Most “failed” Windows screenshots are not failures at all: Print Screen copies an image to the clipboard, while Windows + PrtScn saves a file. If you check the wrong destination, it looks as though nothing happened. Use the shortcut that matches the result you need, then follow the troubleshooting path below for clipboard, file-location, keyboard and Snipping Tool problems.

Start with the result you want

Before changing settings, decide whether you need an image ready to paste or a file stored on disk. Windows offers different shortcuts for each job, and their behavior can vary with your keyboard and release of Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Method Capture scope Where the result goes Hardware or setting notes
Print Screen (PrtSc) Entire screen Clipboard Paste with Ctrl+V; Microsoft describes this as a static image placed in the clipboard.
Alt + Print Screen Active window Clipboard Paste with Ctrl+V.
Windows + Shift + S Selected rectangle, window, full screen or other Snipping Tool mode Clipboard, then Snipping Tool for editing and saving Opens the snipping overlay.
Windows + PrtScn Entire screen File in PicturesScreenshots Requires a usable PrtScn key or the device’s documented alternative.
Fn + Windows + Space Device-dependent screen capture Depends on the device’s implementation Microsoft lists this as an alternative on some keyboards without a PrtSc key.

Microsoft’s instructions for Snipping Tool, copying window or screen contents and the Print Screen shortcut document these destinations. Feature labels can differ by Windows update and hardware.

Fix a screenshot that seems to do nothing

1. Test the clipboard directly

  1. Press Print Screen once. Do not expect a notification or a new file.
  2. Open Paint, Word, an email compose window or another application that accepts images.
  3. Press Ctrl+V. If the image appears, the capture worked; you were checking the wrong destination.

Alt+Print Screen performs the same clipboard workflow but limits the image to the currently active window. Click the window first so it has focus.

2. Use the Snipping Tool overlay for a selected area

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose the capture mode shown in the overlay, then drag over the region or select the window or full-screen option.
  3. Use the notification or open Snipping Tool to annotate, edit and save the snip.
  4. If you only need to paste it, switch to the destination application and press Ctrl+V.

This route avoids relying on a dedicated PrtSc key and is usually the clearest way to capture one control, dialog or region. The result is copied to the clipboard; saving is a separate action in Snipping Tool.

3. Save a full-screen file intentionally

Press Windows+PrtScn. Then open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots. If your Pictures folder is redirected to OneDrive, the physical location may be under that synchronized Pictures folder. You can also save a snip from Snipping Tool and choose a different folder and filename.

Do not confuse this shortcut with plain Print Screen: one saves a file, the other only copies an image.

Where Windows screenshots go

Clipboard captures

Images made with Print Screen, Alt+Print Screen or a Snipping Tool selection are available to paste. They are not automatically written as files merely because the capture occurred. Paste first, then use the receiving application’s Save or Export command, or save from Snipping Tool.

Saved captures

Windows+PrtScn places full-screen images in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures according to Microsoft’s keyboard guidance. In File Explorer, use the search box for *.png and sort by Date modified if you are unsure which Pictures location your account uses.

Clipboard history is different

Press Windows+V. If Windows displays a prompt, select Turn on. Clipboard history is an optional panel and is not enabled by default; ordinary copy and paste of a screenshot does not require it. Microsoft explains the distinction in Using the clipboard. Turning history on cannot retroactively create a file that was never saved.

Why is my Print Screen button not working?

It may be assigned to screen snipping

Windows can assign the Print Screen key to open the screen-snipping overlay instead of performing a silent full-screen clipboard copy. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review the Print Screen option. If pressing the key opens the overlay, that is the configured behavior, not evidence that the switch is broken. Microsoft lists this setting in its Windows keyboard shortcuts guidance.

The key may require Fn

Laptops and compact keyboards often combine screen capture with another key. Look for a label such as PrtSc, PrtScn or a camera icon and try Fn with that key. On some devices without a dedicated PrtSc button, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as an alternative. Exact combinations vary by manufacturer, so the built-in Windows+Shift+S path is the dependable fallback.

The keyboard may not have focus

For Alt+Print Screen, click the target window before pressing the shortcut. For a web page or document, click inside the application rather than a disconnected remote-session window. Then paste into a known image-capable program to separate a capture problem from a destination-program problem.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Symptom Likely explanation Action
Nothing appears after Print Screen The image is on the clipboard with no visual confirmation. Paste with Ctrl+V in Paint or another image-capable app.
Paste inserts old text or an old image The new capture did not reach the clipboard, or the target app does not accept bitmap data. Retry, use Windows+Shift+S, and paste into Paint to test.
A screenshot cannot be found in Pictures You used clipboard capture, or the account’s Pictures folder is redirected. Use Windows+PrtScn, then check Pictures > Screenshots and search for recent PNG files.
Print Screen opens a selection bar The Accessibility keyboard setting assigns the key to screen snipping. Use the overlay, or review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
The keyboard has no PrtSc label The device uses a combined key or omits the key. Try the documented Fn combination; otherwise use Snipping Tool.
Windows + V shows no earlier captures Clipboard history is off. Press Windows+V and choose Turn on; this is separate from normal paste.
Only part of a multi-window desktop is needed Full-screen capture is the wrong scope. Use Alt+Print Screen for the active window or select a region with Windows+Shift+S.

When the application, not Windows, is the obstacle

Some protected video, remote-desktop and enterprise applications can restrict copying or display a blank result. The Microsoft pages cited here do not establish one universal policy for every application, so treat an empty or black capture as application-specific when the same shortcut works in Paint and ordinary windows. Test a non-protected window, then check the application owner’s policy rather than repeatedly changing Windows keyboard settings.

For privacy, remember that a screenshot can include passwords, private messages, customer data and browser tabs. Paste into a controlled application, crop or redact before sharing, and avoid enabling clipboard history on a shared computer unless its retained entries are acceptable.

A repeatable diagnostic sequence

  1. Capture a harmless test window with Windows+Shift+S and paste into Paint.
  2. Press Print Screen and paste into the same Paint window.
  3. Press Windows+PrtScn, then check Pictures > Screenshots for a newly modified file.
  4. If the first two tests work but the third does not, investigate the key combination, Fn layer or keyboard mapping rather than the clipboard.
  5. If none works, use Snipping Tool from the Start menu, install pending Windows updates through Settings, and test with another keyboard if available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these shortcuts behave identically on every Windows computer?

No. Microsoft documents the shortcuts for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but keyboard layouts, Fn layers, Accessibility settings and release-specific labels can change the behavior. Use Snipping Tool when a dedicated key is unavailable or mapped differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I recover a screenshot after restarting Windows?

Only if it was saved as a file or retained by an application or enabled clipboard-history entry. A plain clipboard capture that was never pasted or saved should be treated as lost after the clipboard is replaced or cleared.

Which shortcut should I teach to someone who is new to Windows?

Teach Windows + Shift + S first: it visibly opens a selection tool and lets the user paste or save the result. Explain Print Screen separately so they know it normally targets the clipboard.
