If no authorized control is available and the context menu is blocked, you have two practical choices: inspect the page with built-in developer tools to locate the image asset, or capture what is displayed with your browser’s screenshot feature. Inspection may recover the image file; a screenshot records the page or region and is not necessarily the original image or its full resolution.
The method depends on how the website presents the picture—an ordinary image element, a CSS background, a viewer, or another implementation. No single extraction recipe works on every site, and technical access does not by itself grant permission to reuse the image.
Choose the result you actually need

Before saving anything, check for a button labeled Download, Export, Open original or a similar control. That is the clearest indication that the site intends to provide a copy.
Try the website’s own download control
Look in the viewer and page controls
Image galleries, document viewers and media players often place the download action in a toolbar, an overflow menu (usually three dots), or a link labeled with the file type. Open the image’s dedicated view if the page offers one; the larger view may expose an authorized download even when the thumbnail page does not.

Use the normal browser command when it is available
In Chrome, the documented procedure is to right-click the image and choose Save Image As (Google Chrome Help). A site that suppresses the context menu prevents this particular route, so do not assume the Chrome help page provides a universal workaround.
Save what is displayed with Firefox Screenshot
When you only need a visual copy, Firefox has a built-in capture tool. Mozilla’s support page (last updated June 15, 2026) documents both a visible-area capture and a full-page capture (Mozilla Support).
- Open the page and position the image or area you want to keep.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. On Windows or Linux, you can instead press Ctrl+Shift+S; on macOS, press Command+Shift+S.
- Choose the visible area or full page. For a region, drag over the part of the page containing the image.
- Select Download. Firefox saves the capture as an image in the browser’s default download folder.
This produces a screenshot image. It does not promise the original file, the source dimensions, embedded metadata or the same compression quality. A full-page capture can also include surrounding text and controls; crop it only when that is appropriate for your record.
Investigate the image with developer tools
Developer tools show the page’s runtime HTML and the CSS rules applied to it. MDN documents how to open the tools in Chrome, Firefox and Safari and how the inspector represents page elements (MDN Web Docs). Safari may require enabling its developer tools before the menu appears.

Open the inspector and identify the presentation
- Open the browser’s developer-tools menu or its documented keyboard shortcut.
- Activate the element inspector (the pointer-in-a-box icon in most browsers).
- Select the picture on the page. Look for an
<img>element, a link around it, or a container whose CSS includes abackground-image. - Examine the displayed attributes and styles for a source URL, a larger source such as
srcset, or a link to an original image. Open a candidate URL in a new tab only when the site makes that resource available to your browser. - If the page uses a viewer, inspect the viewer’s own image element rather than the thumbnail. If it uses a CSS background, the relevant URL appears in the computed or matched CSS rules.
These are investigative steps, not a guaranteed extraction procedure. Modern sites can assemble URLs at runtime, use temporary addresses, require authentication, or draw pixels into a canvas. The exact control names and layout differ by browser release, and the page owner may intentionally restrict access.
Prefer the largest source that the page exposes
An image may have several responsive sources. A thumbnail URL can be visibly correct but much smaller than the file used at a larger viewport. If the inspector shows multiple source candidates, compare their dimensions and choose the largest one the page legitimately exposes. Do not defeat an access control, guess private URLs or attempt to bypass a paywall.
When inspection does not produce a usable file
The picture is a CSS background
There may be no <img> tag. Inspect the element’s styles for background-image: url(...) and follow the resource only if it loads normally for you. If the background is generated or tiled, a screenshot may be the only practical way to preserve exactly what you see.
The page draws the image into a canvas
Canvas output can omit a directly downloadable image URL. Use the site’s export feature if one exists. Otherwise, capture the displayed result; the screenshot will represent the rendered pixels rather than the original source.

The image is inside a protected viewer
A viewer may load tiles, require a signed session URL or prevent direct navigation. Do not treat a successful technical workaround as permission to copy or redistribute the work. Ask the site owner for an authorized file when the download matters.

Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when you right-click
That is the site’s context-menu handler doing its job. Use an in-page download control, Firefox Screenshot, or inspect the element with developer tools. Do not install an extension merely to defeat a menu when a built-in option meets your goal.
The inspector shows a tiny thumbnail
Check for srcset, a linked detail view or a larger viewer source. Responsive pages commonly load a smaller resource for a small viewport. If no larger source is exposed, a screenshot cannot create detail that was never displayed.
The saved URL returns an error
The URL may be temporary, session-bound or protected by a referrer or authorization requirement. Return to the page and use its download control, or request the file from the owner. Avoid guessing tokens or trying to circumvent authentication.

Wait for the image and lazy-loaded content to appear, then capture again. For a full-page result, scroll or use the browser’s full-page option. A script-driven viewer may require its own export control.

The downloaded file will not open
Confirm that the response is actually an image rather than an HTML error page. Check the file extension and size, and retry through the site’s authorized control. With an API, inspect status and response headers before writing the body to disk.

Saving a copy and reusing it are separate questions. U.S. Copyright Office guidance says original photographs are generally protected once fixed, and the photographer is generally the initial copyright owner, subject to exceptions such as work made for hire (What Photographers Should Know about Copyright; Photography & Copyright). Permission is generally needed for protected uses of someone else’s photograph.
