The evidence supports five useful options—not a defensible ranking of eleven: GitHub Codespaces with Visual Studio Live Share, Replit, Zed, Visual Studio Live Share on its own, and AWS Cloud9. They serve different workflows, and two have significant lifecycle cautions: Microsoft says Live Share is in maintenance mode, while JetBrains has announced a sunset for Code With Me.
Which collaborative coding tool should you choose?
Start with the environment your team already uses. For a GitHub-based cloud workspace, consider Codespaces with Live Share. For a browser-hosted project that combines editing and execution, Replit is a natural fit. For collaborators using Zed, its multiplayer editing shares a project from the local editor. AWS Cloud9 offers shared cloud environments, though the available documentation here does not establish its current lifecycle or account eligibility.
Do not treat the options as interchangeable. Some share a host’s project or development environment; others put the project in a browser-based workspace. That affects setup, execution, guest permissions, and what data is exposed.

1. GitHub Codespaces with Visual Studio Live Share
This pairing suits teams that already use GitHub and want collaborators to work inside a preconfigured cloud development environment. GitHub documents Live Share sessions in a Codespace through either the VS Code web client or desktop app. Sessions support real-time editing and debugging. The Codespace is the development environment; Live Share supplies the collaboration session.

Access and safety

Compute and storage cost
GitHub’s billing documentation, accessed in 2026, lists personal-account monthly included allowances of 120 compute hours and 15 GB-month of storage on Free, and 180 compute hours and 20 GB-month on Pro. Published compute rates range from $0.18 per hour for 2 cores to $2.88 per hour for 32 cores; storage is $0.07 per GB-month. These are volatile rates, not a cost estimate for a particular team. Organization and enterprise plans do not receive the personal free quota. Check GitHub’s current Codespaces billing details before budgeting.
2. Replit
Replit is a browser-oriented option when a team wants editing and hosted execution in a common project. Its collaboration page describes live cursors, running code with shared results, chat, and project sharing by link. That makes it worth considering for quick starts, teaching, and prototypes where avoiding local editor setup is useful. Replit’s page also carries a testimonial from Morgan McGuire, Lead Growth ML at Weights & Biases, describing the service as useful for building, hosting, and testing a proof of concept and collaborating on the codebase. This is a customer quotation published by Replit, not an independent benchmark. No comparable productivity or code-quality statistics are established here.
3. Zed
Zed offers real-time multiplayer editing in its editor: collaborators can see one another’s cursors and edits. Its documentation also describes persistent project channels with shared projects and voice chat, along with ad hoc contacts and private calls. It is a different model from a browser IDE: the project is shared from a local Zed workspace.
That distinction matters for privacy. Zed warns that sharing a project gives collaborators access to the local file system within that project. Review what the project contains and invite only trusted participants. The available documentation does not establish pricing, supported operating systems, language coverage, or offline behavior, so do not use those as selection criteria without checking Zed’s current information. 4. Visual Studio Live Share
Live Share supports collaborative editing and debugging, terminal-instance sharing, localhost app forwarding, and voice calls, according to Microsoft’s documentation. It can be useful to teams that already rely on it, but Microsoft identifies it as being in maintenance mode, with no additional features planned. 5. AWS Cloud9
AWS documents Cloud9 shared environments for pair programming, classes, and other real-time collaboration. Its roles distinguish the owner from read/write and read-only participants. That role model can help structure access, but the shared-environment page alone does not establish Cloud9’s current service lifecycle, pricing, or account eligibility. What happened to JetBrains Code With Me?
Code With Me’s feature set has included shared editing, pair-programming modes, participant following, debugging, voice and video calls, screen sharing, port forwarding, and host-configurable permissions. JetBrains’ enterprise guide says up to five participants can actively type at once; once that limit is reached, others are prompted to wait, and performance may slow.

More importantly, JetBrains announced a gradual sunset. Its announcement says IDE release 2026.1 is the last to officially support Code With Me, that no new features will be developed from that point, and that a transition period runs into Q1 2027. Because availability can change during that transition, check JetBrains’ current announcement before relying on it. It is not a sound default for a new, long-lived collaboration setup. Find where the project actually runs
- Cloud codespace: Codespaces provides a preconfigured remote environment.
- Browser-hosted project: Replit combines collaboration with hosted execution.
- Host’s local editor: Zed shares a local project, with associated file-system access.
- Shared cloud IDE: Cloud9 documents shared environments and participant roles.
Check guest permissions, not just join friction
Ask whether a guest can only view, edit files, use a terminal, run code, debug, or reach forwarded ports. Confirm whether the session exposes local files or a broader environment. A convenient invitation link does not itself make access safe. GitHub, JetBrains, and Zed all document permission or access considerations in their collaboration guidance.
Account for setup and lifecycle
Consider whether participants need a particular editor or can join in a browser. GitHub documents VS Code web and desktop entry points for Live Share in Codespaces; Replit describes link-based joining. Also distinguish a feature that still works from one receiving active development: Live Share is in maintenance mode, and Code With Me has an announced sunset timeline.

- Choosing by the word “collaboration” alone: Establish whether you need shared execution, a host’s local project, or simultaneous editing in a hosted workspace.
- Sharing a project without checking its contents: Remove secrets and sensitive files from the shared scope, then set the narrowest available permissions.
