If YouTube keeps stopping, first work out whether playback is actually pausing or the video is buffering. A spinning loader or sudden drop in picture quality usually points to buffering; a pause right after you press Play can point to the player, browser, app, account, or device. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and replay the video: this quick test helps show whether the problem follows your connection or stays with one device or playback environment.
Why does YouTube keep pausing?
Not every interruption has the same cause. Buffering means the player is waiting for more video data; an actual pause means playback has stopped. Look for a spinning loader, repeated stalls, or a quality drop to identify likely buffering. If the video stops immediately after you press Play, investigate the app or browser, extensions, account, and device instead.
Notice how widely the problem occurs: with one video, one device, one browser, or every device on your home network. That pattern helps narrow down the next test.
How to stop YouTube from buffering: try these steps in order
-
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
Replay the same video using a different connection. If Wi-Fi seems to be the problem, try mobile data; if mobile data seems to be the problem, try Wi-Fi. YouTube recommends changing connection type as a troubleshooting step. Mobile data use may incur charges. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.

Lower the video quality
In the player, open Settings > Quality and choose a lower quality if available. A lower-quality stream asks less of a connection that may be struggling to keep up. If the video plays reliably at lower quality but stalls at higher quality, connection capacity or stability may be involved; this test does not identify the exact cause.
-
Pause competing network activity
Stop other downloads and streams, and reduce the number of devices using the connection. Competing traffic can leave less capacity for the video. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes reducing other network activity. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues and Troubleshoot YouTube video errors.

Check Wi-Fi range and interference
Move closer to the router and replay the video. Keep the router and device away from obstacles or interference where possible; walls and metal can interfere with a Wi-Fi signal. If playback improves nearby, Wi-Fi conditions may be contributing, though moving closer is a diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed fix. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.

Refresh the app, browser, and device
Update the operating system and the YouTube app or browser. Close and reopen the app or browser, close extra browser tabs, then restart the device if needed. Clear the app or browser’s stored data
On mobile, clear the YouTube app cache. In a browser, clear the cache and cookies, then sign in again if needed. This may help when stored data is contributing to a playback problem. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues and Troubleshoot YouTube video errors.
-
Test browser extensions and DNS settings
Temporarily disable ad blockers and other extensions, then test playback. If that helps, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify whether one affects playback. Also check whether third-party software has changed your DNS settings. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot YouTube video errors.

Why does YouTube work on mobile data but not Wi-Fi?
If the same video plays on mobile data but stalls on Wi-Fi, the difference points toward the Wi-Fi connection or home network rather than the video itself. It does not prove that the router is faulty. Check whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi also have trouble, reduce competing traffic, and test playback nearer the router.
If multiple devices show the same problem on your home Wi-Fi but work on another connection, focus on the shared network: its signal, placement, interference, or congestion. If only one device has trouble on Wi-Fi, continue testing that device’s app, browser, and software. A wired Ethernet connection can serve as a diagnostic comparison if Wi-Fi instability seems likely; it is not a guaranteed YouTube fix.

How to tell whether the problem is your browser, device, account, or YouTube
Compare playback in the official YouTube app and at youtube.com, then try another supported device. Keep the connection the same where possible so that the comparison is useful.
- One browser only: check its extensions, stored data, and updates.
- One device across the app and browser: update or restart the device and test its connection.
- Several devices on the same Wi-Fi: investigate the shared network conditions.
- Different playback environments or devices show the same issue: the problem may not be limited to one local app or browser. Test another connection and video before drawing a conclusion.
Sign in when appropriate for the comparison. If the issue persists, use YouTube’s Help and Feedback option to send feedback immediately after playback fails. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.
Why do YouTube live streams keep pausing?
Live playback has a delay-versus-buffer trade-off. YouTube explains: “Network congestion and other factors may also cause live programming issues, which can delay the stream.” Its guidance also notes that lower broadcast delay leaves less buffer and is more likely to interrupt playback. If stable playback matters more than minimizing spoilers or lag, choose Default for broadcast delay when that option is available. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.
