Ravello was Oracle’s public-cloud service for running existing VMware and KVM environments with little or no change to the virtual machines, network definitions, or storage. Nested virtualization and a software-defined networking overlay reproduced a multi-VM data-center topology on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, or Oracle Cloud, so teams could create short-lived development, test, demonstration, migration-validation, or lift-and-shift environments without first rewriting the application.

The service described in Oracle’s historical documentation is not proof of current availability, pricing, regions, or support. Those details require confirmation from current Oracle materials.

What Ravello was

Ravello presented a way to move an existing virtualized application environment rather than redesigning the application for a cloud-native platform. Oracle described deploying VMware or KVM-based data-center workloads “as-is, without any modification to the VMs, network, or storage.” The target was a complete application environment: its virtual machines, inter-machine connectivity, and storage relationships, not just one server image.

That distinction made Ravello useful where a conventional cloud migration would require changing operating systems, network assumptions, or application architecture before testing could begin.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

How the technology reproduced a data center

Nested virtualization

Ravello ran guest hypervisors inside public-cloud infrastructure. This nested-virtualization layer allowed existing VMware and KVM workloads to continue operating in the way their software expected, even though the physical servers belonged to the underlying cloud provider.

Software-defined networking

A software-defined networking overlay recreated the application’s virtual network and connected its machines across the cloud deployment. Oracle summarized the design as making the public cloud “look and feel like a data center.” The overlay was central to preserving multi-tier application topology for integration and system testing.

Supported public clouds

Oracle documentation named Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud as target providers for VMware and KVM workloads. Oracle separately announced Ravello availability on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in September 2017. These are historical capability statements; they do not establish that the service, regions, or integrations remain available today.

Question What the documented service provided Qualification
Can an existing VMware or KVM lab be moved without conversion? Deployment of VM, network, and storage definitions without modifying them Subject to the service’s supported workload and account requirements
Can the same environment run in different clouds? Oracle documentation listed AWS, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud Provider and region availability were service-dependent and are not confirmed currently

What a development or test deployment looked like

  1. Request access. A team obtained a trial or subscription and prepared candidate VMs or an application for import.
  2. Import or define the application. The VMs and their relationships were brought into Ravello, retaining the intended multi-VM design.
  3. Check the design in the web console. The console let users inspect the application, virtual machines, networking, and storage before starting it.
  4. Validate the environment. Teams could verify that the application booted and that inter-machine communication and test procedures worked as expected.
  5. Publish it. Publishing created the cloud VMs and the networking overlay. The publish dialog showed detailed pricing before deployment.
  6. Repeat or automate it. A validated application could be saved as a blueprint, copied into multiple instances, shared, or managed through Ravello’s REST API.

Oracle’s documented default run duration was two hours. That value was a service setting in the referenced documentation, not a claim about every account or a current limit.

Why this model helped development and testing

Short-lived integration environments

A fixed on-premises lab can become a queue when several teams need the same multi-tier system. Ravello’s copy-and-publish model allowed a team to start an isolated instance for an integration run and remove it afterward, instead of reserving permanent hardware.

Repeatable test cases

Blueprints captured a validated application definition. Testers could create another instance from the same topology, which reduced configuration drift between runs and made it practical to keep known-good environments for regression work.

Demonstrations and training

Sales demonstrations, workshops, and training exercises often need a complete application rather than a single VM. Multiple blueprint-based instances provided a consistent environment without shipping or rebuilding an on-site lab for every session.

Security exercises and migration rehearsals

Teams could use copies of a multi-VM system for controlled security exercises or to rehearse a move before touching a production environment. The platform capability supports these uses, but the available sources do not provide a measured productivity gain, savings percentage, or test-performance benchmark.

Cost, performance, and administrative controls

Two publishing choices

Publishing choice How region selection worked Intended trade-off
Cost optimization Ravello selected a suitable supported region Favor the service’s cost objective over user-directed placement
Performance optimization The user selected the cloud region Favor placement control and expected performance characteristics

The publish dialog provided the detailed price for the selected configuration and run duration. Historical documentation does not establish a current price list, universal savings, or a guaranteed performance difference between the modes.

Usage separation and permissions

Administration documentation described cost buckets for separating development and testing spend, along with role-based permissions for administrators and users. Those controls helped organizations assign ownership and limit who could publish or manage environments, but their current availability should be checked against current Oracle documentation.

Was Ravello a migration tool, a test environment, or a production cloud?

It was a platform with several possible roles, not a single-purpose test appliance.

Role How Ravello fit What the evidence does not establish
Development and testing Strongest documented fit: repeatable, isolated copies of existing VMware/KVM applications No authoritative percentage for faster testing or lower cost
Demonstration and training Blueprints and multiple instances supported repeatable environments for audiences or classes No published adoption or capacity statistic
Migration validation Teams could rehearse a move and test behavior in a public-cloud setting before committing It did not automatically refactor an application into cloud-native services
Lift-and-shift deployment Existing VM-based workloads could be published with their topology preserved Available sources do not define a current production SLA, support lifecycle, or suitability for every workload

Therefore, calling Ravello only a migration utility is too narrow, while calling it a general-purpose modern production platform goes beyond the documented evidence. Its differentiator was running familiar VM environments in public cloud with minimal redesign.

Oracle’s acquisition and what changed afterward

Oracle agreed to acquire Ravello Systems in February 2016 and said Ravello employees would join Oracle’s public-cloud organization. Reuters reported that Ravello had about 60 employees and had raised $54 million at the time; those are historical company figures, not current service metrics. The companies did not disclose the purchase price, while ranges reported by Reuters were attributed to Israeli media.

Oracle later announced Ravello availability on OCI in September 2017. Oracle also published a “Rapid Start” consulting offer intended to introduce the service and help customers upload candidate VMs. The current availability of that consulting offer is unverified.

What to verify before planning a deployment

  • Confirm that the service itself is currently offered; historical Oracle Ravello pages do not prove present availability.
  • Check supported VMware/KVM versions, guest operating systems, storage types, networking features, and import limits in current documentation.
  • Verify the actual cloud providers, regions, quotas, egress charges, and any restrictions on nested virtualization.
  • Request a current price estimate for the complete multi-VM application, including storage and network traffic, rather than pricing one VM in isolation.
  • Test operational requirements such as backups, monitoring, identity integration, patching, recovery, and support response before treating a published environment as production-ready.
