The replaceable part is a cover layer over iPhone Duo’s inner folding display—not a promise that the display panel itself is user-replaceable or inexpensive to repair. Apple describes the layer’s materials and protective purpose; its replaceability and service pricing have been reported separately. For U.S. customers with AppleCare+, MacRumors reports a $19 replacement fee. The uncovered price and whether customers can safely replace the layer themselves have not been established.
What is the replaceable layer?
Apple’s September 9, 2026 product announcement describes a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured polymer cover layer over iPhone Duo’s inner folding display. Apple presents it as a surface layer that protects the display, rather than as the folding display panel itself. The nano-texture finish is intended to minimize glare. Apple’s announcement also says its custom polymer cover layer has up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry; that is Apple’s material comparison, not an independent test of long-term durability.
What does “replaceable” mean?
In an interview reported by Tom’s Guide on October 1, 2026, Apple VP of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron said: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.” This supports the claim that the cover layer can be replaced, but it does not establish that owners have a supported DIY procedure, tools, or a replacement part they can install themselves.
Bergeron also said the matte coating helps minimize the crease and described engineering intended to help the cover layer wear over time. That is a reported intended benefit, not a claim that the crease disappears or that the layer is crease-proof. The announcement and reporting cited here do not establish how the layer performs after extended real-world use.

How much does replacement cost?
| Situation | Reported cost and limits |
|---|---|
| U.S. customer with AppleCare+ | MacRumors reports a $19 cover-layer replacement fee. This is a reported U.S. service price for customers with AppleCare+, not a universal or uncovered price. |
| Service without AppleCare+ coverage | Not stated in the cited MacRumors report; uncovered pricing was undisclosed. |
| Other regions | Not stated in the cited MacRumors report; no comprehensive regional price list is provided. |
The $19 figure is from MacRumors’ October 1, 2026 report. It should not be used to estimate the cost of replacing the entire folding display or to infer what an uncovered repair will cost.
Can you replace it yourself?
That remains unclear from the available reporting. Bergeron’s phrase “peel off that layer” describes the concept, but the report does not confirm a consumer repair process or say that self-removal is recommended. Before attempting to lift or replace anything, check Apple’s current service guidance for iPhone Duo; do not assume the built-in layer is equivalent to an ordinary screen protector.

What this means if you are worried about the crease or wear
A replaceable cover layer may offer a way to renew the surface without treating the cover itself as the whole folding display. The matte finish is reported to reduce crease visibility, while Apple says the layer protects the display surface. Neither point guarantees that the crease will be invisible, prevents every kind of damage, or establishes how long the layer will remain in good condition. No independent long-term durability measurements are established by the cited launch announcement and October reports.
