No. Durabook’s R8-EX and U11-EX are rugged Windows 11 Pro tablets certified for defined ATEX Zone 2/22 use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The certification addresses the tablet as a possible ignition source; it does not prevent a gas release, dust cloud, process failure, or explosion at a facility. Whether a particular tablet configuration is suitable for a worksite must be checked against that site’s hazards and operating requirements.
What ATEX Zone 2/22 certification means for these tablets
Durabook identifies both models as ATEX-certified for Zone 2/22 applications and lists the protection markings Ex II 3G Ex ic IIC T4 Gc and Ex II 3D Ex ic IIIB T135°C Dc. These are the manufacturer’s stated markings for the devices; they are not a blanket approval for every hazardous location or every way of using the tablets.

The practical question is whether the complete device configuration is certified and appropriate for the site’s zone, gas or dust group, temperature requirements, accessories, and operating procedures. Durabook’s product information establishes the models’ stated certification, but a site hazard assessment and the applicable workplace rules determine whether and how a tablet may be used there.

R8-EX vs. U11-EX: the practical differences
The main choice is between the R8-EX’s lighter, smaller form and the U11-EX’s larger, higher-resolution display. The figures below are Durabook-listed product specifications; battery life is stated as an “up to” claim for the optional high-capacity battery.
| Specification | Durabook R8-EX | Durabook U11-EX |
|---|---|---|

Choose the R8-EX for a smaller carry
At the manufacturer-listed 0.88 kg, the R8-EX is the lighter option for work where carrying the tablet matters more than having a large workspace. Its 8-inch display is smaller, but Durabook lists brightness up to 800 nits. The optional high-capacity battery is rated for up to 17 hours; the figure is not a guarantee of runtime in every application or operating condition.
Choose the U11-EX for more screen space
The U11-EX weighs 1.49 kg and has an 11.6-inch, 1920 × 1080 display. It is the more workspace-oriented choice for viewing or entering information on a larger screen. An optional DynaVue display is listed at 1000 nits, and the optional high-capacity battery is rated for up to 20 hours. Confirm the specific display and battery options on the configuration being quoted.
Check the configuration, not just the model name
Both models offer Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and Thunderbolt 4, but Durabook says exact ports and memory/storage options differ by configuration. Compare the configurations against the peripherals, data needs, cellular or GPS requirements, and expansion plan for the job. The supplied product specifications do not establish that every configuration includes cellular connectivity or GPS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are they safer than a standard Windows tablet in a plant?
They have a key safety distinction: Durabook lists ATEX Zone 2/22 certification for the R8-EX and U11-EX. A standard Windows tablet without the required hazardous-area certification should not be treated as interchangeable in a location where that certification is required. That does not make either Durabook model universally safe for every oil, chemical, or pharmaceutical facility; suitability depends on the site’s classification and the certified configuration and procedures.
The tablets also carry IP66, MIL-STD-810H, and six-foot drop claims. Those are separate ruggedness specifications, not substitutes for hazardous-area certification. Nor do they indicate that the tablet can protect a worker from an explosion or make the surrounding equipment and process safe.
Can you use a charger, dock, or other accessory?
Do not assume that a generic charger, dock, cable, battery, or peripheral is permitted in a hazardous area just because it connects to an R8-EX or U11-EX. The relevant question is whether that exact accessory and the way it is used are allowed by the device’s certification, manufacturer instructions, and the site’s procedures.
- Confirm the exact tablet configuration and its certification documentation with Durabook or the authorized supplier.
- Ask the site safety or compliance lead to verify that the device and any accessories are suitable for the classified area.
- Follow site rules for charging, battery changes, connection of peripherals, and movement between hazardous and non-hazardous areas.
The product information cited here does not establish that arbitrary accessories or charging arrangements preserve ATEX suitability. Get explicit confirmation before bringing an accessory into a classified area.
Quick Recap
How to choose between them
- Prioritize portability: consider the 8-inch R8-EX and its lower listed weight.
- Prioritize a larger display: consider the 11.6-inch U11-EX, especially if the work benefits from its 1920 × 1080 resolution.
- Plan for a full shift: compare the optional high-capacity battery claims with expected workload and confirm the configuration; “up to” is not a guaranteed runtime.
- Plan around accessories and connectivity: check the exact ports and options, then obtain site and manufacturer confirmation for any equipment intended for hazardous-area use.
- Verify site fit: match the device markings and certified configuration to the site’s zone, gas or dust group, temperature requirements, and procedures before deployment.
