The right choice depends first on which workloads you need to protect, then on whether each service can meet your recovery, retention, geographic-resilience, and cost requirements in your actual configuration. Compare complete backup-and-restore scenarios—not just storage prices or feature names.
How the three services differ
These are provider-managed backup services, but their workload coverage and operating models are not identical. Support can depend on workload type, operating system, region, vault configuration, and restore target. Use the providers’ current documentation to verify that the exact source and recovery path you need are supported.
| Service | Documented scope and operating model | Cost categories identified by the provider |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Backup | Workload-specific protection and features; eligibility and conditions vary by resource type and configuration. Check the live AWS Backup pricing and feature details. | Backup storage, inter-Region transfer, restores, backup evaluations, and—in applicable configurations—restore testing, search, Audit Manager, and malware protection. Rates and exclusions depend on the resource and configuration. AWS Backup pricing |
| Azure Backup | Policy-based protection for Azure and on-premises workloads using supported Recovery Services vaults, Backup vaults, agents, extensions, and workload integrations. Snapshot, vaulted, and operational-plus-vaulted approaches are available for supported resources. Azure Backup overview | Protected-instance and storage costs; redundancy and archive choices affect the estimate. Azure Backup pricing |
| Google Cloud Backup and DR | Centralized, policy-based protection for supported Compute Engine, database, file, VMware, and hybrid workloads. Exact compatibility depends on workload and vault location. Google Cloud Backup and DR overview | Storage and management, with possible transfer and appliance charges. Google Backup and DR pricing |
The table describes the services and billing categories, not a normalized price comparison. Their meters differ, so a claim that one is generally cheapest would require assumptions the providers’ pricing pages do not establish.
Start with workload and restore-path fit
Make a list of every source you need protected: compute instances, databases, files, on-premises systems, and any hybrid workloads. For each one, confirm source support and the restore destination you actually require. A service that protects a workload in one configuration may not support the same operating system, region, consistency option, or destination in another.

- AWS: Check the resource-specific conditions and feature eligibility on the AWS Backup page before estimating or designing policies. AWS Backup pricing
- Azure: Identify whether the workload uses a Recovery Services vault or Backup vault and which agent, extension, or integration it requires. Review the overview and support matrix for the exact scenario. Azure Backup overview · Azure Backup support matrix
- Google Cloud: Check the supported workload and vault-location combination; the product overview and vault documentation describe scope and compatibility. Google Cloud Backup and DR overview · Google backup vaults
Include account, project, subscription, and region boundaries in this check. Also verify restore granularity—what can be recovered, and where—rather than assuming backup support automatically proves the recovery path you need.
Compare geographic resilience without treating labels as equivalents
Local, zone-redundant, geo-redundant, multi-region, and explicitly cross-region protection describe different placement and recovery choices. They are not interchangeable promises. Match the design to the outage scenarios you must survive and any data-residency rules you must follow.
Azure Cross Region Restore
Cross Region Restore (CRR) has workload and vault conditions. Microsoft’s support matrix says that for Recovery Services vaults, CRR requires geo-redundant storage (GRS), with support varying by workload and region. Check the matrix for the specific combination rather than assuming that enabling GRS alone guarantees the desired recovery option. Azure Backup support matrix

Google Cloud vault locations
Google distinguishes regional, multi-region, and cross-region vault locations. The workload’s compatibility and the cost implications can differ between automated multi-region placement and an explicitly selected cross-region target. Confirm that the intended workload works with the selected vault location. Google backup vaults

AWS cross-Region transfer
AWS lists data transferred between Regions as a separate pricing category. Include it when protection or recovery crosses Regions; do not compare a cross-Region design with a local-only estimate as though they were equivalent. AWS Backup pricing
Check retention, immutability, and administrative consequences
Retention determines how long recovery points remain available. Immutability controls can make it harder for an administrator or attacker to alter or delete protected data, but they also constrain routine policy changes and deletion. Evaluate the operational consequences before enforcing a control.

Azure immutable vaults
Azure documents vault immutability that can be enabled and then locked; once locked, the setting cannot be disabled. Confirm that the relevant vault and workload support the control and that the retention and deletion consequences suit your operations. Azure immutable vault
Google enforced retention
Google documents enforced retention at the backup-vault level: protected data cannot be deleted until the configured retention period elapses. Check the applicable vault and backup-plan behavior, and make sure the retention period reflects both compliance obligations and recovery needs. Google backup plans

Estimate total cost for the same backup and recovery scenario
Storage is only one part of backup cost. Build an estimate for each service using identical assumptions so that different billing meters do not create a misleading comparison.
- Workload type and the amount of data protected.
- Expected change rate and backup frequency.
- Retention period, storage tier, and archive choices.
- Vault location, redundancy, and cross-region transfer.
- Expected restore volume and frequency of recovery tests.
- Management, evaluation, search, appliance, or other charges that apply to the selected configuration.
AWS identifies storage, transfer, restore, evaluation, testing, and other feature-specific charges; the applicable items depend on resources and configuration. Backup success is not the same as a successful recovery. The provider materials describe backup and restore options and associated costs, but they do not provide a common independent performance test or comparable recovery-time objective (RTO) or recovery-point objective (RPO) guarantee across all three services.

A practical decision framework
- Favor the service that fits your existing cloud and workload mix when its documented coverage includes every required source and restore target.
- Prioritize geographic recovery requirements if a regional outage is a central risk; check the precise vault, workload, and location conditions rather than comparing labels alone.
- Choose retention controls deliberately by weighing protection against deletion or tampering against the operational limits imposed by enforced retention or a locked immutable setting.
- Compare lifecycle estimates using matched data volume, change rate, retention, location, restore volume, and test frequency.
- Require a successful recovery drill before treating any service as meeting your recovery objectives.
For a business already operating mainly in one provider’s environment, that provider’s native service may be the simplest starting point—but only if the precise workload coverage, recovery design, controls, and full costs meet requirements. For mixed or hybrid environments, compare supported workloads and operating effort rather than assuming a single console or provider label means every source is covered.
