EndeavourOS makes Arch Linux easier to install, but it does not remove the learning and maintenance that come with an Arch-based system. Its graphical Calamares installer and choice of online or offline installation can help newcomers get started; the project is explicit that it does not aim to be beginner-proof. It is most suitable for learners who want Arch-style control and are willing to use the terminal and troubleshoot.

What EndeavourOS is—and what this review can establish

EndeavourOS is an Arch Linux-based distribution designed to stay close to Arch while offering a guided route through installation. The project describes it as terminal-centric and personalizable, rather than a highly curated desktop with extensive guardrails. Its documentation says it “does not aim to be a beginner-proof, nor an overly opinionated distribution.” (EndeavourOS homepage; project documentation)

That makes “beginner-friendly” a question of fit, not a simple yes or no. The installer reduces the difficulty of getting a system installed; it does not make later package management, updates, or troubleshooting hands-off. This assessment is based on the project’s published documentation, not an independent installation or hardware test.

Is EndeavourOS beginner-friendly?

It can be approachable for a beginner who wants to learn Linux administration and accepts that some answers will require terminal use and troubleshooting. It is a less natural choice for someone who wants the operating system to make most decisions, minimize ongoing maintenance, or provide a highly guided experience.

What matters What EndeavourOS offers What that means for a new user
Installation Calamares graphical installer, with online and offline routes Less manual setup at installation time, but not a promise of beginner-proof support
Project philosophy Stays close to Arch and avoids being overly opinionated More room to personalize, with more responsibility for the user
Ongoing use Terminal-centric approach and Arch-oriented ecosystem Be prepared to learn package management and troubleshoot when needed
Starting desktop Offline installation uses the live-session image; online installation downloads the base and selected desktop packages The online route offers desktop selection but depends on a working internet connection

How installation works

EndeavourOS is distributed as a bootable live ISO and uses the Calamares installer framework to install an Arch-based desktop. The project documents two installation paths:

Offline installation

The offline route uses the live-session image, copies that system image to the installed system, and configures it. This can be useful when a network connection is unavailable, though it does not provide the online route’s package-download and desktop-selection process.

  • Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad

Online installation

The online route downloads the base system and selected desktop packages, allowing the installer to build a fresh installation and let you choose a desktop environment. It requires a working internet connection. (EndeavourOS installation documentation)

A graphical installer is a meaningful convenience, especially compared with installing Arch manually. It should not be confused with a fully managed system: users still need to understand updates, packages, and how to investigate problems using the project’s documentation and broader Arch-oriented resources.

Requirements and boot compatibility

The EndeavourOS homepage lists the following system requirements. These are the project’s published baseline figures, not independent performance recommendations or guarantees that every device will work well.

Requirement Published specification
Free disk space 15 GB
Memory 4 GB RAM
Processor 64-bit dual-core Intel or AMD processor
Firmware Modern EFI/UEFI systems without legacy CSM are described as working best

The homepage describes systemd-boot as the default for modern EFI systems and GRUB as an option with broader EFI and legacy BIOS coverage. A listed baseline does not establish compatibility with a particular graphics card, Wi-Fi adapter, or other device; check device-specific support before installing. (EndeavourOS homepage)

Should you choose EndeavourOS?

It may suit you if

  • You want to learn Linux administration while using an Arch-based system.
  • You value choice and personalization more than extensive defaults and guardrails.
  • You are willing to use terminal tools and consult documentation when issues arise.

Consider another distribution if

  • You want a beginner-proof or especially hands-off desktop experience.
  • You would rather avoid learning package management and troubleshooting.
  • You prioritize a highly curated system over staying close to Arch.

For readers drawn to Arch but hesitant about a manual installation, EndeavourOS offers a useful middle ground at install time. Whether it is a good first contact with Arch depends on whether that convenience is paired with a willingness to take responsibility for the system afterward.
