To download an image from an HTTPS link as a JPG, first check whether the link points directly to the image or to a webpage that contains it. Save the image file, then check its actual format: if it is already JPEG, a .jpg or .jpeg filename is enough; if it is PNG, WebP, or another format, open it in an image editor and export it as JPEG. Renaming a file does not convert it.
Check whether the HTTPS link points to an image or a webpage
An HTTPS address can identify a webpage, an image, or another file; as the curl documentation explains, the URL alone does not tell you which. If you open the link and see only the image, it is likely a direct image resource. If you see a full website, downloading that address may save the page’s HTML rather than its picture.
For a webpage, locate the image you want. In a desktop browser, you may be able to open the image itself in a new tab or use the image’s context menu to save it. If the image is generated or shown as part of a page, the page URL and the image’s own URL may be different.
Save an image from a browser
Desktop Chrome
- Open the webpage containing the image, or open the direct image link.
- Right-click the image and choose Save image as, as documented in Chrome Help.
- Choose a folder and filename in the save dialog, then save the file.
- Check the format before treating the result as a JPG. A filename ending in
.jpgdoes not prove that its contents are JPEG.
Menu wording and steps can differ in other browsers, mobile browsers, or versions of Chrome. On a phone or tablet, look for the browser’s image actions, such as a long-press menu, but consult the help for that browser and device if the option is not present.

Download a direct image URL with curl
Use curl when you want to save a direct image resource from a terminal or script. The -L option follows redirects, and -o sets the local filename. Replace the example address with the image URL:
curl -L -o picture.jpg "https://example.com/path/image"The command writes the response to picture.jpg. The -o option controls the filename only; it does not decode or convert the image. If the URL leads to a webpage, the downloaded response may be HTML saved under a misleading image filename. curl can retrieve documents over HTTPS when built with TLS support; see its HTTPS scripting documentation and manual.
Let curl derive the filename
If the URL has a useful filename at the end, use -O (also called --remote-name) to save under that name:
curl -L -O "https://example.com/path/picture.jpg"To use a filename suggested by the server’s Content-Disposition header, curl supports -J together with -O:

curl -L -OJ "https://example.com/path/image?download=1"A server-suggested filename can be opaque or have an extension that does not match the image’s actual encoding. Inspect the downloaded file rather than treating its name as proof of its format.
Save with a different local name
Use -o whenever you want to set the destination path yourself, including when the URL contains query parameters or has no filename:
curl -L -o downloads/source-image "https://example.com/image?id=123"The path after -o is where curl writes the response. Ensure the destination folder exists and that you have permission to write there. Choose a neutral filename until you have checked whether the content is JPEG; otherwise you might label a PNG or an HTML error page as a JPG.
Check the image format before calling it a JPG
JPEG is the image format; .jpg and .jpeg are common extensions for files in that format. The MDN image-format reference identifies JPEG with the media type image/jpeg. Neither a URL ending in .jpg nor a local filename ending in .jpg guarantees that the file’s bytes are JPEG.

- If the downloaded image is already JPEG, you can keep it and use a
.jpgor.jpegfilename. No conversion is needed. - If it is a different image format, use an editor that can open that format and save or export as JPEG.
- If the download appears to be a webpage, error message, or empty file, changing its extension will not make it an image. Recheck the URL and download process.
The file extension is a naming convention, not a conversion tool. For example, changing picture.webp to picture.jpg does not turn WebP data into JPEG data.
Convert a supported image to JPEG in Windows Paint
Microsoft says Paint can save images in JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, and other formats. If your installed Paint version can open the downloaded image, use it to create an actual JPEG:
- Open Paint and open the downloaded image.
- Select File, then Save as.
- Choose the JPEG format, select a destination, and save the converted copy.
- Keep the original if you may need its original format or quality later.
Input support depends on the installed Paint and Windows version; the product page does not establish that every release can open every image format. JPEG uses lossy compression, so saving or converting can discard image data. Avoid repeatedly opening and resaving a JPEG when preserving quality matters.
Choose the method that matches the link

Troubleshooting failed or incorrect downloads
The saved file is HTML, not an image
The URL may point to a webpage, redirect to a page, or return an error page. Open the link in a browser and determine whether it displays only the image. If it is a webpage, locate the image resource and save that instead. With curl, -L follows redirects, but it does not turn a page response into an image.
The file ends in .jpg but will not open as JPEG
The filename may not match the response format, or the download may not be an image at all. Try saving with a neutral filename, then check the file using an image viewer or editor. If it is another supported image format, convert it with an editor’s JPEG save/export option. Do not use renaming as a substitute.
curl reports an error or creates no file
Check that the URL is complete and quoted, that the destination folder exists, and that you can write to it. If the address redirects, include -L. If you still cannot retrieve the image, open the URL in a browser to see whether it requires a page interaction or returns a visible error. The available documentation does not establish a universal fix for server-specific access restrictions.
The converted image looks softer or differs from the original
JPEG is lossy. Re-encoding can affect image data, and repeated JPEG saves can add further loss. Keep the original file and convert from that source rather than repeatedly saving the converted JPEG.

Is JPG different from JPEG?
Both extensions commonly refer to the JPEG image format. The extension alone does not verify the contents.
Can I download an HTTPS image link on a phone?
Usually you can save an image through the browser’s image actions, but exact steps and menu labels depend on the browser, device, and version. The desktop Chrome instructions above do not guarantee identical mobile controls.
Do I need to convert an image already saved as JPEG?
No. If the downloaded content is already JPEG, keep it; a suitable .jpg or .jpeg name is sufficient.
