Use the browser context that contains the ad. A banner or overlay is a DOM element, an ad that opens a new tab is a separate window handle, and a JavaScript dialog is a native alert. Selenium has no universal “block all ads” switch, so reliable C# automation waits for the actual behavior, switches context when necessary, and interacts with the page’s controls.
Identify what “the ad” is
Before writing a selector, determine where the unwanted content exists and what your test should prove. The same click can produce very different browser states.

The distinction matters for portability and test fidelity. Removing a node with JavaScript can hide layout problems, while changing browser capabilities can make a test unlike a real visitor’s session.
Set up Selenium for C#
Install Selenium WebDriver and the browser-specific driver package that matches your project and installed browser. The exact APIs can vary by Selenium .NET version; use the installed version’s .NET API documentation when upgrading.

Handle a page banner or modal overlay
Use an explicit wait for visibility or clickability. Do not use a fixed, long sleep: document-ready can occur before JavaScript-driven advertising, consent, or lazy content has settled. Selenium’s browser-options guidance and interaction documentation describe this timing distinction.

A script such as arguments[0].remove() changes the page under test and can conceal overflow, focus, and stacking problems. Prefer a close button, consent action, or a server-side test fixture. If your purpose is specifically to verify the page after removal, make that manipulation an explicit test step and document it.

JavaScript execution and element searches apply to the selected frame or window. Always switch back to the top-level document before continuing with selectors from the main page. If the frame is cross-origin, you can still use WebDriver’s frame context when the frame is exposed, but you cannot treat its DOM as the parent document’s DOM.

Handle an ad that opens a new tab or window
Selenium represents tabs and windows with opaque handles; never assume the new context is at index 1 or that a particular ad-network URL will load. The official windows and tabs guide demonstrates saving CurrentWindowHandle and switching by handle.

Handle native JavaScript dialogs
An alert is not a DOM element. Searching for its text with FindElement will not work. Switch to the alert and then read, accept, or dismiss it. Confirm the exact interface against the Selenium .NET version installed in your project.

Configure a browser option for a narrowly defined popup behavior, and verify it against the installed browser and driver pair. Popup blocking and ad blocking are not synonyms. Disabling popup blocking may allow a window to open; it does not remove display ads, trackers, overlays, or injected page content. ChromeDriver’s capabilities and ChromeOptions page includes popup-related capabilities, but older flags should not be treated as universal current advice.

Use targeted waits instead of sleeps
Choose a condition that expresses the next action:
ElementIsVisiblewhen the element must be displayed.ElementToBeClickablewhen it must be displayed and enabled.FrameToBeAvailableAndSwitchToItbefore searching inside an iframe.- A custom condition when you need a new window handle, a disappearing overlay, or a particular attribute value.
Set a realistic timeout for the environment and capture diagnostics on timeout: current URL, page title, handle count, and a screenshot. A longer timeout cannot fix a selector that never matches.
WebDriver BiDi and request observation
Selenium describes WebDriver BiDi as a bidirectional protocol that can stream events such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. It is promising for instrumentation, but the available documentation does not establish a ready-to-copy, browser-independent C# implementation that blocks advertising requests. Do not claim BiDi is a universal ad filter. Use it only with a version-specific API and a verified implementation.

Design choices for reliable tests
- Test the right outcome: If the requirement is “the consent banner can be closed,” assert that it disappears and that focus returns correctly. If the requirement is “an advertising click must not leave the checkout,” assert the original handle and URL after handling the new context.
- Prefer stable contracts: Ask developers for
data-testidor accessibility selectors. Obfuscated ad-network classes are brittle. - Preserve fidelity: Use a fixture or server-side configuration when ads are irrelevant to the scenario. Removing production nodes in every test can mask real rendering defects.
- Make cleanup deterministic: Close only the unwanted handle, switch back to the saved original, and call
DefaultContent()after frame work. - Record evidence: On failure, save a screenshot, HTML source, console output, current URL, and window-handle list. This distinguishes a missing ad from a broken wait.

Can Selenium permanently remove ads from every site?
No. Selenium automates the browser; it does not provide a universal advertising filter. Handle the specific DOM, frame, window, or dialog behavior your workflow encounters.

Only when the test defines it as unwanted. If the new context is the expected destination, validate it and continue there; otherwise close it and restore the saved original handle.
Is a JavaScript click equivalent to a user click?
Not necessarily. It can bypass hit-testing, focus, and overlay behavior. Use the normal WebDriver click when those browser interactions are part of what you need to verify.
The Bottom Line
Classify the ad first, then wait and switch context deliberately: DOM element, iframe, window handle, or native alert. Keep browser options narrowly scoped, avoid arbitrary sleeps, and treat BiDi as instrumentation rather than a proven ad blocker.
