As of September 27, 2026, Google’s Chromebook Help still lists “Cameras aren’t yet supported” under the unsupported features for the Linux development environment (Crostini). Google documents Linux microphone access separately, but it has published no camera-support announcement or rollout date.
What Google officially supports today
Google’s “Set up Linux on your Chromebook” guidance explicitly places the statement “Cameras aren’t yet supported” in its list of limitations. That is the clearest current answer for anyone trying to use a Chromebook webcam from a Linux application.
The Linux environment is designed for command-line and graphical Linux developer applications. It runs in a security-isolated environment—described in Google’s Crostini documentation as a virtual machine—rather than as ordinary ChromeOS processes. Hardware access therefore depends on specific platform support; a camera that works in ChromeOS is not automatically visible inside Linux.
Why microphone access does not mean camera access
Microphone capture and camera capture are separate capabilities. Google’s setup instructions include a setting to allow Linux applications to use the microphone, while cameras remain in the unsupported list.

Google’s Crostini FAQ says, “This is now supported in the ChromeOS M84 release,” in response to its historical question about audio capture (for example, a microphone). That release note documents microphone support; it does not announce webcam support or imply that camera access arrived later.
Will USB sharing or an external webcam work?
Google says some USB devices can be shared with Linux on a case-by-case basis. However, its FAQ and setup documentation do not identify webcams as a supported Linux camera path. Selecting a USB device in ChromeOS is therefore not a documented camera-passthrough method.

| Approach | What the documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Chromebook camera | Usable by supported ChromeOS applications when camera access is enabled. | Availability inside Crostini Linux applications. |
| External USB webcam | ChromeOS webcam specifications cover compatible native ChromeOS use; supported devices should use USB 2.0 or later and UVC 1.0 or later. | Passthrough to a Linux container or VM. |
| USB sharing | Some USB peripherals may be shared with Linux individually. | A supported webcam device class or guaranteed video capture. |
| Adapters and cables | They can connect hardware to the Chromebook. | They cannot add an undocumented Crostini camera interface. |
The webcam specification (version 1.3.1, updated February 1, 2024) discusses normal video-conferencing scenarios, Google Meet and the ChromeOS Camera app. It does not claim that a ChromeOS-compatible camera can be passed through to Crostini.
What ChromeOS privacy settings can—and cannot—do
ChromeOS has a device-wide camera control and per-application permissions. The global switch can block camera access at all levels and services; permissions can also be managed for Chrome and web applications and for Android apps.

Those controls govern the ChromeOS host and its supported app environments. Enabling the camera there does not create a Linux camera device. If the camera works in Chrome or an Android app but not in a Linux program, that behavior is consistent with Google’s documented support boundary.

No public camera rollout date is documented. Google’s Crostini FAQ says, “We are not currently publishing any information beyond this document,” in its general discussion of device support, and says it has no device-support roadmaps to share. The official pages reviewed contain no camera-specific commitment, target ChromeOS milestone or beta schedule.

Consequently, claims that camera support is “coming soon,” tied to a particular Chromebook model or promised for a specific ChromeOS release are not supported by Google’s published information.
What to check when a camera works in ChromeOS but not Linux
- Confirm the host camera setting. In ChromeOS settings, make sure global camera access is enabled.
- Check the host app’s permission. For Chrome/web or Android apps, verify that the relevant application is allowed to use the camera.
- Test a native ChromeOS app. This separates a hardware or host-permission problem from the Linux limitation.
- Do not treat Linux troubleshooting as a camera fix. Restarting the Linux environment or updating packages may resolve unrelated Linux issues, but Google does not state that these steps enable cameras.
- Assume Linux incompatibility unless Google changes the documentation. A missing camera in a Linux application is expected under the current support status, not evidence that a particular webcam, adapter or cable is faulty.
Practical alternatives
Use ChromeOS-native software
For video calls, recording and browser-based camera work, use Chrome, a supported web app or an Android application with the appropriate ChromeOS permission.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Run the workload outside Crostini
If a Linux-only application requires video capture, use a separate computer or an environment where the operating system officially supports the camera. Installing additional Linux camera software inside Crostini cannot overcome a missing host passthrough capability.
Watch Google’s support documentation
The authoritative signal will be a change to Google’s Linux support list or a specific ChromeOS announcement. Until then, buying a different webcam or USB adapter is not a documented solution for Crostini access.
