OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Meta offered some OpenAI employees what he called “$100 million signing bonuses,” with annual compensation potentially higher. Meta disputed that description, saying compensation packages were misrepresented, and OpenAI researcher Lucas Beyer said he and two colleagues joining Meta did not receive $100 million sign-on bonuses. The public reporting does not include offer letters or verified terms for individual recruits, so the headline figure remains an attributed and contested claim—not an established market statistic.
What Sam Altman claimed
On the Uncapped podcast published June 17, 2025, Altman said Meta was making unusually large offers to people on OpenAI’s team as it built a new superintelligence group. He described them as “$100 million signing bonuses” and said annual compensation would be higher still. Altman also said that, at the time of the interview, none of OpenAI’s best people had accepted those offers.
That account came from an interested executive. The reporting did not publish offer letters, identify a representative set of recipients, or independently verify whether the quoted amount was cash paid immediately when someone signed.

How Meta responded
Meta did not initially confirm Altman’s characterization. The company later challenged both the amount and the way the packages were described.

Different compensation elements, according to Meta’s CTO
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said the actual terms were not simply a sign-on bonus but included “all these different things.” That wording points to a package potentially combining salary, equity, bonuses, recruiting incentives and performance-related compensation rather than a single $100 million cash payment.
Meta’s spokesperson disputed the description
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said: “These statements are untrue – the size and structure of these compensation packages have been misrepresented all over the place.” Meta’s position contests both the headline number and the implication that recruits were receiving $100 million immediately upon signing.

What a confirmed recruit said
OpenAI researcher Lucas Beyer confirmed that he and two colleagues were joining Meta. In a statement reported by TechCrunch, Beyer wrote: “1) yes, we will be joining Meta. 2) no, we did not get 100M sign-on, that’s fake news.”

This independently confirms that Meta recruited OpenAI researchers, but it does not establish the terms of every other offer. Beyer’s denial applies to his group and does not prove that no candidate was offered a package whose projected value approached the figure Altman cited.

Was the money a cash bonus or total compensation?
The central dispute is partly about terminology. A sign-on bonus normally means a specified payment tied to joining, while total compensation can include several years of salary, stock grants, annual bonuses and performance conditions. The cited reports do not establish the cash, stock, vesting schedules, timing or conditions for particular Meta offers.
| Question | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|
| Who described the offers as “$100 million signing bonuses”? | Sam Altman, speaking on the Uncapped podcast in June 2025. |
| Did Meta accept that description? | No. Meta said the size and structure of packages had been misrepresented. |
| Did a named OpenAI researcher deny receiving one? | Yes. Lucas Beyer said he and two colleagues did not receive $100 million sign-on bonuses. |
| Are individual contracts public? | No. The cited coverage does not provide offer letters or complete compensation agreements. |
| Is $100 million a typical AI-recruiting figure? | No such representative statistic is established by the reports. |
What the later reporting adds
An $18 million offer was reported, but not documented
A June 27 TechCrunch follow-up said a venture investor claimed an unnamed AI researcher had received and declined an $18 million Meta offer. The report did not identify the researcher or publish contract terms, so this is an attributed anecdote—not evidence of a standard offer level.

Meta hired OpenAI researchers
WIRED later reported that Meta had hired at least seven staffers from OpenAI for its superintelligence effort. Those hires show that the recruiting campaign produced results, but they do not verify that any of the recruits received the specific $100 million sign-on figure.
Did OpenAI employees accept Meta’s offers?
Yes, at least some OpenAI researchers joined Meta, including Beyer and two colleagues. However, Altman’s statement that none of OpenAI’s “best people” had accepted described the situation at the time of his podcast appearance. Subsequent hiring reports concern later developments and do not identify the compensation attached to each move.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Meta aggressively recruited experienced AI researchers for a new superintelligence organization.
- Altman characterized some offers as $100 million signing bonuses with annual compensation above that level.
- Meta rejected that characterization and said package size and structure were being misrepresented.
- A named recruit, Lucas Beyer, denied receiving a $100 million sign-on bonus.
- The public record does not settle whether any individual received $100 million in immediate cash, or what the projected value of specific packages was.
The most accurate reading is therefore narrower than the headline: Meta made very large, multimillion-dollar recruiting offers and hired OpenAI researchers, while the claim that it paid $100 million signing bonuses remains disputed and unverified for particular individuals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Meta really offer OpenAI employees $100 million signing bonuses?
Sam Altman said it did, but Meta disputed the description and no cited report publishes verified contracts. The figure should be treated as an attributed, contested claim rather than a confirmed cash bonus.
Did any OpenAI researchers join Meta?
Yes. Lucas Beyer confirmed that he and two colleagues were joining Meta, and WIRED later reported at least seven OpenAI staffers had been hired for Meta’s effort.

The public reporting does not establish that. Meta said packages included different elements, and the exact mix of cash, equity, salary and performance compensation is not public.
