The phrase “Google background image” can also mean a custom Google homepage background or a Chrome New Tab background. Those are separate settings, and Google’s customization controls apply an image but do not provide a documented download button for the currently displayed background.
First, identify which Google background you mean
There are three commonly confused cases:
- An image displayed on a Google page: save it with the normal browser image command.
- A Google homepage background: this is selected through the homepage’s background settings.
- A Chrome New Tab background: this is controlled by Chrome’s New Tab customization panel and is independent of the Google homepage.
The steps below cover each situation without assuming that an image selected as a background is exposed as a downloadable file.
Save a Google image on a computer
- Open Chrome and go to the page containing the image.
- Move the pointer over the image.
- Right-click the image and select Save image as.
- Choose a folder, change the filename if needed, and select Save.
Chrome normally places the file in your Downloads folder. Google lists Downloads as the default location on Windows, macOS, and Linux, although the exact folder path depends on your operating system and account settings.
Make Chrome ask where every image goes
If you do not want every download to go automatically to Downloads, open Chrome’s menu, choose Settings, then Downloads. Turn on the option that asks where to save each file before downloading. The same area lets you choose a different default download location.

Choose the correct file type
The saved format is determined by the image supplied by the page. A browser may save PNG, JPEG, WebP, or another format. If a page shows a visual preview but right-clicking produces no image option, the visible artwork may be a CSS background, canvas drawing, or protected viewer rather than a conventional image element. In that case, look for an image-specific download control supplied by the site. Do not assume that taking a screenshot produces the original-resolution source file.
Save the image on Android
- Open Chrome and navigate to the page containing the image.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Tap Download image.
- Open the device’s Downloads app or file manager to find the file.
If the menu says Download link rather than Download image, you pressed a link around the image. Touch and hold the actual picture, or open the image in its own tab first.
When Android opens an image instead of downloading it
Some pages link to the image file. Tap the image to open that file, then touch and hold it again and select Download image. If the page uses a gallery, use its own download button when available.
Save the image on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and visit the page with the image.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Tap Save Image.
- Open the Photos app to check the saved picture.
Depending on the available actions, Chrome may also show Save Image in…, which lets you save the image to Google Photos. If you do not see a save option, touch and hold the picture itself rather than surrounding text or a link.

Google homepage background versus an image you can download
Google’s homepage background feature is a customization setting, not a general image-download tool. The documented workflow is to sign in, select Change background image, choose an image source, and select the image. That workflow changes what the homepage displays; it does not document a command for downloading the background currently in use.
If you originally uploaded the picture, the original is still available wherever you stored it. If you selected it from a gallery or another source, return to that source and download the file there when the source provides a download option. A right-click may work if the background is implemented as a regular image, but it is not guaranteed.
Chrome New Tab background is a different setting
On desktop Chrome, open a New Tab page and select Customize Chrome (the label can appear as a pencil icon). Chrome’s customization panel lets you choose a theme or select Upload an image. It can also refresh a collection daily.
This setting affects Chrome’s New Tab page, not the Google homepage setting. If you uploaded the picture, keep the source copy because Chrome’s customization interface is for applying the image, not for exporting it later. For a gallery image, use the gallery or source site’s own download controls.

Troubleshooting: when saving does not work
There is no “Save image as” option
You may have right-clicked a blank area, text, or a link instead of the image. Try the center of the picture, open it in a new tab, and right-click again. Some sites disable the context menu; use an on-page download button or the browser’s page information and developer tools only when you have permission to access the asset.
The downloaded file is blank or has the wrong picture
Dynamic pages can display a placeholder first and replace it after loading. Wait for the image to finish loading, scroll it into view, and try again. A thumbnail may also link to a lower-resolution file; open the image itself before saving if the site offers that behavior.
The file cannot be found
Check Chrome’s Downloads list and the location shown for the item. On Android, check the Downloads app; on iPhone or iPad, check Photos and the Files app. If Chrome is configured to ask for a location, the file may be in the folder selected during the save dialog.
The image is a background, canvas, or video frame
A CSS background or canvas drawing may not expose the normal image menu. Use the website’s download control, ask the content owner for the original, or capture the page for reference. A screenshot is a rendered copy and may not preserve the source image’s resolution or metadata.

The page shows a consent banner, popup, or chat widget
Dismiss the banner or popup before saving. If the overlay prevents interaction, zoom out, use reader or simplified view when available, or open the image’s direct URL. Respect copyright, site terms, and any license attached to the image.

Can I save the Google logo as a background image?
You can save a normally displayed image with the device-specific steps above, but use of Google trademarks may be restricted. Check Google’s applicable brand and usage guidance before republishing it.
Where are Chrome downloads stored?
On a computer, Chrome uses the folder shown under Settings > Downloads. Android stores downloaded images in the Downloads app; iPhone and iPad images normally appear in Photos when saved with Save Image.
