The change, announced on January 11, 2024, affected that shortcut—not every way to open an assistant. Depending on your phone and setup, you can still use “Hey Google,” a power-button or corner-swipe gesture, or an assistant app. Today, that assistant may be Gemini rather than classic Google Assistant.
What happened to the Google Assistant voice shortcut?
The microphone icon inside the Google Search bar—including the bar on Pixel home screens—used to provide a way to speak Assistant commands. Google announced that the control would instead launch Voice Search, sending your spoken words to Search. It would no longer be the usual route for actions such as turning on lights or sending a message. Google said voice search was the microphone’s most popular use. Google’s January 2024 announcement describes the change; contemporaneous Pixel reporting observed the changed behavior on a Pixel 8 Pro.
So if tapping the Search-bar microphone opens a search interface instead of listening for an instruction to control your home or send a text, that is the expected function of the shortcut—not proof that the phone has lost every assistant feature.
Voice Search and an assistant do different jobs
The quickest way to identify the right control is to ask whether you want information from Search or an action carried out on your device.

The Search microphone is still useful for speaking a query. It simply is not the same entry point as the assistant’s listening interface.
Ways to open an assistant on Android
Which options appear depends on your phone, Android version, navigation mode, settings, and whether Google Assistant or Gemini is configured. Google’s Android guidance for accessing Gemini lists touch methods on supported devices.
Say “Hey Google”
If hands-free activation and Voice Match are available and enabled, say “Hey Google.” The request may go to Gemini or Google Assistant, depending on your device and current setup. Google notes that this feature has language and account limitations, including restrictions for some supervised accounts. See Google’s Gemini feature and availability guidance.

Hold the power button
On some Android phones, holding the power button opens the configured assistant. Depending on the model and settings, the button may instead show the power menu or open another assistant. If it does not launch the tool you expect, look in your phone’s system settings for the power-button or assistant gesture assignment; the exact label and location vary by manufacturer.

Some phones using gesture navigation let you swipe diagonally upward from a bottom corner to launch the assistant. The gesture can be unavailable, disabled, or handled differently by a manufacturer. Google documents the option in its Assistant gesture guidance.
Use Home or an assistant app
Older navigation setups may support holding the Home button. You may also have a Google Assistant or Gemini app icon, depending on the device and installed software. Google listed the Assistant app and supported Home- or power-button presses as alternatives to the Search-bar microphone in its 2024 announcement.

The shortcut change and the Gemini transition are separate events
The Search-bar microphone change was announced in January 2024. It did not mean Google Assistant had been shut down across Android. Google announced a broader mobile transition on March 14, 2025: it was upgrading more mobile users to Gemini and said classic Assistant would later stop being accessible on most mobile devices. The transition is subject to device, account, language, and rollout limits; it should not be read as a claim that every phone changed at once or that Assistant disappeared from every device category. Google’s Android documentation describes Gemini access methods for supported phones, while Assistant availability on other product categories can differ. A Search-bar shortcut, a phone’s configured mobile assistant, and the assistant on a speaker, car, watch, or other device are not interchangeable controls. What to do if Gemini cannot perform an old Assistant command
Gemini is not guaranteed to reproduce every classic Assistant feature in the same way. Google says some familiar quick voice actions may still be powered by Assistant and some Assistant features may not yet be supported directly in Gemini. If a command that used to work no longer does, try these options:

- Try the command through “Hey Google” or the configured assistant rather than the Search-bar microphone.
- Open Gemini and check whether the relevant app or extension is available for the task.
- If your device still offers Google Assistant, try selecting or opening it for the command. The ability to switch back is not universal.
- Use the underlying app directly—for example, Clock for a timer, Messages for a text, or Google Home for smart-home controls.
Google’s Gemini help page explains that some Assistant features may be unavailable or may continue to rely on Assistant behind the scenes.

The Search microphone opens Search
That is its intended role after the shortcut change. Use one of the assistant activation methods above when you want a device action.
“Hey Google” does nothing
- Check whether “Hey Google” and Voice Match are enabled for the assistant you are using.
- Confirm which assistant is configured: Gemini or Google Assistant.
- Check whether your account type and selected language support the feature; Google documents limits for some languages and supervised accounts.
- Check network access and update the Google or Gemini app if an update is available.
- On some phones, battery-saving settings or manufacturer-specific background restrictions can affect hands-free listening. These are device-dependent possibilities, not a universal explanation.
The power button opens the power menu or another tool
The button’s behavior depends on the phone’s assignment and manufacturer. Check system settings for the power-button gesture or default assistant setting; if no assistant action is offered, your model may not support it.

The corner swipe does not launch an assistant
Check whether gesture navigation is enabled and whether the assistant gesture is available on your model. Three-button navigation, a disabled gesture, or a manufacturer-specific navigation setup can change or prevent the swipe behavior. Google’s Android activation guidance treats these methods as device-dependent.
What this means for your phone
The Search-bar microphone is a voice-search control, not a reliable shortcut for Assistant actions. To make a request that changes something on the phone or in a connected service, use the assistant configured on your device—through “Hey Google,” a supported gesture, or its app—and check its feature support if a familiar command no longer works.
