If you expect to print mostly standard PLA and ordinary-sized parts, several premium-sounding features may add convenience without solving a problem you have. They can still be worthwhile when they match your projects or preferred workflow.
Prusa’s manufacturer buying guide recommends standard PLA for absolute beginners and suggests matching the printer’s capabilities to the materials and setup demands you expect. The features below are not universally wasteful; each has a clear case for skipping it and a case for paying for it.
Start with what you plan to print
Before comparing feature lists, write down the materials you expect to use, the largest parts you expect to print, and whether you prefer a hands-on or more automated workflow. Prusa recommends standard PLA for absolute beginners; higher-temperature capability and an enclosure become more relevant when projects call for advanced materials. Its guide is manufacturer advice, not independent comparative testing. Prusa’s 3D printer buying guide
- Materials: Check the printer’s supported materials and requirements rather than assuming a feature guarantees compatibility.
- Part size: Compare the usable build volume with real objects you plan to print. Some large models can be split into sections, though that adds assembly work.
- Setup: Consider assembly, calibration, and maintenance alongside headline specifications.
- Workflow: Pay for remote management, sensors, or monitoring when you expect to use them, not simply because they appear on a spec sheet.
11 features you may not need to pay extra for
1. Very high advertised print speed
Skip the premium if: You are learning, printing occasional parts, or care more about getting a reliable result than finishing as quickly as possible. A headline speed figure alone does not establish the quality you will get on your chosen printer and model.

- Up to 16 Colors: Bring your designs to life with vibrant multi-color/multi-material printing capabilities, perfect for showcasing your creativity. Note: Connecting Bambu Lab AMS is required.
- 500mm/s and 20000 mm/s² Acceleration True High Speed: Don't wait around for your masterpieces. Lightning-fast printing speed lets you focus on creating, not waiting.
- Enclosed Design: Fully enclosed body improves print performance for advanced filaments. Automatic Bed Leveling: Say hello to high-quality, successful prints. Auto bed leveling makes 3D printing such an easy thing.
- Set Up in 15 Minutes: Spend more time printing and less time setting up. User-friendly design ensures a hassle-free assembly experience for all skill levels.
- Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
Pay for it if: Faster throughput matters to your regular workload and you have verified the printer’s performance for the materials and prints you expect. No independent speed-and-quality comparison is established here, so treat advertised speed as a specification to investigate, not proof of a better beginner experience.
2. Oversized build volume
Skip the premium if: Your planned parts fit a smaller printer. A larger build area is useful only when your actual projects need it; it is not automatically better for everyday prints.
Pay for it if: You regularly need to print large objects in one piece. Prusa notes that even large props can be divided into smaller sections, but splitting a model means extra joining work. Prusa’s buying guide
3. Multi-color or multi-material hardware
Skip the premium if: Your designs are single-color and use one material at a time. Extra capability has little practical value if your prints do not call for it.

4. An enclosure or heated chamber
Skip the premium if: You expect to print standard PLA and do not need materials that call for a controlled chamber. An enclosure by itself does not establish that a printer is suitable for every material.
Pay for it if: Your intended materials require higher-temperature capability or an enclosed chamber. Prusa associates these needs with advanced materials, while Elegoo recommends an enclosure for ABS and ASA. Confirm material compatibility and any specific printer requirements before buying. Prusa’s buying guide; Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro
5. A premium touchscreen
Skip the premium if: You are comfortable with simpler controls and will mostly send prints from a computer or removable storage. A more elaborate screen is a usability choice, not evidence by itself of better printed output.

Pay for it if: You expect to control the printer at its display often and prefer a more visual interface. Check what the particular model’s screen lets you do; features differ by printer.
6. Built-in Wi-Fi or cloud workflow
Skip the premium if: Local USB or SD-card printing suits your routine. You do not need remote transfer or management just because the printer can offer it.

Pay for it if: Sending files and managing prints remotely would make your regular workflow easier. Prusa describes remote management as a convenience, not a requirement for printing. Prusa’s buying guide
7. A built-in camera or AI monitoring
Skip the premium if: You do not need to observe prints remotely. Monitoring should not be treated as a promise that failures will be prevented.
Pay for it if: Remote observation is useful for where and how you run the printer. Check whether a camera is included or optional: Creality lists a camera as optional on its Ender-3 V3. Creality Ender-3 V3 specifications
8. A filament runout sensor
Skip the premium if: Your prints are short, you keep an eye on the spool, or the printer you want already includes the sensor. It addresses one interruption—a spool running out—not every cause of a failed print.
Pay for it if: You often run long prints and want the printer to detect an empty spool. Prusa characterizes filament sensors as a quality-of-life feature, so weigh that convenience against your typical printing habits. Prusa’s buying guide

9. Power-loss recovery
Skip the premium if: You are paying extra for it as a guarantee that every interrupted print will resume successfully. Recovery is not a substitute for dependable power, and results can depend on the interruption and printer.

Creality lists power-loss recovery on its Ender-3 V3 specifications, but that feature listing does not establish a universal guarantee. Creality Ender-3 V3 specifications
10. Premium acceleration or vibration sensing
Skip the premium if: You cannot connect the feature to a specific need in your prints. A sensor or higher acceleration specification is not, by itself, proof of a worthwhile improvement for your projects.
Pay for it if: You understand how the feature affects the workflow or results you care about and have verified its value for that model. Independent comparative testing establishing a general beginner benefit is not available here.
11. A proprietary smart ecosystem or automatic material system
Skip the premium if: You want flexibility and have not checked which materials, accessories, software, or supplies the system requires. Do not assume a feature will work across brands or without ongoing conditions.

Calibration is a different kind of upgrade from a larger screen or camera: it can reduce setup friction. Prusa recommends that beginners look for calibration handled by the printer, and its MINI+ specifications describe automatic mesh bed leveling. That convenience does not promise a perfect first layer or eliminate maintenance. Prusa’s buying guide; Original Prusa MINI+ specifications
Compare a printer’s actual calibration process and assembly requirements rather than treating “automatic” as a guarantee of a trouble-free machine. Model configurations and options can change, so check the exact version you intend to buy.
How to decide what deserves your money
- Pick the material first. If standard PLA meets your plans, avoid paying for advanced-material capability you do not expect to use. If you want ABS, ASA, or other demanding materials, verify the printer’s requirements and compatibility.
- Measure your likely projects. Compare their dimensions with usable build volume. Decide whether splitting and joining a large print is acceptable before paying for a larger machine.
- Choose your setup burden. Consider how much assembly and calibration you are comfortable doing. Automatic calibration can reduce friction, but it does not remove all printer care.
- Separate necessities from conveniences. Decide whether remote management, a camera, sensors, recovery, or an advanced interface solves a real problem in your routine.
- Compare exact configurations. Features vary by model and tier. For example, Creality lists direct drive, auto leveling, Wi-Fi, touchscreen, filament runout sensing, and power-loss recovery on its Ender-3 V3, with its camera optional. Check the precise configuration rather than assuming every printer in a product family includes the same items. Creality Ender-3 V3 specifications
