sleep Mode or power-saving mode. Brother settings tables place it in model-specific menus, which may be called Machine Settings, General Settings, or Ecology. The exact labels, route, and available values vary. - Identify the full model number. Check the printer’s front, rear label, or status/settings page.
- Open the guide for that model and region. On Brother’s support site, select the exact model and open its Online User’s Guide.
- Find Sleep Time in the documented menu. Check Machine Settings or General Settings; on some models it is under Ecology or a similarly named section.
- Set the desired interval and confirm. Follow the guide’s control-panel instructions and save or confirm if prompted. Do not assume another model’s range or menu sequence applies.
- Test the behavior. Let the printer idle, then send a print job or use the wake control documented for that model.
Changing Sleep Time affects the idle timing; it does not disable Deep Sleep on the models covered by the cited Brother guidance.
Why does my Brother printer go into Deep Sleep?
Deep Sleep is an automatic energy-saving state that can follow Sleep Mode when the printer receives no work for a period. Brother says Deep Sleep uses less power than Sleep Mode, but the cited guides do not quantify the difference. The wait period is model- and setting-dependent, so the guide for the exact printer is the source for its behavior.

What is the difference between Sleep Time and Auto Power Off?
They govern different stages of idle behavior. Sleep Time controls the wait before Sleep Mode or power-saving mode. On some models, Auto Power Off controls whether the printer turns off after remaining in Deep Sleep for a set number of hours. It is not a Deep Sleep disable setting. Check the model-specific settings table before changing either control. Brother settings guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I wake my Brother printer from Deep Sleep?
Wake behavior differs by model. Brother’s cited guides identify receipt of a print job and interaction with the printer’s controls as wake events; the MFC FAQ also lists fax reception and copying. Use the exact model’s guide to confirm which events apply to your printer. If a print job does not wake it, check that guide for the specified control-panel action rather than assuming every model responds the same way.
