JAXB (Java Architecture for XML Binding) connects XML documents and schemas with Java objects. It lets a Java application read XML into objects with unmarshalling, work with that data, and write objects back to XML with marshalling. JAXB can also validate XML against a schema when the application requires it.

What JAXB does

JAXB provides a binding between XML and Java representations. Rather than handling every XML element and attribute manually, an application can work with Java objects that correspond to the XML structure. The binding can be defined from an XML Schema (XSD), from annotated Java classes, or through a combination of generated and application-written code.

The architecture has three parts: a schema compiler that binds an XSD to generated Java elements, a schema generator that derives a schema from Java program elements, and a runtime framework for accessing, manipulating, and validating XML content. Oracle describes the overall process as a way to bind XML schemas and Java representations and automate the mapping between XML documents and Java objects (Oracle JAXB introduction; JAXB architecture).

How JAXB reads and writes XML

Unmarshalling: XML to Java

An Unmarshaller reads XML and creates a Java content tree: objects and values representing the document’s elements and data. Your application can then inspect or update that representation.

Marshalling: Java to XML

A Marshaller writes a Java representation as XML. The output structure follows the binding information, which may come from annotations or generated classes.

Validation

Validation checks whether XML content conforms to a schema. It is optional in the workflow: include it when your application needs to verify schema conformance, rather than assuming that every marshal or unmarshal operation automatically performs every check you need. The Jakarta specification describes the runtime operations and annotation-based mapping model (Jakarta XML Binding specifications).

A typical JAXB workflow

  1. Choose the starting point. For schema-first development, begin with an XSD and generate Java classes. For Java-first development, annotate Java classes and derive a schema if one is needed.
  2. Compile the classes. Compile generated classes along with your application code.
  3. Create a JAXBContext. This is the usual runtime entry point; it manages the binding information needed for marshalling, unmarshalling, and binder operations.
  4. Unmarshal input XML. Use an Unmarshaller to turn the document into Java objects.
  5. Work with the object tree. Read or change the Java representation as required by your application.
  6. Validate if needed. Apply schema checks where your input or output requirements call for them.
  7. Marshal output. Use a Marshaller to write the Java representation as XML.

Schema-first and Java-first approaches

Approach Starts with Typical JAXB role
Schema-first An XML Schema (XSD) A schema compiler generates Java elements and classes corresponding to the schema.
Java-first Java program elements, commonly annotated classes A schema generator can derive an XML Schema from the Java representation; the runtime uses binding metadata to read and write XML.

The choice depends on which representation is authoritative in your project. If an external XML contract defines the data format, XSD-driven generation can keep Java types aligned with that contract. If Java classes define the application model, annotations offer a way to describe how those classes map to XML.

JAXB and Jakarta XML Binding: understand the package namespace

Older JAXB material often uses the javax.xml.bind namespace. Current Jakarta XML Binding specifications use jakarta.xml.bind. These package names are not interchangeable: when reading examples or choosing libraries, match the namespace to the API and dependencies used by your project. Do not assume JAXB is included in every modern JDK; check the documentation for the JDK, Jakarta version, and runtime you are targeting.

Oracle’s JAXB tutorial identifies its examples as written for JDK 8, so it is useful for understanding the concepts but should not be treated as proof that its setup applies unchanged to a newer Java environment (Oracle tutorial introduction). For current package and specification details, consult the relevant Jakarta XML Binding documentation (Jakarta specifications; Jakarta XML Binding 4.0 API package).

Convenience methods or the direct runtime API?

The Jakarta JAXB class provides convenience methods that combine common JAXBContext, Unmarshaller, and Marshaller operations. They can make straightforward calls shorter. The API documentation cautions that these methods are generally not optimal for performance-critical code and that processing errors are wrapped in DataBindingException. For performance-sensitive applications or when you need direct control over runtime objects, use JAXBContext and the marshaller or unmarshaller APIs directly (Jakarta JAXB convenience class API).

When JAXB is a good fit

  • Your Java application needs to exchange data in an XML format described by a schema.
  • You want application code to work with Java objects rather than manually navigating XML for every operation.
  • You need to generate Java classes from an XSD, or describe XML mappings on Java classes.
  • Your application needs to validate XML against a schema as part of its data-handling process.

JAXB’s central idea is the binding: define how XML structure corresponds to Java representations, then use the runtime to read, work with, validate where required, and write that data.
