Build a WordPress loyalty program by choosing one customer behavior to improve, selecting a plugin that can detect that behavior, and publishing clear earning, redemption, eligibility and refund rules before launch. GamiPress suits sites that reward participation, while myCred and its WooCommerce integrations suit stores that need purchase-based points. These tools provide mechanics, not a guaranteed increase in retention or sales, so measure your own results.
1. Choose the behavior your program should change
Start with a business objective rather than a points balance. A store may want more completed orders, first-time purchases, reviews, referrals or repeat orders. A membership, community or course site may want sign-ups, logins, useful comments, course completion or sustained participation.
Use only events that represent meaningful customer value and that you can explain in one sentence. Rewarding trivial activity can inflate balances without improving the customer relationship.
Useful store behaviors
- Completing an order, with rewards issued at the status your policy defines.
- Placing a first order.
- Reaching a specified order value or number of orders.
- Submitting a verified review or referral.
Useful non-store behaviors
- Creating an account, returning for a daily visit or logging in.
- Publishing content, commenting or reviewing.
- Completing a lesson or course milestone.
- Participating in a community or referring another user.
2. Select the WordPress implementation path
Compare trigger coverage, reward types, dependencies, customer-facing displays and transaction controls before installing anything. Confirm current versions, costs and compatibility in the relevant plugin listings because those details can change.

The WooCommerce extension is therefore a dependent add-on, not a standalone loyalty engine. A simple site may need only one plugin; a store using that extension must maintain WooCommerce, myCred and the extension together.
3. Design earning and redemption rules before configuring
Write the policy first, then reproduce it in plugin settings. Give the points a clear name and document every event that earns them.

Define earning
- State whether an order earns points at payment, completion or another status.
- Specify the first-order bonus, if any.
- Define whether points vary by order value, order count or product category.
- Set daily, order-level or customer-level caps where needed.
- List eligibility rules, excluded products, guest-account requirements and any expiration date.
Define redemption
- State the conversion value instead of assuming customers will infer it.
- Explain whether points become discounts, store credit, access or another supported benefit.
- Set minimum balances, maximum discount amounts and stacking restrictions.
- Explain whether coupons or other promotions can be combined with a points redemption.
There is no universally correct points-to-currency ratio in the documented product material. Set a value your margins can support and review the cost of outstanding points as a liability.
4. Build refund, cancellation and abuse controls into the policy
A reward should not remain valid after the transaction that generated it is reversed unless that is an intentional policy. WooCommerce’s points documentation describes deducting redeemed points at checkout and reversing relevant earned or redeemed points when orders are canceled or refunded. Check the actual status rules in your configuration.

Controls to specify
- When points are granted and when they become spendable.
- What happens after a full refund, partial refund, cancellation or chargeback.
- Whether a reversed balance can become negative or whether future earnings are withheld.
- Which referrals, reviews or community actions require verification.
- How duplicate accounts, self-referrals and suspected abuse are handled.
Test these cases with accounts that are not real customers before launch. Do not reward an event that is easy to reverse or fabricate without a corresponding correction rule.
5. Configure a small first release
- Install the chosen plugin and every required dependency in a staging site or controlled test environment.
- Enable only the integrations needed for the selected behavior.
- Create one or two earning events, such as a completed order and a first-order bonus.
- Configure a modest initial reward and the redemption limits in your written policy.
- Add the customer-facing balance, progress or activity display.
- Run test accounts through earning, redemption, cancellation, partial refund and full refund scenarios.
- Check emails, account pages, checkout totals and administrator transaction records.
- Publish the rules, then open the program to a limited audience before expanding it.

6. Explain the program where customers make decisions
Place a short rules summary on the account page, checkout or loyalty page and link to the full policy. Show the current balance, recent earning events, available rewards and progress toward the next rank or achievement. Use plain labels rather than internal trigger names.
Tell customers about exclusions, limits, expiration, stacking and refund treatment before they redeem. If the program changes, show the effective date and preserve records needed to resolve existing balances.

7. Measure participation without promising an outcome
Plugin dashboards can show issuance and transactions, but product claims do not establish that gamification increases loyalty. Track your own baseline or comparison group where practical.
- Eligible customers who enroll and return to the loyalty area.
- Points issued, redeemed and left outstanding.
- Repeat-order rate and time between orders.
- Referral use, verified reviews or course-completion rates.
- Support contacts, refund-related adjustments and suspected abuse.
- Margin after the cost of redeemed rewards.
Review cohorts rather than only total points. If customers earn but do not redeem, the reward may be unclear or unreachable. If redemption is high but repeat purchasing is unchanged, reduce complexity and reassess the behavior being rewarded.

Use the extension only when its WooCommerce-specific features—such as coupons linked to ranks or badges, checkout payment with points or referrals—justify maintaining both WooCommerce and myCred.
