To use Reader Mode in Chrome, open a text-heavy page and choose Open in reading mode from the right-click menu, select the Reading mode icon in the address bar if it appears, or go to More > More tools > Reading mode. On Android, tap More beside the address bar and choose Show reading mode. Google calls the feature “Reading mode”; it does not work on every page.
Use Reading mode on a computer
- Open Chrome and go to the page you want to read.
- Open Reading mode using any available route: right-click the page and select Open in reading mode; select the Reading mode icon in the address bar if it appears; or choose More > More tools > Reading mode.
- Alternatively, use Chrome’s documented keyboard shortcut: ⌘ + Option + r on macOS, or Alt + Shift + r on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS.
Depending on your view preference, Reading mode opens full screen or in a side panel. To change the view, open Reading mode Settings, choose View, then select Side panel or Full screen. Chrome saves the view preference. Google’s Reading mode instructions cover the desktop controls.
Adjust the reading view
Use the font-size control for larger or smaller text. Open Settings to change the font style, color theme, line height, and letter spacing, or to show or hide links and images. These changes apply to the reading view, not the original webpage or other Chrome content. See Google’s side-panel guidance for details about the panel and pinning.
Pin Reading mode for quicker access
Use the Reading mode setting or the side-panel pin control to pin it. The pinned toolbar icon gives you another way to open the feature.

Listen to a page with Read aloud
In computer Reading mode, select Play to start listening. You can pause playback, move to the previous or next sentence, change playback speed, select a voice, and choose text highlighting in Settings. Google says natural voices for the current language download automatically; if that does not work, Chrome uses the system voice. These read-aloud controls are documented for the computer version.
Use Reading mode on Android
- Open Chrome and navigate to the page.
- Tap More beside the address bar, then tap Show reading mode.
- Pull up the reading-mode sheet to reveal its controls.
On Android, the documented options are Sans Serif, Serif, or Mono fonts; font-size adjustment; and Light, Sepia, or Dark backgrounds. If Chrome says Reading mode is unavailable, the page is unsupported. See Google’s Android instructions.

When Reading mode is unavailable or misses content
Google says Reading mode is not available on all websites. Video and forum sites are examples of formats that may be incompatible; image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens may also fail to work as expected.
- The option or text is missing on a computer: update Chrome. If the content still does not appear, highlight the relevant text on the original page to trigger Reading mode.
- The page will not convert: try a simpler text-based page. Some page types are unsupported or may not display correctly.
- The keyboard shortcut opens another feature: voice-control or other apps may use the same shortcut. Change the shortcut in the conflicting app if the issue recurs.
- Formatting changes do not affect the website: this is expected. Reading mode settings only change the text shown in the reading view.
Google’s instructions do not state a Chrome version requirement, and the available controls differ by platform: desktop help documents read-aloud, voice, spacing, link, and image options, while Android help documents font, size, and background choices.
