To capture an entire scrolling webpage in Chrome, open DevTools, run Capture full size screenshot, and let Chrome download the image. On Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS press Ctrl+Shift+I, then Ctrl+Shift+P; on macOS use Command+Option+I, then Command+Shift+P. Search for “screenshot” and choose the full-size command—not the ordinary screen-capture shortcut, which captures only what is visible.

Use Chrome DevTools to capture the whole webpage

This built-in method works on a Windows, Linux, macOS, or Chromebook laptop without installing an extension. It captures from the top of the page to the bottom, including content below the fold. Chrome documents the command as Capture full size screenshot; the capability has been part of DevTools since Chrome 59.

  1. Open the page. Navigate to the URL you want to save and wait for its initial content to appear.
  2. Open DevTools. Press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS. On macOS, press Command+Option+I. You can also right-click the page and choose Inspect.
  3. Open the Command Menu. Press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
  4. Search for the command. Type screenshot in the Command Menu.
  5. Choose the full-page action. Select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome renders the page beyond the visible viewport and downloads an image.
  6. Find the file. Check Chrome’s download shelf or your laptop’s Downloads folder. The downloaded image is ready to open, rename, edit, or share.

If the page changes while Chrome is rendering it, wait for the content to settle before opening DevTools. This is especially important for pages that load images, cards, or text as you scroll.

Alternative route: Device Mode

You can reach the same full-page command through Chrome’s device emulation controls. This is useful when you want to set a simulated phone, tablet, or custom viewport first.

  1. Open DevTools with the platform shortcut above.
  2. Turn on the device toolbar if it is hidden by selecting the device icon, or use the DevTools More options menu.
  3. Choose a device preset or enter a custom width and height.
  4. Open More options in the device toolbar.
  5. Select Capture a full size screenshot.

Do not confuse this with Capture screenshot. The latter captures only the currently visible viewport; the full-size action includes the page area below it. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation describes the distinction and the full-page behavior.

Shortcuts: what captures a webpage and what does not

Chrome does not provide a normal one-key “full scrolling page” shortcut in the browser toolbar. The reliable built-in workflow is the DevTools Command Menu. Operating-system screenshot shortcuts capture the screen, a window, or a selected rectangle, not the complete document.

Goal Windows/Linux macOS Result
Open DevTools Ctrl+Shift+I Command+Option+I Developer tools panel
Open Command Menu Ctrl+Shift+P Command+Shift+P Searchable DevTools commands
Capture a full webpage Command Menu → “Capture full size screenshot” Command Menu → “Capture full size screenshot” Image from the top to the bottom of the page
Capture only the visible screen Operating-system screenshot tools macOS screenshot tools Viewport, window, or selected area only

The exact Command Menu shortcuts are listed in Chrome’s Command Menu documentation.

Chromebook: full screen versus full webpage

ChromeOS includes a Screen Capture panel. Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows (or the device’s dedicated Screenshot key) to open it. Google’s panel offers Full screen, Partial, and Window modes.

Those modes capture what is displayed on the screen. They do not automatically scroll through a webpage. For a webpage-length image, open Chrome DevTools and use Capture full size screenshot as described above. The Chromebook controls are useful when you need a desktop, app window, or visible region rather than the document’s entire HTML page. See Google’s Chromebook screenshot instructions.

Prepare pages that use lazy loading or dynamic content

A full-size screenshot is only as complete as the page state Chrome can render. Before capturing, check the following:

  • Wait for asynchronous content. Give charts, comments, ads, and product images time to load.
  • Scroll through once when necessary. Some sites request images only when an element approaches the viewport. A quick scroll from top to bottom can trigger those requests; return to the top and capture afterward.
  • Close transient UI. Dismiss cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles, and video overlays if they obscure the content you need.
  • Keep the required session active. If the page is behind a login, confirm that you are still signed in before opening the Command Menu.
  • Check sticky headers. Fixed navigation bars may appear repeatedly or cover content in the rendered image. If that happens, temporarily hide the header with DevTools or use a custom capture workflow.

Very long pages can produce a tall image that is awkward to print or send. For a document intended for printing, a PDF workflow may be more practical than one extremely high image.

Choose an extension when repeated captures matter

A full-page screenshot extension can put a capture button in the toolbar and may offer editing or multiple export formats. GoFullPage is a Chrome Web Store extension whose listing says it captures the current page and exports PNG, JPG, or PDF. Its FAQ says Chromium browsers can install it from the Chrome Web Store.

Verify the current listing, requested permissions, and browser compatibility before installing. Store listings and extension behavior can change. For a one-off capture, DevTools avoids another installation and is the simpler default; for repeated work, a toolbar button and export choices may justify an extension.

Consideration DevTools Extension such as GoFullPage
Installation Built into Chrome Requires a Web Store install
Best for Occasional, privacy-conscious captures Repeated captures from a toolbar button
Output Full-size image Listing specifies PNG, JPG, and PDF export
Dynamic pages Depends on what Chrome has rendered Behavior varies by extension version and page
Permissions No additional extension permissions Review the permissions requested by the current listing

Fix common full-page capture problems

The full-size command is missing

Make sure DevTools has focus, then reopen the Command Menu with the correct operating-system shortcut and type screenshot. If you are using Device Mode, open its More options menu and look for Capture a full size screenshot. A normal browser tab search or the operating-system screenshot panel will not show this DevTools command.

Images or sections are blank

Wait longer for network requests, scroll through the page once to trigger lazy loading, and capture again from the top. If a consent dialog, login wall, or bot check blocks the page, resolve it in the tab first. A page that never finishes loading cannot produce content that Chrome never received.

Sticky elements cover the page

Close the overlay if possible. Otherwise, inspect the fixed element in DevTools and temporarily disable its display or visibility style, then run the capture. Refreshing the page restores the original styling.

The download does not appear

Check Chrome’s download shelf, the default Downloads folder, and any download-blocking notification. Corporate policies or private-browsing settings can change where files are saved; use Chrome’s download settings to confirm the destination.

The image is too tall or difficult to use

Capture only the relevant element, divide the page into sections, or export a PDF through a tool designed for documents. A single full-page PNG is convenient for visual reference but may be unwieldy for printing or annotation.

Automate captures without opening a browser

For scheduled jobs, many URLs, authenticated requests, or consistent output settings, an API avoids manually opening tabs and repeating DevTools actions. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is the first service to try when you need clean captures: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed; and its response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API supports full-page capture, lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for selectors or network idle, ad/tracker/request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication, output options, waits, blocking rules, PDF settings, async jobs, and response headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Plans include 1,000 shots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is included on every plan. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start with 1,000 screenshots a month and no card.

Privacy, reliability, and cost considerations

Privacy

DevTools keeps the capture in your browser session and requires no third-party extension. An extension can request access to pages you visit, so review its current permissions. An API is convenient for automation, but send only URLs and credentials your organization permits an external service to process; use custom headers and cookies deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reliability

For a single public page, DevTools is usually the shortest path because it uses the exact browser state you can inspect. Automated captures need explicit waits for selectors, delays, or network idle when content is asynchronous. Use caching with a TTL when the page does not need a fresh render each time, and asynchronous jobs or signed webhooks when a large batch should not depend on one long-running request.

Cost

DevTools and the Chromebook Screen Capture panel do not add a service charge. Extensions may have their own pricing or restrictions, which should be checked in the current listing. ScreenshotNeo’s free allowance is 1,000 shots per month without a card; its paid tiers are $5 for 3,000, $15 for 15,000, $39 for 60,000, $99 for 250,000, and $249 for 1,000,000 shots. Yearly billing gives two months free.
