In May 2014, Facebook selected Emerson Network Power to collaborate on a rapid deployment data center (RDDC) design, with its second building in Luleå, Sweden, planned as the first implementation. The concept combined factory-built modules with lean construction techniques to pursue faster builds and lower material use; the announcement did not report measured results.
What Facebook and Emerson planned
Data Center Knowledge reported the collaboration on May 8, 2014. Facebook described the Luleå project as a pilot for applying the RDDC concept at data-center scale. Emerson’s 2014 annual report independently described the collaboration and characterized the design as a scalable approach built from factory-made components and lean construction methods.
Jay Park, then Facebook’s director of data-center design, said the company was looking to accelerate construction and reduce material use, and was excited to pilot the concept in Luleå. Emerson’s Scott Barbour said the companies developed an integrated solution around Facebook’s requirements. How the rapid deployment data center was designed
The central design choice was to prepare specialized infrastructure as factory-built, shippable modules and coordinate it with lean construction on site. The snap-together-furniture analogy can suggest the idea of modular assembly, but the actual scope was enterprise infrastructure—not consumer equipment or a simple prefabricated room.

Emerson’s annual report says the planned facility covered 125,000 square feet and that Emerson delivered over 250 shippable modules. It names power skids, evaporative air handlers, a water treatment plant, data-center superstructure solutions, and controls among the project components. What the design aimed to change
The report said the new design would eliminate the penthouse cooling arrangement used in Facebook’s earlier design. It does not provide measurements comparing the space allocated to cooling, cooling performance, construction duration, or material consumption, so the scale of any change cannot be quantified from the cited accounts.

Emerson’s report framed the approach as one intended to deploy faster and use less material. Neither it nor the announcement supplies a post-project assessment showing how much time or material the Luleå implementation ultimately saved. The historical announcement therefore establishes the design goals and planned pilot, not a verified result or present-day deployment status.

The collaboration was an example of a data-center operator and infrastructure supplier adapting modular construction to a large, custom facility. Factory preparation was intended to move some work away from the construction site, while lean construction techniques were part of the overall approach. The sources describe this strategy but do not provide a measured comparison with conventional on-site construction.

Facebook’s second Luleå building was the announced first implementation. The available accounts do not establish what happened after the plans were announced, whether the approach was adopted elsewhere, or whether it remains available as a current Emerson offering.
