Possibly—but the reported 33.77 million figure cannot tell you whether your information was involved. The Tech Edvocate reported that 397 healthcare data breaches in the first half of 2026 affected more than 33.77 million individuals. That is an aggregate across multiple reports, not one attack, and the figure is not independently corroborated by a primary government source in the material available here. To find out whether your information may be involved, look for a notice from your healthcare provider or health plan and check the organization’s entry in the official HHS breach portal.

What the 33-million figure does—and doesn’t—mean

The headline refers to a reported total across incidents. The Tech Edvocate says 397 healthcare breaches in the first six months of 2026 affected more than 33.77 million individuals. It does not describe a single attack that stole 33 million complete medical records. The count also does not establish that every person included had the same information exposed, or that every reported record was definitively stolen.

The figure is attributable to The Tech Edvocate; the evidence available here does not independently verify it against a primary government aggregate. A separate American Hospital Association statement says 364 hacking incidents reported to HHS OCR had affected more than 33 million Americans as of October 3, 2025. That is a different period and measure, not confirmation of the 2026 figure. American Hospital Association

How to check whether your information was involved

  1. Check messages from your provider and health plan. Look for email, postal mail, or a portal message identifying the organization affected. Read the notice for the incident date, the information involved, and any actions it says you should take. The aggregate figure alone cannot identify you.
  2. Search the HHS breach portal. Use the HHS Office for Civil Rights breach portal to look for the name of your provider, plan, or another organization that handles your health information. The portal lists reported breaches affecting 500 or more people, with fields such as reported number affected, submission date, breach type, and location of breached information.
  3. Read the entry as a report, not a personal confirmation. Check the organization name and incident details; distinguish discovery from submission dates, and note whether the count or status has been updated. Portal entries document reports and agency process. They do not show that you personally were affected, and a listed count should not be treated as proof that every person’s records were definitively stolen.
  4. Ask the organization if your status remains unclear. Contact the provider or plan using a phone number or website you already trust—not contact details from an unexpected message—and ask whether your information was included and what response steps apply.

What the HHS portal can tell you

HHS OCR’s portal covers breaches reported to the Secretary that affect 500 or more people. OCR says it reviews reports to determine whether it has legal authority to investigate. The portal is useful for checking reported incidents, but its scope is limited: it is not a complete real-time list of every possible exposure, and a portal match is not a determination about an individual’s records.

HHS distinguishes a breach’s discovery date from the date an organization submits its report. The portal’s reported count, incident type, affected location, and any revisions or investigation information can help you understand an entry, but the organization’s notice is the more direct source for what information it says was involved.

Why an organization’s deadline is not your notification date

Under HHS rules, a covered entity must report a breach of unsecured protected health information affecting 500 or more individuals without unreasonable delay and no later than 60 calendar days after discovery. A business associate may submit a report on a covered entity’s behalf. This is an organization’s reporting deadline to HHS; it does not establish when a particular person will receive a notice.
