ICQ stopped working as an online messaging service on June 26, 2024. If you are opening an archived ICQ installation, old banner-removal advice may still help with its local interface, but the right approach depends on the client version. If you mean unwanted advertising messages rather than a graphic inside the client, use the privacy controls described below instead.
VK announced the shutdown and suggested VK Messenger and VK WorkSpace as alternatives; those services are not a continuation of ICQ and may differ in availability and suitability. TASS reported the announcement, and reported that ICQ ceased operating on June 26, 2024.
First identify what kind of “banner” you mean
| What you see | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| A graphic or advertising panel inside the chat window or main client | A client-interface element associated with a particular old ICQ edition | Identify the version, then consider a backed-up skin restoration or the version-specific historical method below. |
| Text or a URL sent by an unknown user | Unsolicited messages or spam | Use the client’s privacy and communication filters; a banner-removal tool will not stop these messages. |
| An advertisement on an ICQ web page | A browser-page advertisement | Desktop-client file changes do not address it. |
| Pop-ups appearing outside ICQ | Possibly unrelated software or adware | Do not assume ICQ is responsible; investigate the program producing the pop-up. |
Menu names and files varied between ICQ editions. Check the client’s About dialog, executable name, preserved installer, or installation folder before changing anything. Do not create or delete files just because a name resembles one in an old guide.

Before changing an archived installation
Treat old ICQ software and third-party utilities as untrusted. For a retro-computing installation, make a full copy of the installation and user data first; preserve message histories, configuration, skins, and any backup files. The archived ICQ tools page lists historical locations such as %appdata%ICQLiteHistoryDB for ICQ Lite 5 and %appdata%ICQ for ICQ 6, but verify the paths for your specific installation. The archived version-specific guidance is available here.
- Prefer a virtual machine or spare offline computer, and keep a snapshot you can restore.
- Do not enter a current password into abandoned software or expose an outdated operating system directly to the internet.
- Do not run an abandoned banner-removal executable unless you can independently establish its provenance and safety. The historical guidance does not establish that a copy is safe, available, or compatible with every build.
Historical approaches by ICQ version
| Client or problem | Historical approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ICQ 6 | A third-party guide described using ICQ Banner Remover; it says selecting “Standard” in the tool’s settings restores the original appearance. | Not an official current procedure. The utility’s safety, availability, and compatibility with a particular build are not established. |
| ICQ Lite 5 | Restore modified .skn files from corresponding .bak files in the Skin folder; where available and relevant, restore ICQLite.exe from ICQLite.exe.bak. |
Version-specific recovery, not a universal banner fix. The archived instructions note that executable restoration can depend on how many times a remover was run. |
| Older ICQ clients | A 2004 magazine tip said deleting ICQHttp.dll could remove flashing banners. |
Old, version-specific advice that may break unrelated client functions; do not treat it as a safe first step. |
| Unsolicited advertising messages | Historical FAQs recommended privacy settings such as limiting URL messages to contacts and filtering message types or words. | These measures address incoming messages, not a graphical banner embedded in the client. |
The ICQ 6 and ICQ Lite 5 details come from an archived third-party ICQ tools page. The DLL tip appears in a 2004 issue of Digit magazine.
#1 Best Overall
ICQ 6: the archived Banner Remover method
The archived third-party guide describes a Banner Remover for ICQ 6 and a “Standard” setting to reverse its change. This is documentation of a historical method, not a recommendation to download or run an abandoned executable.
- Close ICQ completely and make a full backup of its installation and user data.
- Confirm that the client is the ICQ 6 build the utility was intended for. Do not apply it to another edition based on a similar-looking interface.
- If you already have a copy from a source you can independently trust, assess it before execution and avoid granting unnecessary administrator privileges.
- After any change, reopen the archived client locally and check the interface. To reverse the documented change, the guide says to select “Standard” in the utility’s settings.
The source does not establish that the utility is currently safe, still available, or compatible with every ICQ 6 release. If you cannot verify the copy, skip this method.
ICQ Lite 5: restore original files only when backups match
The archived ICQ Lite 5 instructions describe restoring skin and executable backups. This is a recovery procedure for a modified installation, not a general-purpose way to remove a banner.
- Exit ICQ Lite and copy the entire installation directory and user data to a safe location.
- Open the installation’s
Skinfolder. For a modified.sknfile, use its corresponding.bakonly if you can confirm that the backup belongs to the same installation and version. - Where the archived instructions apply and a matching backup exists, restore
ICQLite.exefromICQLite.exe.bak. Do not mix files from different builds. - Restart the client and check whether it opens normally. If it becomes unstable, restore the complete installation from your backup rather than replacing more files one by one.
If you have no reliable backup, preserve the original untouched and install the same archived build into a separate directory for experimentation. Reinstallation behavior varies, so back up local data before attempting it.
Why the old ICQHttp.dll tip is risky
A 2004 Digit magazine tip suggested deleting ICQHttp.dll to remove flashing banners and warned against deleting a similarly named file printed as ICQHttp .dll, with a space. This is not current official advice, and the source does not establish which later or earlier builds it applies to. Removing a DLL can interfere with startup, embedded content, updates, or other functions. Do not use this as the first option; if documenting it for an archival experiment, work from a complete backup in an isolated environment.
For spam messages, use privacy controls instead
Historical ICQ FAQs recommended communication and privacy filters for unsolicited messages. In versions with the described menus, the path was Main → Security and privacy permissions → Communications Events; set the Web Page Address (URL) permission to Only Users on My Contact List. Older versions used a different path: ICQ → Security and Privacy → Ignore, then Do not accept WWPager messages. Menu labels vary by edition. The historical FAQ also describes Web Aware and Word List controls.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Disabling Web Aware was among the FAQ’s suggested measures for reducing unsolicited contact.
- A Word List could filter common spam terms, but the FAQ cautioned that it had bugs in some versions, particularly ICQ 2001.
- The FAQ also suggested removing unnecessary profile details, including spoken-language information, as a way to reduce some spam; that is an old anecdotal claim, not a reliable guarantee.
These settings can reduce unwanted contact in a preserved client, but they do not necessarily remove an advertising panel from its interface.

If a change fails
The files are missing
You may have a different ICQ edition, a non-default installation directory, an already modified installation, or hidden file extensions. The content may also be rendered remotely, or you may be looking at a web page or another messenger. Identify the exact version before proceeding.
Restoring a backup does not work
The backup may have been overwritten, may belong to another build, or may not match the executable and skin files. Close the client and restore the whole installation from a known-good copy. If none exists, keep the original installation intact and experiment with a separate copy of the same archived build.

Deleting a DLL causes a crash
Restore it from the Recycle Bin or your own backup, or restore the complete installation. Do not download a replacement from a random DLL-fixer site; a crash is a sign that the change may not suit that build.

Advertisements continue after the banner is gone
A client-interface banner, a server-delivered promotional message, spam from an unknown account, a web-page ad, and pop-ups caused by unrelated software are different problems. A local banner modification cannot solve all of them, and ICQ’s former messaging service is no longer operating.
What can you do with ICQ today?
There is no current online ICQ setting or server-side fix for banners: the service ceased operating on June 26, 2024. For an archived client, local cosmetic changes may still be meaningful when it is opened offline, but they will not restore messaging. If you need an active messaging service, choose a current service separately based on your location, privacy needs, and the people you need to reach; the alternatives named in VK’s 2024 notice are not equivalent continuations of ICQ.
