You can convert a video to MP4 without re-encoding—and therefore without losing quality—if its existing video and audio streams are compatible with MP4. That operation is called remuxing or streamcopy. If you change the codecs, resize the video, apply a filter, or otherwise alter the encoded streams, you must transcode; a new encode cannot be guaranteed to match the original quality exactly.

First decide whether you need a new container or new codecs

MP4 is a container: it holds video, audio, subtitles, and related information. The codecs determine how the video and audio streams inside that container are encoded. Changing a file from MKV to MP4 does not necessarily mean changing its video codec.

  • Remuxing (streamcopy): Changes the container while copying the existing encoded streams. It avoids re-encoding those streams, so their quality is preserved.
  • Transcoding: Decodes and encodes one or more streams again. Use it when you need a different codec or a transformation such as resizing or filtering. Because it creates a new encode, identical quality is not assured.

FFmpeg explains that streamcopy copies packets without decoding or encoding, but also cautions that the target container must accept the streams and their information. See FFmpeg’s documentation. If your goal is simply an MP4 file, try streamcopy first; transcode only when compatibility or a required change demands it.

Check the source before converting

Identify the source’s video and audio codecs and any tracks or properties you need to keep. Then decide whether the task is only to change the container or also to change a stream. This distinction determines whether a quality-preserving copy is possible.

  • CRYSTAL CLEAR PICTURE QUALITY: This coax to HDMI converter outputs stable 1080P@60FPS video, so every face, license plate and detail stays sharp — no more blurry, laggy analog footage on your new display
  • If the video and audio streams are accepted by MP4 and your playback device, remuxing may be sufficient.
  • If a stream is not accepted by the target container or playback device, that stream may need to be transcoded.
  • If you need to resize, filter, or otherwise alter video frames, streamcopy cannot perform that work. FFmpeg notes that filters operate on decoded frames, so filtering requires decoding and encoding.

Remux compatible streams with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s -c copy option requests streamcopy instead of encoding. For a source file named input.mkv, a basic command is:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4

This attempts to place the existing streams in an MP4 container without re-encoding them. It is fast and preserves the copied streams’ encoded quality, but it can fail if a stream or associated information is not supported by MP4. A successful command also does not by itself confirm that every track, subtitle, chapter, timestamp, or metadata item you care about was retained.

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

After conversion, check that the output plays in the intended application or device and that the expected video, audio, subtitle, and other tracks are present. If FFmpeg reports a container or stream compatibility problem, determine which stream is unsupported; copy streams that can remain unchanged and encode only those that must change. FFmpeg describes streamcopy, filtering, and stream handling in its documentation.

When transcoding is necessary, manage the quality tradeoff

Transcoding is required when you need a different codec or a frame-level transformation. It creates a new encoded stream, so there is no universal setting that guarantees an identical result across sources, codecs, encoders, and playback targets. A lossy-to-lossy transcode can reduce detail, and the result also depends on the encoder and chosen settings.

HandBrake’s documentation describes constant-quality encoding using RF/CRF controls and warns that settings pushed drastically lower can cause significant detail loss. Treat a quality control as a way to balance output quality, file size, and encoding work—not as a promise of lossless conversion. The appropriate value depends on the source and encoder; the documentation does not establish one universal value for every video. See HandBrake’s quality-adjustment guidance.

  1. Choose an encoder and output format that your target device supports.
  2. Use a quality-oriented rate-control option when preserving visible detail is the priority, and avoid assuming that a setting from one codec or encoder transfers directly to another.
  3. Encode a short, representative segment and inspect it on the intended playback device. Compare detail, playback compatibility, and file size before encoding the full video.
  4. Keep streams that do not need changes in copy mode where your workflow allows it. Verify the resulting tracks and playback rather than assuming they were preserved.

Choose settings for the playback target, not a supposed universal winner

Preset choices and hardware encoders affect encoding speed and output characteristics. HandBrake describes hardware presets as optimized for speed; that does not establish that hardware and software encoding will produce identical output. Compare the resulting codec, container, quality, file size, resolution, speed, and device compatibility for your specific use.

There is no universal file-size or speed result for a given video based on the available guidance: both depend on the source, encoder, settings, and workflow. FFmpeg offers command-line control over stream selection and copying; HandBrake offers a preset-based workflow. Choose the tool and settings that meet your playback requirements, and inspect the output rather than relying on a preset name alone.
