To improve a WordPress SEO title, compare the title you authored with the article’s visible headline and the title link Google actually shows. Make the wording accurate, clear, distinctive, and natural for the reader’s search intent. Google can use the page’s HTML <title>, headings, and other prominent text to generate a search-result title, so the text entered in WordPress can influence the result but cannot guarantee an exact match. Google explains how it generates title links.
What are you analyzing: the WordPress title, page headline, or Google result?
These are related, but they are not necessarily the same text. The title you enter in WordPress may be used for the page’s HTML <title>; the article also has a visible main heading, and Google generates the title link shown in search results. Google may draw on several page signals, including the HTML title, headings, and prominent text, rather than reproducing the authored title verbatim. Its title-link guidance and SEO Starter Guide describe this distinction.
For a useful review, record all three versions: the WordPress-authored title, the headline readers see on the page, and the title link shown in Google. If the result differs, treat that as a reason to inspect the page’s signals—not as proof that the WordPress field failed.
How should you evaluate a headline before changing it?
Use the same criteria to compare the current title with any proposed alternatives. A title should identify the page clearly and set an accurate expectation for what the reader will find.

| Check | Ask | What to improve |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | Does the article deliver the promise the title makes? | Remove claims or implications the article does not support. |
| Reader language | Would someone looking for this information recognize the wording? | Use relevant terms naturally in the title and main heading, rather than forcing keyword variants. |
| Distinctiveness | Can readers distinguish this page from other pages on the site? | Replace repeated, boilerplate, or near-identical wording with a title specific to the page. |
| Clarity and concision | Can the subject be understood quickly? | Cut vague wording, filler, unnecessary length, and repeated terms. |
| Page alignment | Do the title and visible main heading describe the same subject? | Make the main heading clear and prominent; resolve conflicting wording that could make the page’s topic ambiguous. |
| Keyword use | Are keywords helping describe the page, or merely being repeated? | Keep useful phrasing natural and avoid keyword stuffing. |
These checks reflect Google’s title-link guidance and Search Essentials. Google advises writing descriptive, concise text for <title> elements. It does not give a universal character limit in this guidance; title links can be truncated to fit the device’s width.
How do you revise a WordPress title systematically?
- Check the article’s main answer. State in plain language what the page actually helps the reader understand or do. Remove a title promise the article does not fulfill.
- Identify the reader’s likely wording. Choose relevant phrases that describe the subject naturally, then use them where they fit in the title and main heading. Google recommends placing audience language in prominent locations on the page. Search Essentials
- Compare the title with other site pages. Look for duplicates, boilerplate, and titles that differ only by an unhelpful variation. Make the page’s specific subject apparent.
- Draft and compare alternatives. Check each candidate against the six criteria in the table. Prefer the clearest accurate option over a longer version that repeats keyword variations.
- Align the authored title and visible headline. They do not have to be identical in every publishing setup, but both should make the page’s subject clear and should not send conflicting signals.
- Review the published search result. Check the title link Google displays. If it differs from the authored title, inspect whether the title is descriptive, the visible headline is clear, and other prominent text or boilerplate creates ambiguity. Google may generate title links from multiple signals, so an exact match is not guaranteed. Google’s title-link documentation
How can Search Console data guide the review?
Search performance data can help identify pages and queries worth an editorial review. Google describes Search Console as a resource for understanding a site’s performance in Google Search; its documentation is available through Documentation to Improve SEO. Use the data to decide where to investigate, then assess the page and its title directly. A change in performance after editing a title does not, by itself, establish that the title change caused it, and Google’s cited guidance does not promise a ranking or click increase from revising a title.
