PHP can turn text into playable or downloadable speech by sending it to a hosted text-to-speech (TTS) service, then saving or returning the audio bytes. Google Cloud provides an idiomatic PHP client, while Amazon Polly offers synthesis through the AWS SDK for PHP. In either case, set up the provider account, project, billing where required, and credentials before relying on the code.

How PHP text-to-speech works

A typical PHP TTS workflow has four parts: prepare plain text or SSML, select a language and compatible voice, request an audio format, and handle the returned audio bytes. You can write those bytes to a file or send them from your application as a response. The provider’s supported voices, engines, and formats determine which request combinations are valid.

  • Plain text is suitable when you need the service to speak the supplied words without additional speech-markup controls.
  • SSML lets you provide structured speech input where the provider supports it.
  • Audio handling is an application choice: save the result for later use or return it to a caller that can play or download it.

Generate speech with Google Cloud Text-to-Speech

Set up the project and PHP client

Google’s documented PHP route uses the google/cloud-text-to-speech Composer package, described by its maintainers as an idiomatic client library and generally available. Install it with:

composer require google/cloud-text-to-speech

Before making a request, enable the Cloud Text-to-Speech API in a Google Cloud project, enable billing, and configure authentication. Google’s quickstart points client-library users to Application Default Credentials; installing the package alone does not supply credentials or configure the project. See Google’s PHP client documentation and the client-library quickstart.

Build a synthesis request

The Google PHP client uses GoogleCloudTextToSpeechV1ClientTextToSpeechClient. The documented SSML example prepares an SSML input, selects a voice for en-US, requests MP3 encoding, calls synthesizeSpeech, and writes the returned audio content to output.mp3. The voice can be selected by name; the client also provides listVoices() to retrieve available voices.

The implementation pattern is:

  1. Create the text-to-speech client after project authentication is configured.
  2. Prepare the input as plaintext or SSML.
  3. Choose a language and a voice available for that input, then set the desired audio encoding.
  4. Call synthesizeSpeech and handle the returned audio content, such as by writing it to a file.
  5. Catch API exceptions and close the client when finished.

Google’s official PHP example includes the concrete request objects and file-writing code: Google Cloud Text-to-Speech PHP sample.

Use Amazon Polly from PHP

Amazon Polly accepts UTF-8 plaintext or valid SSML and returns audio in a requested format. Its synthesis request selects a voice and an engine; Polly lists standard, neural, long-form, and generative engines. The chosen engine must be supported by the chosen voice, so do not assume every voice is available with every engine or language.

The Polly API reference points PHP developers to AWS SDK for PHP V3. Consult the SynthesizeSpeech API reference for request fields and supported combinations.

Choose a provider for the application

Both services provide a PHP integration path, but neither is universally the better choice. Compare the actual requirements for your application and target audience:

Decision point Google Cloud Text-to-Speech Amazon Polly
PHP integration Composer package google/cloud-text-to-speech and documented PHP client. Source AWS SDK for PHP V3 is referenced by the API documentation. Source
Account and authentication setup Requires an enabled Cloud Text-to-Speech API, billing, and authentication; the quickstart points to Application Default Credentials for client libraries. Source Account and authentication specifics depend on AWS setup; see the API reference. Source
Input choices The documented PHP example uses SSML. Source UTF-8 plaintext or valid SSML. Source
Voice and engine selection The PHP example selects a language and voice; available voices can be retrieved with listVoices(). Source Supports standard, neural, long-form, and generative engines, subject to voice compatibility. Source
Output and delivery The example requests MP3 and writes audio content to a file. Source The request specifies an output format; the exact supported choices depend on the API. Source

For either provider, verify current language and voice availability, supported output formats, pricing, quotas, and geographic availability in the provider’s documentation before choosing. Those details can affect whether a configuration fits your deployment and audience.

Deliver the generated audio

Once synthesis succeeds, decide whether the application needs a persistent file or an immediate response. Google’s example writes the audio content to an MP3 file; the same returned bytes can instead be handled by application code that serves audio to a client. Match the response’s content type and filename to the format actually requested, and handle provider errors rather than treating every request as successful.
