What the red button was supposed to do
In a first-person account published by HackerNoon on October 2, 2026, AmberMindStudio describes building CareVocal, internally called CareBridge, for their mother. The interface has green, yellow, and red status buttons. The red action was intended to save an entry for the doctor, prepare a prefilled SMS to trusted contacts, and open the dialer with the local emergency number entered.
The workflow was meant to prepare—not automatically send—the message or place the call. The person using the app would still need to confirm both actions. AmberMindStudio also says the alert should not wait for transcription, network access, or microphone input, and that the app does not collect location.
Why the two separate launches failed

AmberMindStudio first tried two consecutive startActivity calls: one for the SMS intent and then one for the dialer intent. In their initial test, the dialer appeared but the SMS draft did not. That is the observed result in this account; it does not establish what every Android device will do with the same calls.

A 500-millisecond pause: the SMS appeared, the dialer did not
The builder then inserted a 500-millisecond delay between launches. In a test with trusted contacts configured, the SMS draft opened, but the dialer did not. AmberMindStudio says the SMS app had taken the foreground and the second launch was refused.
The account says a real device with contacts exposed this second failure, which an emulator without contacts had not revealed. It does not identify the device model or Android version, so the result should be read as a report of that test rather than a general rule about emulators, contacts, or activity launches.

What changed with startActivities
AmberMindStudio replaced the separate launches with one context.startActivities(...) call containing the SMS and dialer intents, placing the dialer intent last. They report that the dialer then appeared above the SMS draft. When no trusted contacts were configured, their implementation used listOfNotNull so the SMS intent was omitted. The builder says they checked both the zero-contact and two-contact cases on their device.
The author summarized the change this way: “The mistake wasn’t the wrong delay. It was having a gap at all.” That is AmberMindStudio’s conclusion from this debugging experience, not an official Android recommendation or a cross-device finding.

Why recording became a separate action
The same account describes a separate usability change. CareVocal initially began a 15-second voice recording on the first red-button tap. AmberMindStudio realized that a user might be in the dialer and messaging app until that recording window had passed.
