Choose a snip type and save it from Snipping Tool. If you need a PNG of the VM display saved directly on the host instead, VirtualBox 7.1.8 provides a host-side screenshot command. The right method depends on whether you want Windows to capture its own screen or the virtualization host to capture the guest display.
First decide which computer should take the screenshot
A virtual machine has two operating systems in play. The guest is Windows running inside the VM. The host is the physical computer running the virtualization software. A guest screenshot captures Windows content; a host screenshot captures the display as shown by the VM application. That difference affects what appears in the image, which machine receives your keyboard shortcut, and where the resulting file is saved.
- Use the guest for a selection, a particular window, or an image you want to edit or annotate in Windows.
- Use the host when you need the whole guest display saved directly to a host file, or a VM shortcut is being intercepted.
- Use a shared or redirected location when the capture is made in Windows but you need the file on the host. The location must be available to both systems.
For most ordinary captures, start with the Windows Snipping Tool inside the guest. It gives you several image capture modes without requiring a hypervisor-specific command.
Take a screenshot inside the Windows guest
Use the Snipping Tool shortcut
- Click inside the VM window so the guest can receive keyboard input.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, select a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
- Make the selection or choose the window or screen to capture. The image is copied into the Snipping Tool window, where you can edit, save, or share it.
- Press Ctrl + S in Snipping Tool, choose a destination accessible from Windows, and save the image.
The shortcut and capture guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though the interface can differ by release. If the overlay does not appear, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it from the guest instead. This avoids relying on a shortcut that the host might intercept.

Choose a capture mode
- Rectangular snip: drag around a defined area, such as a dialog or part of an application.
- Freeform snip: draw an irregular boundary around the content you need.
- Window snip: capture a particular window rather than the whole desktop.
- Full-screen snip: capture the guest’s complete visible screen.
Snipping Tool also documents Ctrl + C to copy a capture and Alt + D to set a delay. A delay is useful when you need time to open a menu or arrange a transient interface before the snip. Do not substitute Windows key + Shift + R when you want a still image: Microsoft documents that shortcut for video capture, not the image snipping overlay.
Use Print Screen for a quick full-screen copy
Inside the guest, press Print Screen (often labeled PrtSc) to copy a static image of the full screen to the clipboard. Switch to an image editor or document in Windows and paste it. This is a clipboard capture, so it does not by itself create a named image file. Use Snipping Tool if you want to select a region or save the capture directly from its window.
Keyboard layouts and VM input settings can affect how a key combination is sent. If Print Screen or another shortcut acts on the host, return focus to the VM and check the virtualization application’s keyboard capture or host-key behavior. The exact forwarding behavior depends on the VM application and its configuration; there is no single shortcut rule that applies to every host and hypervisor.

Save a guest capture where the host can access it
A screenshot made inside Windows is initially handled by the guest. Saving it to a guest-only folder does not automatically put a copy on the physical computer. Choose a destination the host can reach, use a configured shared folder, or transfer the file through an integration feature supported by your VM setup.

Capture the VM display from the host in VirtualBox
If you want a PNG of the guest display as a file on the host, Oracle documents this command for VirtualBox 7.1.8:
VBoxManage controlvm <uuid | vmname> screenshotpng <filename> [display]
Run VBoxManage on the host, replacing the placeholders with the VM identifier or name and the output filename. The optional display value selects a guest display; Oracle specifies 0 for a single-monitor guest display. For example, where the VM is named WinTest and the host can write to the current directory:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
VBoxManage controlvm WinTest screenshotpng windows-guest.png 0
This is a host-side capture and produces a PNG file at the path you specify on the host. It is useful when the guest does not receive a key combination or when you need the image written directly to a host location. The syntax is version-specific: check the manual for the VirtualBox release actually installed rather than assuming this command is identical in every release.

A host operating system’s own screenshot tool is another option: capture the VM window or display from the host. That records what the host shows, so the result may include VirtualBox controls, window borders, or other host interface elements. Crop the image afterward if you need only the guest content.
What to do when the shortcut or capture fails
| What happens | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S affects the host or does nothing in the guest | The VM does not have keyboard focus, or the host or VM software handles the combination. | Click inside the guest and try again. If it is still intercepted, launch Snipping Tool from the guest Start menu or use a host-side method supported by the hypervisor. |
| Print Screen seems to do nothing | It copies to the clipboard rather than necessarily opening a save dialog. | Paste into an image editor or document in the guest. For a saved, selectable snip, use Snipping Tool and Ctrl + S. |
| The screenshot exists in Windows but is missing from the host | The image was saved to a guest-only path. | Save to a configured shared or redirected location, or transfer the file using an integration available in that VM configuration. |
| VBoxManage cannot find the VM or cannot write the image | The VM name or identifier may be wrong, the command may be running on the wrong system, or the output path may not be writable. | Run the command on the host, verify the VM identifier or name, and choose a host path where the command can create a file. Confirm the syntax against the installed VirtualBox version. |
| A host screenshot includes borders or controls | The host tool captured the VM application window, not only the guest desktop. | Use the VirtualBox PNG command where appropriate, or crop the host capture. |
| A Hyper-V guest capture cannot be reached from the host | Enhanced Session Mode or the required local resource may not be enabled or selected. | Check the host policy and settings, then select the needed local resource before connecting through VMConnect. Availability depends on configuration. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for capturing a Windows desktop or VM display. It is relevant if the screen you need is a website running in or served by your VM and is reachable by the API. For an actual webpage, one GET request returns an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL with the reachable webpage you want to capture. The service also accepts other screenshot API parameter names, which can make switching easier. It offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport options, dark mode, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait options, and controls for headers, cookies, user agent, request blocking, caching, and more. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Windows VM screenshot include the host desktop?
Not when you capture from inside the Windows guest. A host-side capture can include VM window borders or other host interface, depending on the capture method.
Can I use Snipping Tool to capture a video of a VM?
This guide covers still images. The Windows + Shift + R shortcut is documented for video capture, not for the Snipping Tool image overlay.
