What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Windows normally saves screenshots in %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots, which usually resolves to C:Users<your-user-name>PicturesScreenshots. The folder belongs to the signed-in Windows user, so another account on the same PC can have a different path. Snipping Tool and Windows+PrtScn can create files there, while PrtSc by itself usually places an image only on the clipboard.
What the default screenshot folder is
Windows identifies the location as the per-user Screenshots known folder (Microsoft calls it FOLDERID_Screenshots). On an unchanged profile, it is inside the user’s Pictures folder. Because it is a known folder rather than one hard-coded system directory, its visible location can change if you moved Pictures, redirected the Screenshots folder, or enabled OneDrive backup for Pictures.
- Typical local path:
C:Users<your-user-name>PicturesScreenshots - Environment-variable form:
%USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots - OneDrive-backed example:
C:Users<user>OneDrivePicturesScreenshots, if your Pictures folder is located in OneDrive
The exact user name and drive letter are machine-specific. A work or school policy can also redirect the folder, so do not assume every account uses the same physical directory.
Which Windows capture method saves a file?
The shortcut you use determines whether Windows writes an image immediately or merely copies pixels for you to paste somewhere else.

| Method | What it captures | File created automatically? | Editing workflow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S | A selected rectangle, window, or full-screen area through the Snipping Tool overlay | Current Snipping Tool versions can auto-save to the Screenshots folder; the behavior is controlled in Snipping Tool settings | Yes. The result opens in the Snipping Tool workflow for markup and saving |
| Snipping Tool app | Rectangular, window, full-screen, and other modes offered by the installed version | Microsoft Support says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder when automatic saving is enabled | Yes. Open See More > Settings to inspect or change automatic-save behavior and the default folder |
| PrtSc or PrtScn | The entire screen | No guaranteed file. The image is copied to the clipboard | Paste into Paint, an editor, or another app, then save manually |
| Windows+PrtScn | The entire screen | Yes, through the Windows screenshot workflow; it follows any redirected Screenshots known-folder location | No Snipping Tool editing step is required; open the resulting file in an editor afterward |
If you pressed PrtSc and cannot find a new image, that is expected: check the clipboard by opening Paint and pressing Ctrl+V, then save the pasted image.
How to open the folder in File Explorer
- Press Windows+E to open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar, type
%USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots, and press Enter. - Sort by Date modified to put the newest capture at the top.
If Explorer reports that the location does not exist, the known folder may have been moved, your capture may still be in the clipboard, or the Snipping Tool may be configured not to auto-save. Continue with the location checks below.
Check whether Windows moved the Screenshots folder
Use the folder’s Location tab
- In File Explorer, open your Pictures folder and locate Screenshots.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Location tab. The displayed path is the folder Windows currently uses.
The same per-user setting is represented in Windows’ User Shell Folders configuration. You generally do not need to edit the registry: the folder Properties dialog is safer and shows the effective location. If there is no Location tab, you may be viewing a normal folder rather than the registered known folder, or the folder has not yet been created.
Inspect Snipping Tool’s save setting
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select See More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Review the automatic-save option and the default Screenshots folder shown there.
- Capture a small test region and verify the resulting file in the displayed location.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds do not all present identical labels, but the control is in Snipping Tool’s Settings rather than in the keyboard shortcut itself. If the option is disabled, use the Save button in the capture window and choose a folder manually.
Change where Snipping Tool saves screenshots
Change the Snipping Tool destination
In Snipping Tool, go to See More > Settings and change the automatic-save or default Screenshots-folder setting offered by your build. Capture a test image afterward; do not rely on an old file’s location because changing the setting does not necessarily move existing screenshots.

Move the Windows known folder
For a registered Screenshots folder, right-click Screenshots, choose Properties, and use the Location tab’s available controls to select a new destination and apply the change. Windows then records the new per-user known-folder path. Create or select a dedicated folder rather than the root of a drive, and confirm that your account has write permission there.
What happens to old files?
Files already saved in the former directory stay there unless you move them yourself. New captures follow the updated setting. If an application still writes to the old location, restart that application and recheck its own save preferences.
How OneDrive changes the visible path
Microsoft no longer provides a separate Save screenshots to OneDrive switch in OneDrive settings. To back up screenshots, include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup. When Pictures itself is redirected into OneDrive, the effective Screenshots path includes the OneDrive folder, such as C:Users<user>OneDrivePicturesScreenshots. The exact OneDrive directory varies by account and setup.
To determine whether this is your case, open OneDrive settings and check which folders are backed up, then inspect the Pictures folder’s address in File Explorer. A cloud icon beside a file indicates its OneDrive sync state; it does not by itself prove that Snipping Tool is using a different Screenshots setting.
Why a screenshot is missing
You used PrtSc instead of Windows+PrtScn
PrtSc is clipboard-oriented. Open Paint or another image editor, paste with Ctrl+V, and save a file. For a full-screen file created automatically, use Windows+PrtScn.

The Snipping Tool capture is visible but no file appears
Open Snipping Tool’s See More > Settings. Automatic saving may be off, or the destination may have changed. Use the Save command in the capture window as a reliable fallback.
The Screenshots folder is empty
- Check the folder’s Properties > Location path instead of assuming the default.
- Search File Explorer for
*.png,*.jpg, and*.webp, then sort by date. This can reveal captures saved manually or by another utility. - Confirm you are signed in to the Windows account that took the screenshot; known folders are per-user.
- If Pictures is protected or redirected, verify that your account can write to the destination.
You cannot find a screenshot after using Windows+Shift+S
The shortcut opens the Snipping Tool overlay. Select the region, then watch for the Snipping Tool notification or open the app to finish editing and saving. If automatic saving is enabled, look in the configured Screenshots folder; otherwise use Save and select a known directory.

You need a screenshot from another program
Browsers, game overlays, graphics tools, and third-party capture utilities often maintain their own destinations. Check that application’s settings and recent-files list; Windows’ Screenshots known folder is not a universal location for every screenshot-producing program.
Or skip the browser setup: capture a clean website with ScreenshotNeo
If your goal is an automated screenshot of a web page rather than a picture of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the complete parameter list and authentication details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. These runnable examples capture Stripe; replace only the target URL and your key.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Windows account share one Screenshots folder?
No. The Screenshots known folder is tied to each Windows user profile, so separate accounts can resolve it to different directories.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I recover a PrtSc image after restarting the computer?
Usually not from Windows itself. PrtSc places the image on the clipboard, which is volatile; paste and save it immediately when you need a permanent file.

Will changing the folder rename or move my existing screenshots?
No. Changing the destination controls future captures. Move older files separately if you want them together.
Why do screenshots have different file extensions?
The extension reflects the application and save choice. Windows captures are commonly PNG, while other tools may use JPEG, WebP, or another format.
Is a screenshot made in a web browser automatically stored in Windows’ Screenshots folder?
Not necessarily. Browser extensions and other applications can use their own download or export directories; check that program’s settings.
The Bottom Line
For a normal Windows profile, start with %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots. If it is empty, determine whether you used a clipboard-only shortcut, changed the known-folder location, or redirected Pictures through OneDrive.
