If WhatsApp shows only a URL when you send a link, check Disable link previews first. Open Settings (or your profile picture) > Privacy > Advanced, turn that option off, and send the link again. WhatsApp says the control is off by default and affects previews for links you send, not links you receive.
Start with the documented fix
- Open WhatsApp.
- Open Settings. On some versions you can reach settings by tapping your profile picture.
- Choose Privacy, then Advanced.
- Find Disable link previews.
- If it is enabled, switch it off and send the URL again in a new message.
WhatsApp Help Center states: “If you turn on Disable link previews, the links you send to others won’t generate a link preview.” WhatsApp describes this as an optional advanced security measure and says the setting is off by default. Menu names or placement can vary by app version, so look for the same label under the advanced privacy controls.
Know which direction the link is going
This setting is easy to misapply because it controls outgoing previews only.

WhatsApp explicitly says receiving previews has no impact on the recipient’s IP address. Therefore, turning this sender-side control off should not be presented as a fix for a problem limited to incoming links.

If the setting is already off
WhatsApp’s published guidance identifies the privacy control, but it does not provide a complete list of website, URL, app, device or network causes for every missing preview. Avoid treating an unverified workaround as a guaranteed fix. Narrow the case instead:
- Direction: Is the missing preview on a link you send or one you receive?
- Scope: Does it happen with one URL or with every URL?
- Platform: Is the message being sent from Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web or a desktop app?
- Version: Note the WhatsApp version shown in the app’s settings or store listing.
- Timing: Does the URL fail consistently, or did one message omit a preview?
These details help separate a sender privacy setting from a broader, unconfirmed condition. They are diagnostic questions, not a promise that a particular cause has been established by WhatsApp.
One URL fails, while others work
First verify that the URL is being sent by the account where previews are missing and that Disable link previews is off. If other URLs still generate cards, keep the exact failing URL, including its scheme and path, and record the platform and version. The available WhatsApp guidance does not confirm that metadata, redirects, URL shorteners or a site’s server response are the reason, so do not claim that changing any of those items will definitely solve the problem.
Every outgoing URL fails
Recheck the advanced privacy control rather than assuming it changed itself. If it is off and every URL still lacks a preview, document the same information for a support request: outgoing versus incoming, platform, app version and representative URLs. Do not enable or disable the sender-side control as a supposed incoming-preview fix. WhatsApp says the control affects links you send, while receiving previews does not affect the recipient’s IP address. Continue by recording the platform, version and examples; a complete official cause-and-remedy list is not provided in the cited guidance.
Privacy trade-off
WhatsApp presents Disable link previews as an optional security measure intended to protect the sender’s IP address. Enabling it means URLs you send will not generate link previews. Leaving it off allows WhatsApp to generate those previews. WhatsApp also says personal messages remain end-to-end encrypted and that receiving previews has no impact on the recipient’s IP address.
That trade-off explains why the setting exists, but it does not explain every missing card. If your issue is only with incoming links, the setting is not the relevant control; if your issue is with links you send, it is the first documented check.

- Classify the direction. Test whether the missing card is on a URL you sent or received.
- Open the privacy path. Go to Settings (or profile picture) > Privacy > Advanced.
- Read the exact label. Locate Disable link previews, not a similarly named privacy option.
- Apply the documented change. If enabled, turn it off and send the URL again.
- Capture the scope. Note whether one URL or all tested URLs are affected.
- Record the environment. Write down Android, iPhone, Web or desktop, plus the app version.
