Start with the WordPress.org Theme Directory when you want a free, reviewed theme installed from WordPress. Choose a paid listing on ThemeForest when you need a commercial product, but treat the purchase as a license for a specific use—not unrestricted ownership. Independent developer shops are another route, provided you verify their terms and maintenance record yourself.

Which WordPress theme marketplace should you use?

Route What you get What to verify before activation or payment
WordPress.org Theme Directory Free downloadable themes in the official directory, with search, filters, previews and reviewed submissions. Themes hosted there are 100% GPL or compatible. Layout and feature fit, block-editor or full-site-editing support, preview quality, ratings, support activity, recent maintenance and compatibility.
ThemeForest Commercial WordPress theme listings whose use is governed by the applicable item license. The exact license, included support and its duration, updates, compatibility, demo documentation, required builders or plugins, refund rules and marketplace terms.
Independent developer shops Custom or commercially distributed themes outside the main directory. WordPress recognizes this as another publishing route. Seller identity, license, update policy, support, compatibility, refund terms and whether a free version or trial exists.

The available official documentation supports this two-route comparison; it does not establish a complete ranking of every marketplace or seller. A large sales count or attractive screenshot is not proof that a theme suits your site.

What the WordPress.org directory offers

Free installation from the administration area

WordPress says users can install directory themes directly from the administration screens. You can search the directory, open a theme’s details, preview it and install it without downloading from an unknown third-party site. Its stated mission is: “The goal of the Theme Directory isn’t to host every theme in the world, it’s to host the best open source WordPress themes around.” See the directory’s getting-started guidance for the installation and review approach.

Filters and block-theme discovery

The WordPress documentation page updated August 7, 2026 reports more than 9,000 themes. Its filters cover layout, subject and features, including ways to find block themes. Use those filters to narrow the field by the editing model your site actually uses rather than by visual style alone.

Preview before you activate

Open the live preview and test representative pages, menus, headings, archives and mobile layouts. WordPress documentation advises investigating a blank or broken preview before activation; a missing preview can indicate a problem worth resolving rather than a theme to install blindly.

How to evaluate a ThemeForest listing

Read the item license first

ThemeForest explains that a marketplace purchase grants a license to use an item. The applicable rights depend on the item and intended use, so read the current license terms and the listing’s FAQ before paying. Do not assume that buying a theme transfers ownership, permits unlimited client sites or covers every distribution model.

Check dependencies and maintenance

  • Identify required page builders, plugins, frameworks or bundled extensions.
  • Check the latest update date and stated WordPress, PHP and editor compatibility.
  • Compare the live demo with the layouts you need, including accessibility-relevant navigation and content states.
  • Read support scope and duration, update access and refund conditions on that individual listing.
  • Confirm whether importing the demo brings unwanted content, subscriptions or proprietary lock-in.

Marketplace terms and product details can vary by item and change over time. Verify the listing immediately before purchase instead of relying on a general marketplace assumption.

Licensing: GPL, commercial items and practical limits

WordPress.org states that WordPress is released under GPLv2 or later. The project also states that it considers themes and plugins derivative works that inherit GPL, while acknowledging legal grey areas. That is the WordPress project’s position, not a substitute for legal advice about a particular business arrangement.

The directory’s hosted themes are described as 100% GPL or compatible. A ThemeForest item, by contrast, is presented through its marketplace license. Read the precise terms for the product, the number and type of sites covered, client work, redistribution and support before deployment.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Define the site: list required templates, content types, editor (block editor or a builder), performance constraints and essential integrations.
  2. Choose the route: search WordPress.org for a free directory theme, or compare a paid listing where its license and support model match the project.
  3. Test the preview: inspect home, posts, pages, archives, navigation, forms and responsive behavior with realistic content.
  4. Verify compatibility: check the current WordPress and PHP requirements, editor support, dependencies and update history.
  5. Read support and license terms: confirm what is included, for how long and for which sites or uses.
  6. Install safely: back up the site, test on staging when possible and activate only after checking imports and required plugins.

When an independent theme shop makes sense

Independent shops can provide a specialized design, a custom build or a direct relationship with the developer. WordPress’s theme-publishing guidance recognizes distribution outside the official directory. Because no single quality or support standard applies across these sellers, verify the company, changelog, compatibility claims, license, update cadence, support channel and refund policy yourself. Treat a free download, trial or staging license as useful evidence when the seller offers one, not as a guarantee of long-term maintenance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing from screenshots without testing real content and mobile layouts.
  • Assuming a directory or marketplace label guarantees coding quality or suitability.
  • Ignoring required builders and plugins that add ongoing dependencies.
  • Confusing a paid license with ownership or unlimited reuse.
  • Activating an untested theme directly on a production site without a backup.
  • Using an old review, price or compatibility claim when the current listing says something different.

Bottom line

For a free, official starting point, use the WordPress.org Theme Directory and its filters, previews and review information. For commercial themes, ThemeForest is a broad marketplace, but the individual item’s license, dependencies, support and update record determine whether it fits. Independent shops can also work well when you perform the same checks. The best marketplace is the one whose theme passes those checks for your specific site—not the one with the most impressive thumbnail or sales badge.
