Choose Bedrock if you need to play with friends on consoles or mobile; choose Java if you mainly play on PC and want community mods or Java servers. If you’re buying on Windows, check the official Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC bundle and your Microsoft account library before paying: the PC bundle includes both editions. The editions still have separate multiplayer ecosystems, so owning both lets you switch between them—it does not let Java players join Bedrock games or vice versa.

Java vs. Bedrock at a glance

Minecraft’s official comparison presents the editions as different fits, not as a universal better-or-worse choice. The most important distinction is which devices and players you need to join, followed by the kind of content and controls you prefer.

Decision Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Cross-play group Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux Bedrock players on supported Windows PCs, consoles, and mobile devices
Community content Community mods and Java server communities Marketplace content and add-ons
Controls The official PC comparison does not list native controller or touch support Controller and touch support
Multiplayer ecosystem Separate Java worlds, servers, and Realms Separate Bedrock worlds, servers, and Realms
Windows purchase Included in Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC Included in the same official PC bundle

These are practical differences described on Minecraft’s official comparison page and its PC bundle page. Platform availability can change, so check the store or support page for the exact console generation you own.

Which version is better for you?

Choose Bedrock for friends on console, mobile, or mixed devices

Bedrock is the more straightforward choice when your group includes supported Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Windows, or mobile players. Its cross-platform play, controller and touch support, and Marketplace content are also useful if you prefer playing with a gamepad or touchscreen rather than a keyboard and mouse.

Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes the base game, three add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, and Plenty O’ Blocks), three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE — Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, and craft your way through a world filled with surprises in the ultimate sandbox game.
  • SURVIVE — Experience unforgettable adventures as you face mysterious foes, traverse exciting landscapes, and travel to perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Have a blast with friends, whether you’re sitting on the same couch in split screen or miles apart in cross-platform play for console, mobile, and PC.

Every player still needs a compatible Bedrock version and the relevant account and network access. Having Bedrock on one device does not make a Java player compatible with the same world.

Choose Java for PC mods and Java servers

Java is the natural fit if you play on Windows, macOS, or Linux and care most about community mods or Java server communities. Your multiplayer group must also be using Java; Java cross-play does not include Bedrock players on consoles or mobile.

Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Ultimate Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes the base game, five add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O’ Blocks, Decocraft, and Weapons + Tools), five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
  • CREATE — Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, and craft your way through a world filled with surprises in the ultimate sandbox game.

  • PLAY TOGETHER — Have a blast with friends, whether you’re sitting on the same couch in split screen or miles apart in cross-platform play for console, mobile, and PC.

The official comparison does not list native controller or touch support for Java on PC. If those inputs are central to how you play, Bedrock is the edition whose official feature list specifically includes them.

Choose based on the group, not a blanket quality ranking

Neither edition is categorically better. A PC player who wants mods may prefer Java, while a family or friend group spread across consoles and phones may get more value from Bedrock’s cross-platform ecosystem. If your interests span both, a Windows PC purchase can include both editions.

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?

No. Java and Bedrock have separate multiplayer ecosystems: players need to use the same edition to join a world, server, or Realm. Owning both editions on a PC gives you a choice of which one to launch; it does not bridge the compatibility split.

Within each edition, cross-play depends on the supported platforms and compatible game versions. Java cross-play covers Windows, macOS, and Linux Java players. Bedrock is the cross-play option across supported Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and mobile platforms. Minecraft’s multiplayer and cross-platform help page lists requirements; confirm current support for your specific console and country.

Do you have to buy Minecraft again for PC?

For a new Windows PC purchase, Minecraft currently offers Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, which includes both editions. Minecraft Help says the bundle launched on June 7, 2022; the date describes the bundle’s release, not a separate requirement to buy each edition.

If you already bought Minecraft for PC, check the account used for the purchase before paying again. Minecraft’s ownership and Launcher guidance recommends signing in to the Launcher or Microsoft Store with the purchasing account and checking whether each edition appears as owned. A purchase on a console or mobile platform should not be assumed to grant the PC bundle; verify ownership in the account library for the platform where you intend to play.

What do you need for online multiplayer?

Beyond choosing the same edition, players need compatible game versions, the required account sign-in, an internet connection, and any necessary permission for a child account. On consoles, online multiplayer may also require the platform’s paid online service. Minecraft Help lists Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online as relevant subscriptions; requirements and terms can vary by console and country, so verify them with the platform before subscribing.

For the current details and account requirements, see Minecraft’s multiplayer and cross-platform help page.

Are Realms shared between Java and Bedrock?

No. Minecraft offers separate Java and Bedrock Realms. A Realm subscription does not make a world joinable by players using the other edition, so choose the Realm that matches the edition your invited players use.

When accessed on October 2, 2026, Minecraft’s official Realms page displayed Bedrock plans at $3.99 USD per month and Bedrock Realms Plus at $7.99 USD per month. These are the prices shown on that date, not guaranteed future prices; check the page for current availability and pricing before subscribing.
