Keeping WordPress up to date is the project’s recommended practice because only the latest major release is officially supported and actively maintained. Older versions may receive security fixes, but WordPress does not guarantee that they will. Update through your site’s dashboard after making a backup, and check compatibility for your particular themes, plugins, host, and custom code.

Why WordPress recommends updating

WordPress.org’s official Updating WordPress guide puts it plainly: “You should always update WordPress to the latest version.” The recommendation is grounded in security and support: the project actively maintains only its latest major release.

Older major branches may receive security fixes, but WordPress.org describes those backports as a courtesy, without a guaranteed coverage level or timeframe. It does not offer a fixed support period or an LTS version. That means staying on an older release leaves you without the same assurance of active maintenance as the current major version.

A security-fix example

WordPress.org’s notice for WordPress 7.0.2, published July 17, 2026, lists several security fixes and recommends updating immediately. It also notes fixes for certain older affected branches as a courtesy. This is an example of how security updates have been handled, not evidence that 7.0.2 remains the latest release indefinitely.

Is it safe to update WordPress?

WordPress provides a general update procedure, not a guarantee that a release will work with every individual site. Whether an update is compatible depends on that site’s theme, plugins, hosting environment, and custom code. If those components are business-critical or unusual, check their compatibility and your host’s update guidance before proceeding.

A backup is the practical safeguard: WordPress.org recommends making one before an update so you have a way to restore the site if something goes wrong. The general documentation cannot establish the compatibility or safety of an update for a particular installation.

How to update WordPress safely

  1. Back up the site. Save a restorable backup before changing WordPress files or the database.
  2. Open Dashboard > Updates. You can also use the update notice shown in the admin area. Select Update Now and follow the prompts.
  3. Complete any database upgrade. If the admin area asks to upgrade the database after the software update, follow that prompt.
  4. Check the site afterward. Reactivate plugins if needed and clear caches where your site uses them.

WordPress documentation says minor and security updates can install automatically on many sites. Major feature releases require action in the documented workflow, so do not assume every major upgrade will happen in the background.

If the dashboard update fails

WordPress supports manual updating as an alternative, but it involves replacing core files and should follow the project’s manual-update instructions. Use the instructions for your setup rather than improvising file changes. Complete any database upgrade requested in the admin area.

If an update causes problems, the WordPress guide describes restoring the backup and replacing files with those from a previous release archive as recovery options. A backup made before the update gives you a recovery point; the right repair steps depend on what failed.

Dashboard or manual update?

Route When it fits What to expect
Dashboard one-click update The usual route for site owners whose admin area offers the update. Use Dashboard > Updates or the update notice, then follow any database-upgrade prompt.
Manual file update When one-click updating fails or the site’s setup calls for the manual method. Follow WordPress.org’s manual instructions to replace core files; a database upgrade may still be requested.
Automatic minor or security update Many installations can install these updates automatically. Availability depends on the installation; this does not mean major feature releases are automatically installed.

Whatever route you use, prepare a backup first and verify the site afterward.
