Premation is a free, open-source motion editor for macOS and Windows that supports keyframes, a graph editor, compositing and other motion-design tools. Its controls borrow specific ideas and shortcuts from Adobe After Effects, while CapCut also offers free keyframe animation—but the two editors target different workflows.
Premation launched on Product Hunt on July 30, 2026, so it was roughly two months old as of October 3, 2026. It is still pre-1.0 software: version 0.7.0 is labeled a public beta. That makes it worth exploring, not a proven replacement for a mature editor.
What Premation is—and who it is for
Premation is a desktop motion-design editor, not just a tool for trimming clips. Its feature set includes compositions, layers, keyframes, masks, mattes, 2.5D cameras, character rigging, particles and effects. It is aimed at people who want to animate and composite visual elements, especially those who already understand After Effects-style workflows.
The distinction matters if you are searching for a free video editor with keyframes. Keyframes can mean little more than setting a few points for position or scale, or they can be part of a deeper animation workflow with editable curves, layers and compositing. Premation is designed for the latter. The official product page describes it as a desktop motion design studio for keyframe animation, motion graphics, kinetic typography, character rigging and video compositing: Premation.

How Premation handles keyframing like Adobe
Premation’s strongest connection to Adobe After Effects is its animation model and shortcut conventions—not a claim that the programs have identical features. The editor supports keyframes on every numeric property, and its graph editor exposes both value and speed curves with Bézier handles. That gives you a way to adjust not only where an animated property starts and ends, but how it changes between those points.
It also uses familiar After Effects-style shortcuts: F9 applies easy ease, Shift+G opens the graph editor, and U reveals animated properties. These similarities may make the controls more legible to an After Effects user, but they do not establish feature parity or a frictionless project-file migration.

What the graph editor adds
A basic keyframe workflow sets property values at different times. A graph editor gives you finer control over the transition between them: for example, whether an object accelerates, decelerates or changes speed more sharply near a keyframe. Premation’s curves and Bézier handles are therefore more significant than the mere presence of keyframes if your work depends on shaping motion.
Premation vs CapCut: choose by workflow
Both editors offer free keyframe animation, but that overlap does not make them interchangeable. CapCut’s official page confirms keyframing in its browser, PC and Mac editor. Its emphasis is an all-in-one creator editor and social-video workflow; Premation’s is motion-design depth and controls familiar to After Effects users. Choose CapCut if the main job is producing social clips quickly with templates and a creator-focused workflow. Try Premation if you care more about shaping animation curves, stacking and compositing layers, or carrying over After Effects-style habits. Those are workflow distinctions, not a claim that either editor wins every project.
Is Premation really free, and does it work offline?
Yes: Premation’s local desktop build is described as free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. According to its documentation, it runs on your machine, needs no account or network connection, stores projects as .motion bundles and exports without a watermark. Those details make the local edition meaningfully different from an editor that requires a cloud account for core work.

There is also an optional hosted edition with cloud projects, sync, hosted rendering and an AI assistant. The company describes that edition as free during public beta and says paid plans are planned. That beta offer is separate from the local build’s stated free, open-source status. Premation is in public beta, not a finished 1.0 release. Its documentation labels version 0.7.0 as a public beta and warns that the project format may still change. If a project must remain stable across releases or fit a production pipeline, that maturity caveat deserves more weight than the feature list.

The feature count is substantial—Premation lists 183 effects, and its 0.7 release reports 177 running on the GPU—but quantity alone does not establish parity with After Effects. Premation’s own comparison acknowledges fewer effects than After Effects and missing rotoscoping; its feature documentation also marks camera solving, planar tracking and roto as not included. If those tools are essential to your compositing work, Premation is not a drop-in substitute.
There are no independent user-count, benchmark or time-saved figures established here. Treat the editor as an early tool to evaluate against your own projects, rather than relying on an adoption or performance claim.
How to decide whether to try it
- Try Premation if you want a free motion graphics editor for desktop, need an editable keyframe graph editor, or prefer an After Effects-style shortcut model.
- Stay with CapCut if fast, template-driven social-video editing is the priority and its workflow already meets your needs.
- Keep a mature compositor in the workflow if you depend on roto, planar tracking, camera solving, or a stable project format.
For keyboard-heavy motion work, a video-editing keyboard may be a useful accessory, but it is optional; Premation’s shortcuts can be used without dedicated hardware.
