NVIDIA announced its Open Agent Safety Platform on September 28, 2026, combining runtime software controls with a hardware-backed monitoring design intended to detect and contain AI agents that exceed their permitted boundaries. NVIDIA says its Sentry layer can quarantine an agent “in milliseconds,” but that is a company claim, not an independently verified or universal performance result.

What is NVIDIA’s Open Agent Safety Platform?

NVIDIA describes the platform as an open software platform and reference system design for governing AI agents across software, compute hardware and robotics systems. It has two distinct components: OpenShell, which applies controls in the agent’s software runtime, and Sentry, a separate monitoring and enforcement design that runs on NVIDIA BlueField-4 data processing units (DPUs). NVIDIA’s announcement presents the pair as complementary layers, not interchangeable names for a single feature.

The approach reflects NVIDIA CEO and founder Jensen Huang’s statement that “Safety and security require full-stack engineering.” That is the company’s rationale for combining software policy controls with an independent hardware-backed watchdog, rather than relying on either layer alone.

How do OpenShell and Sentry work?

OpenShell sets software boundaries

OpenShell is the software layer. NVIDIA describes it as an open-source secure runtime boundary that traces an agent’s actions and enforces policy while the agent runs. In practical terms, the runtime boundary is where an organization defines permitted behavior and monitors actions against those rules.

NVIDIA says OpenShell can be extended to work with third-party compute platforms, including Arm and Intel. That portability statement applies to OpenShell; it does not mean the Sentry reference design is hardware-neutral.

Sentry monitors and enforces from outside the runtime

Sentry is NVIDIA’s out-of-band watchdog design. It runs on BlueField-4 DPUs and monitors agent behavior independently of the agent’s software boundary, then applies security policy if it detects an attempted violation. NVIDIA’s developer blog describes the technical architecture behind this monitoring and enforcement layer.

NVIDIA says Sentry can quarantine and stop an agent that attempts to move outside its software boundary “in milliseconds.” The launch materials do not provide an independently measured benchmark or establish that timing across different workloads, configurations or deployment conditions. Treat it as NVIDIA’s stated capability, not a guaranteed response time.

What does the platform require, and what does “open” mean?

Component Role Hardware and platform scope
OpenShell Runtime boundary that traces agent actions and enforces software policy NVIDIA says it can be extended to Arm and Intel compute platforms; the cited launch material does not specify a complete deployment requirements list.
Sentry Out-of-band monitoring and policy enforcement in the reference system design Runs on BlueField-4 DPUs; the cited reference design is tied to that hardware.

“Open” should not be read as meaning every part of the system is hardware-independent. NVIDIA characterizes the platform as open software plus a reference design, while Sentry’s stated implementation depends on BlueField-4. A BlueField-4 DPU alone is not equivalent to acquiring or deploying the complete platform.

Does it guarantee that an AI agent cannot go rogue?

No such guarantee is established by the launch materials. The platform is designed to trace actions, enforce defined policies and provide a separate containment layer; those functions do not prove that every harmful action will be detected or that every attack can be prevented. Its protection depends in part on how boundaries and policies are defined and how the system is deployed.

There is also an operational trade-off: a policy strict enough to block risky activity could interfere with legitimate agent behavior. The Associated Press highlighted that as an open implementation question. AP’s launch coverage also reported NVIDIA’s statement that more than 100 organizations were using the platform at launch, including Microsoft, Perplexity, Accenture and JPMorgan Chase. That is a company-reported launch figure, not an independently audited deployment count.

What should organizations evaluate before deployment?

The launch sources do not provide comparative benchmarks showing how the platform performs against other agent-security approaches. Teams assessing it should test their own workloads and policies, including:

  • Enforcement location: Identify which controls operate inside the agent runtime and which are enforced independently.
  • Monitoring independence: Determine whether an agent or its host context could bypass or disable monitoring.
  • Hardware and platform fit: Confirm whether OpenShell’s portability is sufficient or whether the BlueField-4 requirement for Sentry fits the deployment.
  • Policy coverage: Establish which actions, data and systems the rules cover, and how exceptions are handled.
  • Measured response: Benchmark detection and containment latency in the organization’s own stated conditions rather than assuming NVIDIA’s “milliseconds” claim will apply unchanged.
  • False positives and work impact: Check whether legitimate tasks are interrupted and how teams can review or recover from a quarantine.
