Yes. In Windows, pressing Print Screen (often labeled PrtScn) takes a picture of the whole screen and copies it to the clipboard. It usually does not create a file by itself: press Ctrl+V in Paint or another app that accepts images to paste the capture. To save a screenshot as a file, try Windows+PrtScn and check Pictures > Screenshots; the shortcut’s behavior can depend on the device.
What happens when you press Print Screen?
On Windows, the usual result of pressing PrtScn is a full-screen image copied to the clipboard. The clipboard is temporary storage used for copying and pasting, so the capture may seem to have disappeared if you expect a new image file to show up in a folder.
To see or save that capture, open an image-capable app such as Paint, press Ctrl+V, then use the app’s save command. You can also paste the image into a document, email, or another app that accepts images. Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut and screen-copy guidance describes this whole-screen-to-clipboard behavior.
There are different Print Screen combinations for different outcomes. The key may copy a whole screen, save a screenshot, or open a snipping interface depending on the shortcut, device, Windows settings, and keyboard. The documented guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but labels and behavior can vary by release and hardware.

Choose the shortcut for the result you want

The destination matters: a clipboard capture is not the same thing as a screenshot file. If you need a file to upload or attach, paste the capture into an image app and save it, or use the Windows+PrtScn shortcut and look in the Screenshots folder.
How to take and save a screenshot
Copy the whole screen with PrtScn
- Show the screen you want to capture.
- Press PrtScn. If your keyboard requires a function layer for that key, see the device guidance below.
- Open Paint or another app that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl+V. The screenshot should appear in the app.
- To keep it as a file, use the app’s save option and choose a location and format.
This method gives you a chance to review the pasted image and choose its filename and format. If nothing seems to happen immediately after pressing PrtScn, that can be normal: the image may have been copied without opening an app or displaying a file.
Save a full-screen capture with Windows+PrtScn
- Press Windows+PrtScn together.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Look for the new screenshot. If it is not there, use PrtScn and paste into Paint instead; Windows+PrtScn’s behavior depends on the device.
Microsoft documents Windows+PrtScn as a screenshot shortcut and points to Pictures > Screenshots. Because the behavior is hardware-dependent, do not assume every keyboard will save a file the same way.
Capture only part of the screen
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose an available capture mode and select the screen area you need.
- Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to review the capture, make edits if needed, and save it.
This is the built-in route when you do not want a whole-screen image. It lets you select a region rather than capturing the entire screen. The exact overlay and available controls can differ between Windows releases.

Capture the active window
Microsoft’s Office-oriented instructions document Alt+PrtScn for copying an image of the active window to the clipboard. Click the window you want first, press the shortcut, then paste with Ctrl+V into an image app or other destination. If your device maps the key differently, use Windows+Shift+S and select the area around that window instead.
Why does Print Screen open Snipping Tool?
Windows can assign the Print Screen key to open screen snipping. If pressing PrtScn opens an overlay instead of copying the whole screen, check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard for Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turning that setting off restores the whole-screen clipboard behavior described in Microsoft’s shortcut guidance.
After changing the setting, press PrtScn again and paste into Paint with Ctrl+V to check the result. If the key still opens a different interface, device software or keyboard configuration may also affect what the key does.
What if your keyboard has no PrtScn key?
Some compact or laptop keyboards do not show a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as an alternative, though the right combination may depend on the device. Check the keyboard’s markings or the manufacturer’s instructions if that shortcut does not work. You can also use Windows+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool overlay without relying on a Print Screen key.

Where did my screenshot go?
- You pressed PrtScn: Look in the clipboard by opening Paint and pressing Ctrl+V. The default behavior copies the image; it may not save a file automatically.
- You pressed Windows+PrtScn: Check Pictures > Screenshots. Microsoft documents that location, while noting the shortcut depends on hardware.
- You used Windows+Shift+S: Look for the Snipping Tool notification/editor and use its workflow to edit or save the capture.
- You used Alt+PrtScn: Paste with Ctrl+V; the documented Office-oriented workflow copies the active window to the clipboard.
If you need the screenshot in a particular folder, the most predictable approach is to paste it into an image app and save it there. That also gives you a chance to confirm that you captured the right screen or window.

Troubleshooting Print Screen
PrtScn appears to do nothing
It may have copied the image to the clipboard without showing a file or notification. Open Paint and press Ctrl+V. If the image appears, the capture worked; save it from the app if you need a file. If it does not, try Windows+Shift+S to check whether screen capture is available through the Snipping Tool.
Windows+PrtScn does not create a file
Check Pictures > Screenshots first. Microsoft qualifies this shortcut as dependent on hardware, so it may not behave identically on every system. Use PrtScn followed by Ctrl+V in Paint as an alternative, or capture with Windows+Shift+S and save through the Snipping Tool workflow.
PrtScn opens an overlay instead of copying the whole screen
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and check Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. If it is enabled and you want PrtScn to copy the full screen, turn it off and test again by pasting into Paint.
The shortcut does not work on a compact keyboard
Look for a secondary Print Screen marking or function-layer behavior, and try Fn+Windows+Space, which Microsoft documents as an alternative on devices without a PrtScn key. Keyboard hardware varies, so consult the device’s instructions if the combination is not recognized. Windows+Shift+S is another built-in option.

The pasted image is not the screen or window you expected
Use the shortcut that matches the target: PrtScn for the whole-screen clipboard capture, Alt+PrtScn for the active window in the documented Office-oriented workflow, or Windows+Shift+S to select a region. Before capturing an active window, click it so it is the current window. For a region, make the selection in the overlay and review it in Snipping Tool before saving.
